Heat Safety and Awareness
Seniors Need to be Prepared for a Hot, Oppressive Summer

By Conviva Care Center

We all wait for summer to enjoy the holidays and share with our friends and loved ones, however, this year the high temperatures and extreme heat that has been occurring throughout the country has directly affected South Florida. In fact, it is already recorded that 2024 will be one of the hottest years in this state, according to organizations specialized in the subject such as the National Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Farmer's Calendar and AccuWeather.

That’s not good news for anyone, especially for seniors. As family practitioners specializing in elder care, we believe it truly takes understanding seniors’ unique health needs to keep them safe and healthy in hot climates. Conviva’s care teams are dedicated to doing everything possible to maintain and improve seniors’ quality of life.

Older adults should take extra care and follow the tips outlined below on how to stay safe during what promises to be a torrid summer.

Hydration, Rest Are Critical
Throughout the year—especially during the hot summer months—it is crucial to stay hydrated. Potential signs of dehydration include thirst; tiredness; dizziness; lightheadedness; urine that is dark and/or yellow; a dry mouth, eyes or lips; and infrequent urination. Overexposure to heat can also cause weakness, confusion, a racing heart and a loss of balance.

Every cell, tissue, and organ in the body needs water to work properly. Drinking eight glasses of water daily is a reasonable goal, but there are other options such as drinking milk, juices and herbal teas. Try to limit the intake of regular soda, energy, sports drinks, or other sweet drinks as they contain added sugar. Avoid drinking caffeine or alcohol.

When outdoors in hot weather use common sense. Wear light, loose clothes, take periodic breaks when walking or exercising, use liberal amounts of sunscreen, and try to avoid overexertion. Going to the library, playing board games, and other indoor activities are beneficial. At Conviva we offer multiple activities, games, and dance lessons for seniors to enjoy in air-conditioned comfort.

When it’s hot, listen to your body and react accordingly. Avoid going outside during the hottest part of the day (between 10 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.). If the temperature is 95 or above, it’s wise to remain indoors. Avoid being outside for more than 20 minutes, and if you need to be outside longer, incorporate a restful 40-minute cool-down period—and be sure to drink lots of water.

Older Population at Risk
Heat-related illnesses are 100% preventable, but the older population is more at risk. The odds of heat-related illnesses or injuries are compounded for people who are obese, have cardiovascular disease, a respiratory illness or diabetes. These conditions decrease the body’s ability to adapt to changes in the environment, and the prevalence of heat stress symptoms increase in proportion to the elevation of the body’s core temperature.

Seniors taking medications are also more prone to heat-related illness. Water pills, diuretics, or other medications for high blood pressure should be taken hours before any sun exposure. Drink fluids throughout the day, whether it’s water or drinks like Propel and Gatorade to replenish electrolytes in your system. Common symptoms include cramps, exhaustion, and heatstroke. With age, the body’s core temperature changes and heat stress causes changes in sweating, blood flow, and cardiovascular function.

With careful planning, seniors can enjoy the summer months while staying as safe and healthy as possible. Consult your doctor with specific questions about your health, medications and staying safe in the heat.

Meet The Obrand Family

Mike and his wife, Carly Dorfman, are proud parents of two active children, Ava, 7, and Rory, 5. Ava is an avid dancer, taking tap, acro, and ballet. She also loves cheerleading and music theater. Rory loves sports and is involved in Parkland Tee-Ball, Soccer, and skates at the Panthers Ice Den.

Parkland residents for eight years now, both Mike and Carly agree that they love the small-town feel and community they have become part of in Parkland. “We enjoy running into friends everywhere we go,” Mike says. Carly adds, “We love contributing to the community professionally and personally, and know this will be our home for years to come.”

Mike is a Senior Account Executive at Lightspeed Commerce, and Carly is a Speech Language Pathologist and the owner of KIDnection, a play space for kids, hosting caregiver and me classes, birthday parties, and special events based in Parkland.

When asked about her kids and their activities, Carly laughs and says, “Both children love to be creative and get messy. They take weekly art enrichment classes at KIDnection.”

An involved dad on the field and at the rink, Mike coaches Soccer and Tee-Ball. He is an avid hockey fan and plays hockey weekly at the Panthers Ice Den in Coral Springs.

Carly is very active with pilates, and is also involved in the PTO at Heron Heights and Congregation Kol Tikvah. Passionate about her business, KIDnection regularly has booths at a variety of community events throughout Parkland. Both Mike and Carly volunteer at Heron Heights Elementary, helping out in the classroom.

When asked about their lives outside of work and school, Carly tells us, “We love spending time together as a family as much as we can. Whether it’s trips to the beach, exploring local restaurants, or browsing the Parkland Farmer’s Market, we love going on adventures together, big or small.”

Ava attends Heron Heights Elementary and is in the Multiyear program. She is starting second grade and loves reading and art.

Rory recently graduated Pre-K from Phylis J Green ECC at Congregation Kol Tikvah. He will be starting Kindergarten at Heron Heights in the Multiyear program. He loves to create in his STEM workshops.

As we finalize our interview, both Mom and Dad add their sentiments about their beautiful hometown. “I feel so grateful to live in a city that supports me personally and professionally. We have found our forever home and our forever friends here. It truly is the best place to live in South Florida,” Carly says with passion.

Mike continues with his unique perspective, “I moved to South Florida from Montreal, Canada ten years ago. The Montreal community is tight-knit and family-oriented, and our family has found the same feeling in Parkland. I could not ask for a better place to establish new roots, raise a family and grow with the community.”

The Obrands attend services at Congregation Kol Tikvah.

Healthy Habits for the New School Year

By Michelle Snyder, DO, Sawgrass Pediatrics

It is hard to believe it's back-to-school season already! Establishing healthy habits will help ensure a smooth transition, continued academic success, and overall well-being. Here are some key habits to consider as you gear up for back to school:

1. Establish a Consistent Sleep Routine
One of the most important habits for students of all ages is maintaining a consistent sleep schedule. During the summer, bedtimes often become more relaxed, but as school approaches, it’s essential to gradually adjust to a routine by going to bed 15 minutes earlier each night until the desired bedtime is achieved. It is recommended for school age children to get 8-10 hours of sleep per night to support learning, memory consolidation, and overall health.

2. Plan Balanced Meals and stay hydrated
Proper nutrition is fundamental to brain function and physical activity. Start the day with a balanced breakfast that includes protein, whole grains, and fruits or vegetables. Packing nutritious snacks can help students avoid the temptation of vending machines or unhealthy cafeteria options. A varied diet will ensure they receive essential vitamins and minerals necessary for growth and cognitive function. Dehydration can impair concentration and cognitive function. Encourage students to avoid sugary drinks like soda and excessive fruit juices, as they can contribute to energy crashes and dental issues.

3. Prioritize Physical Activity
Regular exercise not only promotes physical health but also enhances mood and cognitive function. Encourage students to stay physically active with a goal of 60 minutes of activity most days of the week. This can include activities like walking or biking to school, participating in sports, or playing outside after school. Achieving success through activity can also boost a child’s confidence which can further benefit their school performance.

4. Manage Screen Time
With the prevalence of digital devices, it’s important to establish healthy screen time limits. Excessive screen time, especially close to bedtime, can interfere with sleep quality. Encourage breaks from screens during study sessions and allocate time for other activities such as reading, hobbies, or socializing with friends and family. Furthermore, the quick feedback of digital devices inhibits the ability to learn patience and promotes impulsivity.

5. Don’t forget to have fun!
Finally, remind students to find balance in their lives. While academics are important, encourage them to pursue hobbies, spend time with loved ones, and engage in activities that bring joy and fulfillment. A well-rounded approach to life contributes to overall happiness and success.

By establishing and maintaining these healthy habits, students can set themselves up for a successful and fulfilling school year. Don’t forget to schedule your students’ well checks, school physicals, and vaccinations so they are all set and up to date! Here’s to a healthy and productive school year!

Students with existing passions will have their eyes opened by incredible world-leading teaching methods. Participating in the performing arts is crucial to your child's development because creativity is a key that can unlock imagination and transform your child's approach to education across every subject.

Freshman Jack Rodman, an academic scholar and arts academy student, shares, “The Juilliard School experience has developed me as an actor. The lessons continue to teach me to search for deeper meaning in theatrical pieces. By participating in the NAE Festival of the Arts, I solidified my knowledge in the classroom and applied it on stage, bringing everything to life.”

The mission of North Broward Preparatory School is to inspire global citizens to create their future and live with purpose. Our aspirations align with our partnership with UNICEF, allowing our students to make a big impact in their local and international communities by addressing the seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and practically applying them to implement real change.

Two student leaders, Junior Anna Toledano and Senior Inayaa Kazi, attended the UNICEF- Student Summit with over 120 Nord Anglia students worldwide in Houston, Texas. This summit experience enriched their understanding of global issues and empowered them to advocate for positive change within their communities.

Our teachers enjoy the benefits of being trained by world-leading educators from The Juilliard School and MIT, actively learning and advancing their careers. Whether it be professional development days on their campuses or professors coming to North Broward Prep for a learning day with our faculty, the growth is continuous.

A new partnership is on the horizon with IMG Sports Academy, the global leader in sports education. This collaboration will enhance our students' experience by fostering wellbeing, resilience, confidence, teamwork, and leadership, preparing them to excel both on and off the field.

A world of possibilities opens for your child with access to the Nord Anglia Education collaborations. Interested in learning more and scheduling a tour to discover for yourself? Go to www.nbps.org/visit or call 954-247-0179.

Coral Springs American Little League: Celebrating Success and Looking Ahead

By Ashley Ferraro

For over five decades, Coral Springs American Little League (CSALL) has been a cornerstone of the Coral Springs community, nurturing young athletes and fostering a deep love for baseball. Founded in 1971, CSALL holds the distinction of being the city's oldest recognized league, boasting a rich history of commitment to youth development, sportsmanship, and community.

The league’s mission is to instill values such as leadership, character, courage, loyalty, and teamwork in every player. These principles not only help young athletes excel on the field, but also equip them with important life skills that extend far beyond the diamond.

CSALL President Tony Juliano, who has been involved with the organization for over a decade, emphasizes the sense of community and family that the league fosters. "Seeing the kids return year after year and watching them grow both as players and individuals is incredibly rewarding," he shares.

The regular spring season has wrapped up and moved into the tournament phase. The 50/70 All-Star district tournament took place in mid-June and ran for a week, culminating in a thrilling championship game, where CSALL emerged victorious. In addition, the 8U team has impressively claimed victory in district selects for the second year in a row. All around, these achievements are a testament to the dedication and hard work of the volunteers and
players.

The district winners will move on to the sectional level, followed by the state level, and then regionals. Ultimately, those winners will compete in the Little League World Series. Despite all the imminent excitement, CSALL is already gearing up for the 2024 Fall Ball season, with registration opening this month. For many players and families, baseball is a year-round commitment, providing continuous opportunities for skill development and enjoyment of the game.

The league welcomes children ages 4-16 from the area south of Wiles Road in Coral Springs. For those living outside this area, eligibility can still be met by attending a local public school or obtaining a City of Coral Springs Sports Card.

One of the most exciting developments in recent years has been the introduction of the Intermediate League for middle schoolers. This league, which started a few seasons ago, has seen massive success and continues to grow in popularity each season. Tony commented on this new addition, saying, “Our Intermediate League has been a fantastic way to keep older kids engaged and challenged. It’s wonderful to see it thriving and becoming a favorite among our middle school players.”

As CSALL looks forward to more baseball, the focus remains on providing a positive, enriching experience for all participants. Parents and community members are encouraged to get involved, either by volunteering as coaches or taking on other essential roles within the organization. High school students can also volunteer and gain service hours.

Join the Coral Springs American Little League family and be a part of a longstanding tradition of excellence in youth baseball. For more details on how to get involved, visit www.csall.com.

Cirque du Soleil is coming back to South Florida
with one of its best-loved productions
CORTEO
In Sunrise from July 11th to 21st, 2024 at the Amerant Bank Arena

Corteo, the most enchanting arena production from Cirque du Soleil is heading to Sunrise, set to charm audiences. This unique production, directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, first premiered in Montreal in April 2005. Since its creation, the show has amazed over 10 million spectators, in 20 countries, on 4 continents. Corteo will be presented at the Amerant Bank Arena for 12 shows only from July 11th to 21st, 2024.

Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.

The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

In a Cirque du Soleil first, the stage is central in the arena and divides the venue, with each half of the audience facing the other half, giving a unique perspective not only of the show, but also a performer’s eye view of the audience. An atmosphere like never seen before in Cirque du Soleil arena shows. The set curtains, inspired by the Eiffel Tower, and the central curtains, which were hand painted, give a grandiose feel to the stage. This sets the tone for the poetry of Corteo.

Meet The Cohens

Settling in Parkland three years ago, Steve and Sarah Cohen are thrilled to be part of our community, and we are definitely lucky to have them! Their family includes sons Nathan, seven, and Max, five. Their home also includes two cats, a fish, and sea monkeys.

Steve works for Northern Trust and manages a team of Sales Support Professionals up and down the East Coast. Sarah is on the PTA, PTO, serves as room mom, and is a travel advisor with a focus on Disney family vacations.

Their adorable and energetic boys are both involved in Parkland Little League. They love fishing in their backyard, have done Learn to Skate at the Panthers Ice Den, and plan to play soccer in the Fall. Max also wants to take a hip hop dance class and will likely do that at the PRec. They also love the beach and will be in surf camp this summer. Sarah tells us with a chuckle, “They love finding lizards and digging in the dirt looking for bugs and wrecking their mom’s garden and backyard.”

Steve coached in both kids’ i9 teams for baseball and tee ball. Steve is an avid fisherman, and Sarah was the president of the PTO at PJGECC at Kol Tikvah and a member of the PTA at Riverglades. Now that Max has graduated from pre-K, Mom will focus more energy on RivergladesPTA.

Definitely not wallflowers, the busy Cohens love going to the beach, watching tv, swimming, rollerblading, road trips, Disney trips, fishing, and dance parties in the living room.

Max will be in Kindergarten at Riverglades this Fall. He loves bugs and science. Nathan will be in second grade at Riverglades and loves math, reading and PE.

“We love the small town feel of Parkland,“ Steve tells us. “I grew up in a small town in New Jersey, and Sarah grew up in a small beach town in New York.“

Sarah adds, “We both feel so at home in Parkland. The town is beautiful, we have made the most wonderful friends who are now like family, and we never want to leave. We are home.”

As we conclude our time with this beautiful, close-knit family, Mom and Dad share their personal mottos. Ever positive, Sarah says, “Choose happiness every day.” Steve tells us, “Success is my only option, failure’s not.”

Summit Academy Charter School – Join the Family!

Summer is in full swing, which means that the new school year is soon to begin. Enroll your child at Summit Academy Charter School - a tuition free K-8 public charter school in Coral Springs! The mission at Summit Academy is to create an inclusive and diverse environment that's reflective of the local population.

The new school year welcomes a new principal, Ms. Mari Canetti, whose teaching career began in, of all places, high school, where they had a work experience program that lit her fire for teaching. From being lead teacher in several different grade levels at schools in Dade County, then Davie, she went on to get her masters degree, became Dean of Students, and then Assistant Principal. She is now excited to transition to Principal at Summit Academy Charter School! She tells us, “Many parents choose Summit Academy because their child is not just a number, but treated in a more private school way; as individuals. We strive to cater to each child’s, not only academic, but their social needs as well. We get to know each child and their families, and we pride ourselves on our school being a close, family-like environment.”

Summit Academy parent Roxanne Rossi has nothing but great things to say about the school. Her daughter, Rosalia Di Pietro, attended sixth through eighth grade in the advanced group, and is now better prepared for high school. Roxanne says, “First off, I love this school! It was a great fit for my daughter. I researched many schools, but what made Summit Academy stand out to us was the simple fact that they claimed not to put a ton of pressure on the children regarding state testing, which usually results in better results for the children. I felt her education there was very well rounded and the teachers were wonderful.”

She agrees with Ms. Canetti when she tells us, “It truly felt like you were part of a family. Everybody was friends with each other, often doing things together outside of school. The parents became our friends and it was such a nice feeling knowing that everyone there had the best interest of the children in mind; not just their child, but the other children as well.” Now that Rosalia is moving on, her mother tells us, “We are really going to miss our Summit Academy family.”

Ms. Canetti says that her favorite groups to work with have always been elementary through middle school students. “I think it’s important to have a good relationship with the kids, and from there you can build on their academics, their self-esteem and, if you don’t have a good rapport with the students and their parents, you’re not going to get anywhere. It’s important that the students feel welcome, that they are comfortable, and that they feel they can do it.” She tells me that she is not the typical principal, standing in the corner and observing. She likes to get involved, and meet the students and their parents face-to-face, understanding their variety of needs. She says, “My doors are always open to both the students, their parents, and the staff.“

With a population of approximately 475 students, Ms. Canetti shares, “Since we only have the kids until eighth grade, we want to create well rounded individuals to move further into the community, since they will be moving on to four years of high school. It’s not just about academics; it’s about each individual’s needs, and cultivating a more positive person in each of our students.”

Springs Soccer Club's U13 and U14 Boys Teams Advance to NPL Finals in Denver

By Ashley Ferraro

Springs Soccer Club has achieved an unprecedented milestone: both its U13 and U14 boys teams have won the National Premier League (NPL) South Division Playoffs in Orlando, earning spots in the NPL Finals in Denver this summer. The highly coveted NPL Finals, an annual event for U13 through U19 teams, will be held from July 8-14. This marks the first time in the club’s four-year history that not only one but two teams have qualified for the NPL Finals.

The playoffs that qualified both teams for the NPL Finals were held from April 26-28 at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Sanford, FL, near Orlando. The competition was fierce, but both Springs Soccer Club teams rose to the occasion, showcasing the club’s commitment to excellence both on and off the field.

The U13 boys team, coached by Anthony Corbett with assistant coach Camoy Williams, displayed exceptional skill and teamwork throughout the playoffs. In the first match on April 26, they drew 2-2 against Swan City. The following day, they triumphed over the Chargers with a 4-2 victory, showcasing their offensive strength. Finally, on April 28, they secured their spot in the NPL Finals with a 1-1 draw against the West Florida Flames. Their overall performance, marked by a combination of strategic play and relentless effort, earned them the top position in their division.

The U14 boys team, led by Matey Mateev, the Boys Director and Springs 2010 Elite Coach, also showcased remarkable resilience in Orlando. They kicked off the playoffs with a 1-0 win against Florida Elite Soccer Academy Palm Coast 2010 Boys Elite on April 26. The next day, they continued their winning streak with a 1-0 victory over Florida Hawks Futbol Club. Their final match on April 28 marked a phenomenal 6-0 win against the Chargers. With three wins and no losses, they dominated their division and secured their place in the finals.

The players, coaches, families, and the entire Springs Soccer Club organization are immensely proud and honored by this achievement. “Everyone is excited to head to Colorado in July,” says Matey Mateev.

Upon arriving in Denver on July 14th for the NPL Finals, the Springs Soccer Club U13 and U14 boys teams will compete against champions from various states. Following these matches, they will have the chance to advance to the semi-finals and ultimately the finals.

This milestone for the U13 and U14 boys teams is a testament to the club's mission to shape champions both on and off the field. Under the leadership of Executive Director Laurie Thomas and Director of Methodology Roger Thomas, Springs Soccer Club not only teaches soccer skills to players, but also cultivates character through values like competence, competitiveness, and Spring confidence.

As the teams prepare for the NPL finals in Denver, they look forward to continuing their legacy of excellence and making their mark on the national stage.
