A family wedding = two days lying down to prepare + ⚡️⚡️⚡️ + two days lying down to recover. Everything becomes a calculation, a careful calibration, and yet it is still so prone to error. — from On Making Mulch by Emma Yearwood / SICK magazine issue 6

We want to hear from our readers! 💌 For our issue 6 community column, we want to know:
What is one thing in your care practice you wish non-disabled folks would either incorporate into their own routines or acknowledge as a valid form of self-care?

What does ‘rest as resistance’ mean to you? In what ways do you rest/does your rest feel like a revolution?

Comment, DM, or email [email protected] with the subject line ‘Community Column’ to share your response to one or both questions.

Please be sure keep your responses to 65 words or less and include your name as you would like it to appear in the magazine, as well as your location. Due to limited space, please note that submitting a response does not guarantee publication.

SICK will be accepting submissions for our sixth issue very soon! ✨ We are very excited to share that we received a project grant from the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation that will go towards producing this issue. This has also allowed us to open our submission window earlier in the year, pushing forward our publication timeline by about two months. For our sixth issue, we will be publishing work selected from our open submission period in addition to work by people we admire who were invited to contribute.

I know how difficult it can be to put a submission together in a short amount of time while dealing with illness and disability. I am hoping that announcing submissions are opening soon will give folks a bit of extra time to prepare. Our updated submission guidelines are available to read on our website, and I can’t wait to see your work! Please do not submit until the window officially opens - more info next week!

About RJSE/ for transparency: SICK micro-grants are sponsored by The Robert J. Spring Endowment for Sculptors. Robert (Bob) Spring was my grandfather, who worked as the president of Modern Art Foundry for over 45 years. He took over operations from his father, who founded the lost wax bronze casting foundry in Astoria, Queens, in 1932. Bob was an iconic figure in the industry, working closely with artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Jacques Lipchitz, and Tracey Emin, among many others, to bring their creations to life. My father, Jeffrey Spring, now runs the foundry’s operations and began the Modern Art Foundry Foundation and Robert J. Spring Endowment in honor and celebration of Bob and his ambitious, larger-than-life personality, in addition to his commitment to serving artists and the world of casting. I (Olivia) now sit on the MAFF Board of Directors alongside my father, Jeffrey, Lani Tarozzi, Laura Spring, Mary Jo Bursig, and Matthew Bursig. Learn more at foundationmaf.org

Getting to put together a zine-focused reading room about disability & chronic illness was a dream! I could have filled this room with so many more more books and zines. My aim was to include a diverse range of voices, experiences, and styles through different formats, while keeping texts at a short enough length for people to either read in one sitting, or be able to dip in and out of with ease. Full list of titles below!

Sick (21. 6. 2023 - 18. 7. 2023) at / curated by Urška Aplinc & Lara Plavčak / featuring Johanna Hedva, Finnegan Shannon, Olivia Spring (SICK Magazine), & RA Walden

‘The exhibition Sick features works by artists who identify as disabled and/or chronically ill and thus wishes to bring the experience of illness and disability, often associated with the private, into the public sphere. The exhibition includes works by international artists Johanna Hedva, Finnegan Shannon and RA Walden, as well as a reading room curated by writer Olivia Spring. In their practice and artworks, the artists explore the lived experience of illness/disability as that nexus of class, race and gender that is usually overlooked in discussions of intersectionality and political activism.’

ID: An abstract blue body rests on a bed. The bed is covered in a green and tan duvet, with green squiggles and leaves alluding to the natural world. There are two yellow, lightly patterned pillows and a pink pillow beneath a black headboard. The wall behind the bed is red, drawn in marker and showing brushstrokes. The header SICK is in tan, and below it, a small blue window.

ID: Id: A surreal collage. The background is a vintage newspaper. In the foreground is a hill, with a girl sitting on it, her legs stretched out. Where her head should be, there is a large brown mushroom. A fly is perched on it. More mushrooms emerge from beside her, and from her wrists.
