One of the key tests to be considered as a police dog candidate is the “Hunt Test.” In this test submitted to the K-9 Protectors, Ron was taken to multiple locations where he had to search for a toy we hid, building duration on the amount of time he had to wait before searching. This test focuses on hunt drive, testing Ron’s ability to search for an extended period of time without losing interest, without handler intervention, and without giving up until he found the toy. Ron’s concentration and intensity to find the toy each time proved he has an incredibly strong hunt drive, which is key for scent work, like narcotics or explosives detection used by police. Once Ron starts his formal training, he will learn to associate a certain scent with a high value reward (i.e. a toy), and will search for these scents above all others.
