GRAVITY GIRLS

We don’t have the massive infrastructure or bottomless resources the likes of France, the United Kingdom and the United States enjoy. Our population is tiny and the number of events limited, so how did our little island nation produce a crop of world-beating junior women downhillers?

It’s a story of raw talent and hard work, but also a story of dedicated volunteers and grassroots organisations. It’s a story that starts with the riders themselves. Read Meg Elliot’s feature story on our website now.

DIGGING THE DREAM
What would you do if you had access to a plot of land with dream dirt? Build your own trail nirvana, of course.
Head to the website now to read Andrew Hamer-Adams’ yarn about how two buddies, with the help of some friends, built their own trail network near the Kapiti Coast in Wellington.

The family of a Wellington man with a long-time passion for mountain biking and retro mountain bikes has gifted some of his collection to the Wellington Mountain Bike Club to raise funds for trail building.

Aaron Barbono (passed away suddenly on 26 August 2021 aged 44. Aaron’s mother Agnes has gifted five of his vintage mountain bikes and many parts to the Wellington Mountain Bike Club (WMBC) to help raise funds for the club.

Local trail building group Brooklyn Trail Builders (BTB) has been chosen to receive the funds and are organising their sale.

Local bike shop MyRide is helping to get the bikes ready for sale and will have them on display at their Vivian St store for potential buyers to view.

The bikes will be sold individually on auction site Trade Me over the coming weeks and WMBC, BTB and Spoke will have more information about the auctions.

Trek’s new Slash+ brings the quiet, natural-feeling assist of the TQ HPR50 system to the Slash’s long-travel, high-pivot platform with a new bigger battery.

Built for riders who love the feel of a non-motorised bike, Trek has minimised range anxiety by combining the whisper-quiet TQ HPR50 motor with a new, bigger 580WH battery. A 160WH, bottle-cage mounted ranger extender is available for even bigger days out. The main battery is removable and compatible with the smaller 360WH battery if more weight savings are needed.

We’re excited to review the Trek Slash+, so look out for our thoughts and insights soon.

"The Sweet Protection Bushwhacker 2Vi is the epitome of the modern high end helmet – sleek yet oversized, laden with every possible safety feature and dripping in auspicious functionality. This parks it at the top end of the helmet market both in terms of performance but also price. However, safety and fit are the paramount features in any helmet, and I feel that Sweet’s strong focus on these key areas makes the Bushwhacker a standout. If your brain is not worth the investment, then I’m not sure what is."

Snaking from the alpine through rock, tussock, and beech forest, Kaimanawa Alpine Adventures' grade 3 trail rides like a 23km-long pump track draped down the mountain side. The experience begins with a helicopter ride that swoops through bush clad clefts, alighting on a peak with views that sweep across the epic volcanic landscape of the central plateau. It's a marvel of trail building and a truly unique riding experience. Read more in the next issue of Spoke Magazine.
