Today’s Department of Public Health weekly COVID-19 statistics indicate Melrose is still yellow and our statistics show a very small increase. Our positivity rate went from 2.17% to 2.25%. Our average number of positive cases per 100,000 went from 21.7 to 23.2.
On the vaccine front, the state announced that 50,000 doses became available today. Unfortunately, state website was again unable to handle the traffic generated by residents seeking appointments. Folks should know that the legislature has begun oversight hearing to examine the process and seek ways to improve it going forward.
Finally, a word about testing for parents and guardians of students in the Melrose Public Schools. This week, this district began offering free pooled testing to all students and staff. The more people that participate in the process, the more we will learn about Covid. The district is committed to returning as many students as possible to in-person learning, and this data will help us accomplish that goal. For more information about the testing, including how to sign up, use the link on the screen to access Superintendent Kukenberger’s newsletter.

And remember that free PCR testing is still available at Stop the Spread sites across Massachusetts including Saugus, and the wait times have dropped dramatically. Even if you do not have symptoms, it is a good idea to get tested.
As always, I appreciate all your efforts to keep the virus at bay, and I know we are all excited that Spring is on the way. Keep wearing those masks, practicing good hygiene, maintaining social distance, and staying home if you have symptoms. And please always cooperate with contact tracers if and when they contact you. Together, we will get through this.
