Join us in celebrating 30 years of Walt Disney Animation Studios' “The Lion King,” which was released on June 24, 1994! More than 600 artists, animators, and technicians contributed to the animated classic, producing more than one million drawings, 1,197 hand-painted backgrounds, and 119,058 individually colored frames of film.

Did you know? Animator, story artist, and Disney Legend Mel Shaw, who contributed to such Disney classics as “Fantasia” (1940) and “Bambi” (1942), contributed early story concepts for the film, including this pastel painting, when the project was known as “King of the Jungle.”
