Mirsky Digital MirskyDigital is led by Jennifer Mirsky, an editorial expert whose work for world-class brands spans I love a good content challenge.

Tell me what drives you, why you’re special, and the transformation you effect, and I’ll come up with compelling and effective ways to tell your story. Not once, but multiple times. Not in one medium but cross-platform. We need to go where your audience is and when your audience is. To find ways to keep your story fresh. To identify which mediums will make your story sing. Through a mix of content

strategy, content writing, and editorial programming, I’ll provide a roadmap for increasing awareness and engagement. We’ll help you stand out, in your voice and tone. My sweet spot is working with funded nonprofits and small businesses looking to grow. Typically, they’re too busy running their businesses to stop and share their story. That’s where my team and I come in.

"OK, I’m dead now."

Leave it to an epic content creator to art direct the announcement of his own death — in advance — to be posted on Instagram by his children.

The comments are priceless:

“You even managed to make dying cool. Damn you and your brilliance. RIP Jim.”— Eric Quennoy, Chief Creative Officer at Wieden + Kennedy Amsterdam

“10/10 copy. Kerning could use work.”— Jacobi Mehringer, Creative Director. Founder of Eyecandy.

“jim. please rewrite.” Juli Stonelake Hamdan

What a fascinating career and reinvention as a satirical artist. He even “turned himself into art,” posing naked to show “his body ravaged by cancer.”

It’s quite shocking and powerful.

Given my work with Bevival, I am moved by how he memorialized his end of life on his own terms.

“[Death] is a chapter. Work with it, write your own script. Don’t fear it any more than you’d fear birth, or puberty, or retirement. Take part in it with the important people around you.”—the late Bruce Wilson, a leading cardiologist in Milwaukee and Pittsburgh https://www.bevival.com/good-death/a-good-death

The magic hour.

I couldn’t resist the urge to capture the light.

And to memorialize the moment.

We were completely unprepared. No treats. No tennis balls. No Pooch Selfie (as seen on Shark Tank) — who knew?

Hilarity ensued (at least on my part).

Though we faced the camera, we seemed to mimic each other’s expression.

Eventually, a stranger and his dog appeared on the scene.

Channeling my best Blanche Dubois, I quipped that taking a dog selfie was harder than I had envisioned.

He took the hint and asked if I wanted him to take our picture.

Problem solved, though the result is certainly staid.

To write this post, I went down the proverbial rabbit hole as it were, researching the origin of selfies.

According to Rangefinder:

“Selfies skip the tripod. Some consider selfies to be only those taken with an outstretched hand, rather than in a mirror or with a tripod.”

What say you?

“Do you want to be helped, do you want to be hugged, or do you want to be heard?”

According to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Charles Duhigg, this is a technique used with children in schools.

Duhigg draws on his own experience of coming home, complaining about his workday, receiving good advice from his wife yet getting more upset that she isn’t supporting him.

He explains that we tend to think of a discussion as being about one thing — in this case, his workday. But every discussion is made up of three types of conversations: practical, emotional, and social.

“And if we’re not having the same kind of conversation at the same moment, that’s when miscommunication occurs,” he says.

In contrast, if someone is in an emotional state and you meet them where they are, you’ll be able to connect better with them.

I posit that we can draw on this when identifying our Unique Value Proposition as brands and businesses.

We have to ask ourselves, why are people coming to us? For information, inspiration, entertainment, support?

And how do they want us to engage with them? Practically, emotionally, or socially?

We can never lose sight of this.

"80% of success in life is just showing up."—Woody Allen

My friend/colleague Cliff Rubin and his band Skyfactor did just that.

They entered a CBS Mornings Mixtape Music Competition.

If you ask me, it's no contest, but the competition is still going strong and Skyfactor is a semifinalist!

So vote early. Vote daily:

I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW that Skyfactor is destined to win!

After all, they sing WAKE UP and what would be better than waking up with Skyfactor on CBS Mornings?!

“When we sing, we announce our existence,”—Bernice Johnson Reagon, in conversation with Bill Moyers.

Performer, activist, songwriter and scholar Bernice Johnson Reagon spent decades of her life singing and teaching traditional African American music and its cultural history.

I worked as a Researcher with Producer/Director/Writer Gail Pellett on “The Songs are Free with Bernice Johnson Reagon,” a one-hour special.

What a fabulous assignment.

I couldn’t believe I was being paid to hole myself up at the NBC News archives and watch hours of concert footage from her a ca****la ensemble, Sweet Honey in the Rock.

Or that I was assigned to find archival footage such as Bernice singing “Go tell it on the mountain” with Fannie Lou Hamer at the Democratic National Convention in 1964. (Fascinating backstory at the link below)

A particular personal triumph was securing a clip of “Wade in the Water.” Not just any clip, but a clip where someone from the congregation stood up to do the “call” and the rest of the congregation did the “response.” As opposed to the preacher doing the “call” and the congregation doing the “response.”

Said Bernice, "People who come out of the congregational tradition will sing along and they will take a song away from the choir. They will take a song and it’s called 'taking a song away.' If it’s in the air, you’ve got as much right to hit it as anybody else going."

It took me about 10 calls with the late Alan Lomax to convince him of the need for an in-person visit with him and his archive.

For anyone who isn’t familiar with him, he singlehandedly recorded thousands of pieces of folk music all across America and preserved it for posterity. Years later, a team created the (unfinished?) Global Jukebox, where visitors can map music and dance patterns that were happening simultaneously in far-flung parts of the world.

Bernice was fierce. When I asked her to sign a release, she schooled me about how I asked.

She was a force of nature.

Beautiful.

Talented.

Smart.

I love that she preserved cultural legacy through song.

May her memory be a blessing.

1️⃣ “How are you feeling?”

2️⃣ “What is your goal?”

3️⃣ “Who can you ask for help?”

These three questions set the table for a fabulous leadership retreat.

We stood in a circle rather than at individual tables at facilitator Aaron James' direction. This created an open dialogue and instant sense of community.

Thank you to my client, Lutheran Social Services of New York, for including me in this retreat. What a progressive, warm, welcoming group of professionals who care deeply about creating positive change for New Yorkers and those newly arrived to the US.

Remember Maria Callas in the theatrical production, "Master Class?" She said, "You need a look"...then pointed at a member of the audience and said drolly, "You. You don't have one. Go get one."

Well, just sub in the word "website" for "look."

Anyone in business needs a website. One that looks good. That functions well. That's optimized for mobile etc., etc.

The same goes for a web designer/developer. You need a resource who is responsive and easy to work with. One who doesn't go MIA and leave you high and dry.

So I'm putting in a good word for my colleague Cliff Rubin. He's a pleasure to work with. He makes it easy and painless. And fun.

He also plays a mean bass with his band Skyfactor. That's not relevant. But it's worth mentioning!

Please join me as my guest at BNI Chapter 1 New York City on Wednesday, July 10th at 7 a.m. at The Cornell Club. Cliff is the featured interviewee.

Until then, I wish y'all a Happy Fourth! (Yes, I'm down South right now.)

Are you proud of your website?

Web designer Cliff Rubin wants to be "as proud of your website as you are" (once he's done working on your site that is!).

Trust us — You don't want to have a web designer/developer who takes forever to call you back or who goes MIA.

You want someone who is responsive and easy to work with ... a professional.

Cliff describes your website as your Secret Sales Weapon because it is out there working for you 24/7.

So join us bright and early Wednesday, July 10th at 7 a.m. at The Cornell Club. 6 East 44th Street, New York, NY 10017. Floor varies/ please ask in lobby.

Cliff will be in VP Jay B Zimner’s interview hot seat.

You'll also meet more than 40 professionals from a wide range of fields.

“A true portrait should, today and a hundred years from today, be the testimony of how this person looked and what kind of human being he was.”—Philippe Halsman

Philippe should know. He took an iconic photograph of Albert Einstein.

Not the one with his tongue sticking out.

The one where his weary eyes confront the camera. (Apparently he had been expressing regrets about his role in the development of an atomic bomb.)

The image that was used on a US postage stamp.

That graced the cover of TIME magazine when it dubbed Einstein the “person of the century.”

As a researcher at Bill Moyers’ Public Affairs TV in the early 90s, I had the privilege of visiting Philippe’s widow Yvonne at her New York City home. My task: Secure the rights to include said photograph in a World of Ideas montage about Leo Braudy, author of “The Frenzy of Renown: Fame and Its History.” (Thanks to the Moyers archive at Library of Congress, I was able to check my memory and screenshot part of the montage: http://bit.ly/WOIbraudy. Along with colleagues, I visited DC for the celebration of this archive.)

“Being the testimony” is a high bar. The photographer or writer or filmmaker needs to get it just right.

Of course, a creative professional will bring one’s personality to bear and this will influence the work.

But the portrait needs to capture the person’s essence.

Now why was I thinking about portraits?

Because of tomorrow’s presenter at BNI Chapter 1 New York City — Melissa Mae Kors.

Melissa is a professional artist who specializes in portraits of people and pets.

She also does live event painting, such as she did in years past to capture the essence of the Jay B Zimner Invitational. (PS See photos of her in action. The 11th annual invitational is coming up June 10th. Last call to support Steve's Camp at Horizon Farms by securing your spot on the golf course, tennis court, poker table or veranda for lunch!)

I hope you’ll join me bright and early tomorrow to watch Melissa talk about her process and showcase her creations.
