What comes to mind when you think of a philanthropist? The term often conjures images of great wealth, and many of us don’t think we could ever be considered a philanthropist. But the Giving Circle 100 Women Who Care Charlotte (100WWCC) makes philanthropy attainable through collective giving.

It's simple: Members meet over dinner four times a year to learn about three Charlotte-based 501(c)(3) non-profits and vote anonymously on which local non-profit the group will support. Each member makes a $100 donation directly to the local non-profit for a collective impactful gift. Past recipients of the 100WWCC’s collective donation include Baby Bundles, Freedom Communities, and The Relatives.

From distant beginnings to cherished local connections, Cati and Rob have woven their lives together in the historic district of Dilworth, finding a place that perfectly suits their vibrant personalities and varied interests. Cati's roots trace back to Galati, Romania, a city on the Danube River. She was born during Romania’s communist dictatorship and witnessed the revolution as a young child, growing up in a post-dictatorship country during the 1990s. At age 13, she began a new chapter in the United States, settling in the Charlotte suburbs with her family.

Meet the precious pet of the month, Taco, an 8-year-old male tuxedo cat who lives in Dilworth with his owners Ashley and Rob Wilson. Taco was gifted to Ashley for her 28th birthday by her best friend Allie when they were roommates in Columbia, SC. As Ashley explains, “Allie adopted him from the Humane Society in Columbia. Rob and I were dating at the time but not living together so Taco didn’t become his pet until three years later.” His name was chosen partly because “Taco Cat” is a palindrome, and the Wilsons also love to eat tacos!

The COVID-19 pandemic brought greater awareness to adolescent mental health needs. For the D’Allaird family, it affirmed their tragic experience. After losing their son Tyler, his parents Whitney and Kevin D’Allaird vowed to help other families avoid their loss. In 2021, after years of research, they launched FOR Students in Charlotte. They started with a two-day mental health event for high school seniors at one high school. Today, the organization reaches hundreds of high school students across the region. They equip teens to become healthy and resilient adults.

FOR Students partners with high schools and students to create peer-led small groups. Monthly, high-energy events introduce them to mental health experts who share tips and coping tools. FOR Students also hosts NEXT, a city-wide event aimed at graduating seniors managing the transition to life after high school.
