When the Muses Fall Silent: Irish Cinema and the State of the Artist

The video and music installation 'Silence Isn't Very Much' by artist and musician Guy Goldstein is now featured alongside an insightful article by Benjamin Freidenberg in the 'Food for Thought' section of Culture Treasures magazine.

๐Ÿ”— See the link in the first comment of this post.

From the article:

The video art installation โ€˜Silence isn't Very Muchโ€™ addresses the conflict in Northern Ireland by exploring the role and historical function of the artist as a preserver and recreator of events and mythologies. In the video art, Goldstein transforms the small, low-ceilinged space in the two-hundred-year-old detention tower where he resides into a laboratory of historical sounds.

โ€˜Silence isnโ€™t Very Muchโ€™ was first exhibited at Goldsteinโ€™s solo exhibition โ€œOnce, a Beat, Second Hitโ€ at the Petach Tikva Museum of Art in 2018, curated by Drorit Gur Arie.

In 2012, Israeli artist Nir Peled known as created a mural titled โ€œJudahโ€ in Krakow, Poland, which he considers one of his most significant works. Painted in the Kazimierz district, a historically Jewish area, this mural features a lion cub as a powerful symbol of the Jewish people. Pilpeled painted it during the Jewish Festival, transforming an abandoned house that once belonged to a Jewish family before World War II. The mural brought new life to the area, leading to the location being named after the artwork, โ€œJudah Skwer,โ€ and the space evolving into a food court.
The lion has long been a powerful symbol in Jewish culture and tradition, representing strength, courage, and majesty. This symbolism traces back to the biblical tribe of Judah, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, which is often associated with the lion. In Genesis 49:9, Jacob blesses his son Judah by comparing him to a lionโ€™s whelp, highlighting his future leadership and strength: โ€œJudah is a lionโ€™s whelp; from the prey, my son, you have gone up.โ€ As a result, the lion cub of Judah is depicted as a walking lion, symbolizing the House of King David as a descendant of the Tribe of Judah, and appears in the emblems of cities in Israel, such as the emblem of the city of Jerusalem.

The lionโ€™s imagery also appears in various Jewish art, literature, and liturgy, embodying the resilience and enduring spirit of the Jewish people. In the context of Pilpeledโ€™s mural โ€œJudah,โ€ the depiction of a lion cub in Krakowโ€™s Kazimierz district serves as a poignant reminder of the Jewish communityโ€™s history and legacy in the area. It symbolizes the revival and strength of Jewish culture in a place deeply scarred by the events of World War II.

In the dynamic world of photography and digital art, Yaeli Gabriely stands out as a unique and innovative voice. Gabriely uses her body as both an object and a medium, crafting a series of captivating and emotionally charged digital artworks that shed light on the vulnerability concealed behind the masks we all wear.

Gabrielyโ€™s work process is intriguing and versatile. The act of photography serves as the initial stage in her artistic exploration. This foundational step is then enriched by the addition of digital layers to each piece, meticulously designed to seize the viewerโ€™s attention and steer it towards the more profound illusion: the way we present our lives to the world.

Maya Bloch is an artist known for her evocative and dream-like paintings that blur the lines between reality and abstraction. Using graphite, gesso, and colored pencils, Bloch creates monochromatic works that transform figures from strangerโ€™s old family photographs into ethereal forms. Her process often involves controlled chaos, where erasures and the natural flow of the medium play a significant role in shaping the final piece. Blochโ€™s art captures the fleeting and ambiguous nature of memory and presence.

Michal Chelbin is a distinguished photographer whose art exquisitely illuminates universal themes such as family relationships, identity, gender, the struggles of adolescence, and the quest for fame. Her compelling portraits represent a harmonious blend of documentary and staged photography. Utilizing film and natural light, she captures the very spirit of her subjects. The "Antigoneโ€ play by Jean Anouilh is set in Nazi-occupied France and follows Antigone's defiance of Creon's authoritarian rule by insisting on burying her brother Polynices. Her unwavering resistance leads to her death and the subsequent suicides of Haemon and Eurydice, underscoring the tragic consequences of personal integrity clashing with oppressive power.

THE LAST DANCE OF ARIK AND RUTH: ART, AI, AND THE NOVA FESTIVAL MASSACRE

The short animation film โ€œThe Last Dance of Arik and Ruthโ€ by director Doron Solomons is available to watch in Culture Treasures magazine, next to an article by Shachaf Dekel. ๐Ÿ”— link in the first comment

Ruth Perez was born with cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, confining her to a wheelchair. Her love for trance music, discovered at the age of five, inspired her father, Arik, to take her to Psytrance festivals both in Israel and around the world. Over the years, Arik and Ruth became an integral part of the Psytrance community, a group that welcomed them with love and compassion.

On October 7, 2023, Arik and Ruth arrived at the Nova Festival in Israel, near the Gaza Strip border, to celebrate life and music. Instead, they found themselves in the midst of the deadliest and most brutal terrorist attack in the countryโ€™s history. Approximately 4,400 people had gathered at the festival to dance in the desert over the weekend. In the early hours of Saturday, Hamas terrorists launched an attack, butchering 364 people and kidnapping 44 others to Gaza. Arik tried to escape with Ruth in his arms, but the terrorists brutally slaughtered them.

The touching story of Arik and Ruth was chosen by film director Doron Solomons to be told through a short animation film that combines artificial intelligence technology and filmed interviews.

On October 7, 2023, during the Nova music festival massacre, Shani Louk, a 22-year-old German-Israeli tattoo artist, was brutally murdered by Hamas terrorists. Shortly after Hamas waged war on Israel, a video emerged online showing Loukโ€™s body with a significant head injury and blood-matted hair. Her battered naked body was paraded through the streets of Gaza City by Hamas terrorists in the back of a pickup truck, while Gazans surrounding the vehicle cheered and spat on her. The video went viral, becoming one of the first widely circulated pieces of video evidence of the Hamas massacre on October 7th. It was released amid a wave of videos depicting Hamas members parading Israeli hostages of all ages and dead bodies in Gaza.

Loukโ€™s body was discovered by the IDF in the terror tunnels of Gaza on 17 May 2024, together with the bodies of two other victims of the Nova music festival massacre.

The uncovering of the Israeli hostagesโ€™ bodies is a stark reminder to the world of the horrific atrocities Hamas has inflicted on Israeli citizens in their attempt to conquer Israel on October 7th. For the past 7 months, the world has lost sight of the reason for the war. Hamas, the sole ruler of the Gaza Strip, has publicly declared its genocidal intentions for the Jewish people. The slogan โ€œfrom the river to the sea, Palestine will be freeโ€ symbolizes their aim to destroy and conquer Israel located between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. The murder, r**e, and torture of defenseless Israeli families including children and babies in their homes and youth at the Nova festival represent the culmination of decades of incitement against Jews.

There are still 128 hostages kept in Hamas terror tunnels under Gaza. We call for the immediate unconditional release of all the hostages.

He infuses classical elements into his figurative paintings, establishing a visual language that eloquently articulates complex themes on the canvas. Drawing inspiration from biblical narratives, he reimagines these tales with contemporary figures, spotlighting the timeless relevance of fundamental ethical dilemmas.

Matan Ben Canaan is the only Israeli artist to receive the esteemed BP Portrait Award in 2015.

These days, Jews and Israelis wear a yellow ribbon as a symbol of solidarity with the 132 Israeli hostages waiting to be released from Gaza. Among them are Kfir Bibas, a one-year-old baby, and Shlomo Monsour, an 85-year-old Holocaust survivor. They were kidnapped from their homes on October 7th, the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.

Today is Yom Hashoa, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Itโ€™s a day of reflection, and it is difficult to go through this day without understanding that Never Again Is Now.

The hatred for the Jewish people has once again taken on new forms, disguising itself under โ€œAnti-Zionism,โ€ as people across the world call for the destruction of the Jewish State โ€œfrom the river to the sea.โ€ Israelis and Jews around the world hear the chants in English and Arabic, labeling Israel as a terror state and delegitimizing the historical connection of the Jewish people to Israel. Blood libels and conspiracies targeting Jews are spreading across social media, creating fertile ground for old antisemitism to raise its head again.

The images of the brutal massacre of October 7th deeply resonate with the collective Jewish trauma of centuries of pogroms and, of course, the Holocaust. Pogroms against Jews have a long and tragic history, dating back centuries. The term โ€œpogromโ€ originally referred to organized, often state-sanctioned, violent attacks on Jewish communities in Eastern Europe, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These attacks were characterized by looting, destruction of property, murder and r**e.

We demand the unconditional release of all the hostages now.

โ€˜The Legacy of Grandma Binyaโ€™ by Ohad Hadad

One of the distinctive customs preserved within Yemenite Jewish tradition is the henna ceremony, a ritual marked by deep familial significance. In the art of Israeli artist Ohad Hadad, this tradition finds a contemporary reinterpretation. Hadadโ€™s grandmother, Binya Avhar, an embroidery artist, played an important role in these ceremonies. Adorning brides with her meticulously crafted garments, she oversaw the application of henna onto the hands of the betrothed couple.

As a child, Hadad harbored dreams of wearing the bridal clothes his grandmother meticulously crafted, despite them not being intended for his gender. This experience fueled his desire to reinterpret traditional gender roles within the context of marriage and celebration. The embroidery encircling the photographs in Hadadโ€™s work serves as a testament to his grandmotherโ€™s artistry.

The word โ€˜watermelonโ€™ written in a hybrid writing system that combines Hebrew and Arabic.

Typeface designer and researcher, Liron Lavi Turknich, uses her expertise in Semitic languages to foster unity in Israelโ€™s multicultural society. Her groundbreaking project, Aravrit, is a hybrid writing system, born out of her fascination with the findings of 19th-century French ophthalmologist, Louis ร‰mile Javal. Javalโ€™s work suggested that people can recognize Latin words by viewing only their upper halves. Lironโ€™s curiosity led her to explore this theory further within the context of Hebrew and Arabic, revealing that Hebrew words could be recognized from their lower half and Arabic from their upper.

Touch Screen: Romantic Comedy Genre Contested by Globalization and Social Media

Watch the short film โ€˜Touchโ€™ by Nir Berger and read the insightful article by Benjamin Freidenberg in the โ€œFood For Thoughtโ€ section in Culture Treasures Magazine - link in first comment ๐Ÿ”—

The short film โ€˜Touchโ€™, directed by Nir Berger, explores romantic exploration among teenagers in the digital era. It challenges conventional notions of romance by presenting its two main characters, Adel and Uri, as individuals who connect through a shared activity: trolling their friends online. Both post snarky and hurtful comments, impersonate other users, spam, and mock others.

The rise in antisemitism globally since the October 7th has been significant and widespread. The United States has seen a 337% increase in antisemitic incidents during the two months following the attack, marking the highest number of such incidents recorded since the Anti-Defamation League began tracking in 1979. Globally, antisemitic incidents soared by 1,180%, with about one-third of these incidents occurring in the US, especially in areas with significant Jewish populations. Europe has not been spared, with a 235% increase in antisemitic incidents, with 39% of these incidents occurring there.

The violence has been both broad and severe, including physical assaults, desecration of Jewish sites, and a massive increase in antisemitic content online. In particular, college campuses across the US, Europe, Australia, and South Africa have seen a notable increase in antisemitic activities, significantly affecting Jewish studentsโ€™ sense of security and well-being .

We urge you to take a stand against antisemitism. Many incidents go unreported, and Jewish children, even in elementary schools, face bullying. Engage with your Jewish friends; ask about their experiences and how their communities are affected. Support them by raising awareness and urging school principals to take action against such hate crimes. Ensure that your city council and police are proactive in preventing antisemitism. Donโ€™t leave your Jewish friends to face these challenges alone. Work to make schools, workplaces, and public spaces safe for Jews, where they do not feel compelled to conceal their identity.

END OF THE WORLD PARTY: A DIVE INTO EXPERIMENTAL ANIMATION

Watch the short experimental animation โ€œAnimal Locomotionโ€ by Noga Sirota and Asa Rikin, and read the fascinating article by Noa Berman-Herzberg in Culture Treasures Magazine
https://culturetreasures.com/animal-locomotion/

Animal Locomotion is the title of a defining photo series by the photographer-scientist Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904), who was the first to create successfully the illusion of figures in motion and, thus considered a pioneer of animation and cinema at large. It is also the title of an experimental mixed-media short film (8 min) by Noga Sirota and Asa Rikin, dazzling in its exploration of the movement and evolution of characters, objects, structures, and symbols on a timeline, examining, among other things, the evolutionary link between the animalistic and the human.

Thank you to everyone who attended my lecture and screening at the Ramat Gan Museum of Art last night. The lecture delved into the impact of art in conflict zones, sparking an inspiring discussion about the boundless opportunities art and design offer. By collaborating with individuals from both sides of the conflict, and leveraging culture and language, we explored how art can open minds and foster empathy.

Whispers of the Abyss by artist Amir Tomashov
Graphite on chipboard

Tomashov injects his critical architectural and environmental background into his works in various media (sketch, draft, collage, relief, model, installation, painting, and mixed media) and offers a symbolic and instant comparison between the process of building and destruction. He creates mesmerizing images portraying the โ€˜esthetics of destructionโ€™, evoking thought and criticism of existence, esthetics, and annihilation. Tomashovโ€™s working thesis is the contrast between sight and experience, the Pandora Effect, which is heightened in post-disaster or conflict zones.
