Street vendor selling mummies in Egypt
1865
During the Victorian era of the 1800s, Napoleon’s conquest of Egypt threw open the Gates of Egypt’s history for the Europeans. At that time, mummies were not accorded the respect that they deserved from the European elites and in fact, mummies could be purchased from street vendors (as shown in the picture) to be used as the main event for parties and social gatherings that took place in the 18th century.

Controversy soars among archaeologists as human ancestor fossils sent to edge of space
In an unprecedented and ethically contentious move, fragments of ancient human ancestor fossils, including Australopithecus sediba and Homo naledi, were transported to the edge of space aboard a Virgin Galactic flight. The controversial mission received criticism from the scientific community for lacking a clear scientific purpose and for potentially risking the priceless specimens in case of a mission malfunction.
Lee Berger, an explorer and National Geographic Society explorer-in-residence, who played a crucial role in the discovery of both ancient species, selected the fossils for this journey. The specimens included a 2-million-year-old fragment of the collarbone of Australopithecus sediba and a thumb bone from Homo naledi, dating back 300,000 years...

Medieval Christogram tattoo found in Nubian burial
A team of scientists, including Kari A. Guilbault of Purdue University, was studying a 1,300-year-old body unearthed in a cemetery near the Ghazali monastery in Sudan, which is known for its historical significance and sits approximately 9.3 miles from the Nile River. The individual, who likely lived between 667 and 774 CE, had a remarkable tattoo on their right foot.
The tattoo contains a Christogram, an ancient Christian symbol, made by combining the Greek letters “chi” and “rho” to form an abbreviation for Christ. Additional Greek letters, alpha (A) and omega (Ω), representing the beginning and end, enhance the Christogram...

The lower dungeon of Warwick Castle features an ancient chamber known as an "oubliette," where prisoners were abandoned and left to be forgotten. An oubliette is characterized by its concealed location, accessible solely through a trapdoor in the ceiling. These hidden dungeons were prevalent in medieval castles and served as confinement for various types of captives, ranging from political detainees to common thieves. Oubliettes were cramped, dimly lit, and narrow cavities within the larger dungeon, allowing for no means of escape due to the single entrance and exit.

A Viking helmet was discovered in Yarm, a small town in the English county of Yorkshire. This helmet, found during the 1950s by workers installing sewage pipes, is a rare example of tenth-century Viking armor. It is the first of its kind ever found in Britain and only the second nearly complete Viking helmet in the world. The other was found in Gjermundbu, Norway, in 1943.

Glass is an inheritance from the Roman era. Although glass melting didn’t necessarily “died out” after the “fall” of the Western Roman Empire, it certainly was more common in the early Merovingian dynasty (5th century).
