Gerry Alanguilan, though widely known for his iconic Hey, Baby! smile 'bidyos', was a brilliant inker for Marvel and a frequent collaborator with Leinil Francis Yu. Beyond his international acclaim, he was a beloved local comic book creator with award-winning works like "Elmer" and "Wasted." He also founded the Komikero Komiks Museum, preserving the rich history of Filipino comics.

On a personal level, he has inspired me, along with countless other local creators, to write and illustrate comic books, rekindling my love for works by local creators. This inspiration led to the founding of the independent publishing house Super D***l Robot Comics with Tom C Perez and R.L. Bertulfo.

Gerry, along with Jonas Diego, were among the first people we consulted when Tom C. Perez, Ruben Laborte Agustin, and I first conceptualized a comic book-focused event in Cebu, which eventually became Cebu Comicon.

His legacy continues to inspire local creators and shape the world of comics.

Circa: Oct 13, 2013 - Working on a Sunday Night

Reflecting on the past is a powerful reminder of my journey and where I currently stand. It's surreal to acknowledge that, even today, I continue to pursue my dream job. While I presently work as a comic book artist and a 2D animator, my professional aspirations have evolved, the challenges have heightened, and the economic and industry landscape has transformed significantly over the past decade.

This reality brings to mind the struggles individuals face in third-world countries, where, despite our relentless efforts, we continue to reside in meager conditions. I was not born into wealth, privilege, or political influence—I am an ordinary individual aspiring for a better life. The daily battle for improvement is a constant in my life and something many face.

Keep Fighting a good fight!

As a favorite manga protagonist, I liked, said, 'He died doing what he wanted, no matter what, right? I bet he was happy.'

It stuck in me for decades.
