Back in 1992 Slam Productions released 'The Vortex Tapes' by legendary free jazz saxophonist Elton Dean. It was recorded live at the Vortex Club in London in 1990, with various groups who perform five epic free jazz jams. Featuring Keith Tippett, Paul Rutherford, Howard Riley, Trevor Watts, Louis Moholo, Tony Levin, Paul Rogers and Mark Sanders amongst others.

“An ideal starting point for anyone yet to make the acquaintance of this still undersung British altoist.” - Chris Blackford, Rubberneck.

It's available on Bandcamp (CD/DL) and our YouTube channel: https://linktr.ee/slam_productions

The second release on Slam Productions was this wonderful concert by Lol Coxhill (soprano saxophone), George Haslam (baritone saxophone), Howard Riley (piano), Paul Rutherford (trombone). Recorded in various solo, duo and trio settings - as well as one epic 16 minute quartet improvisation - at The Holywell Music Room, Oxford, 22nd Feb 1990.

'The Holywell Concert' was recorded by Michael Gerzon as part of his extensive documentation of live improvised music in Oxford and London. His first recordings in the Holywell date back to 1967. For this concert a simple stereo-pair microphone technique was used to capture the sound of the room as well as the musicians.

“It is for free followers only - but excellent.” - Barry McRae, Jazz Journal

"The final track Oxford is the full quartet unleashing and Coxhill is playing as a true co-operator, as he did as a member of the 30-plus-strong London Improvisers' Orchestra or rock-steady bands with Rico Rodriguez or bop formations with Stan Tracey and Bobby Wellins - full of empathy, sonic unity and ensemble generosity with whomever he shared the performance." - Chris Searle, Morning Star

The debut release on Slam Productions was '1989 - and All That' (SLAMCD301), which saw label founder George Haslam (baritone saxophone) and Paul Rutherford (trombone) recorded at The Jericho Tavern, Oxford 12th April 1989, in a series of solo and duo settings. It's now available on Bandcamp (CD/DL) and YouTube: https://linktr.ee/slam_productions

"One of the most interesting record productions made in jazz in recent years. Haslam proves himself to be an excellent baritone player." - Rockerilla

“The fury of Rutherford...the sensitivity and attack of Haslam...such experiences are very rare.”- Jazz Passion, France.

"Rutherford's advanced technique for eliciting amazingly diverse textures from the sliphorn makes for a continuum of expressive excellence. Haslam possesses an attack and timbre that speaks directly to the blues roots of his music." - Cadence

"A superb piece of Ruthermanship. Not since the Ellington plunger men has anyone so successfully translated the trombone tone into the sound of the human voice." - Jazz Journal
