James Gunn's Ad Astra James Gunn’s Ad Astra combines the best parts of creative magazines and scholarly journals and brings them to Web. All articles will be reviewed by peers.

We will showcase the imaginations of creators and fans, and will show the research and study of scholars inspired by speculative fiction. We are a volunteer organization under the auspices of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction at the University of Kansas. We are working in partnership with the CSSF’s educational outreach program, AboutSF. After our initial publication in June of 2012, Ad

Astra will maintain a stream of content through the year. We will also publish the proceedings of the annual Campbell Conference, which will include selected readings and presentations from Ad Astra. All submissions will be reviewed by volunteer readers and editors, as well as the advisory board. If you wish to contact us, please email any messages to the editor at the following address: [email protected] so that we can give you a more complete and private response than can be provided on social media.

Is...Is it time for another writing prompt? Let's go! You pick up where we leave off.

The clock strikes twelve. Except this is no ball-- you tug at your bowtie, your eyes flickering past the hoard of well-to-do investors and scholars. Intergalactic conventions might've not made you nervous, but they certainly did not ease the mind.

What could you possibly present that will impress them? His haughty voice fills your head.

A chime interrupts your thoughts, as a squid in a tuxedo emerges. With a last exhale, you make your way to the stage to present...

Writing Prompt: It’s 2049. Clean energy has become the standard energy source for the past five years, and your company is the leading source of green energy for exploratory aircrafts. Your work is not so glamorous though; you work in the greenhouse, tending to highly-sought after plants, which are used to power said aircrafts. The flowers are radiant and the work is easy.
One bright morning, you find the security system deactivated, twelve flowers missing, and your fully sentient-AI colleague, Joe, is nowhere to be seen. On the floor, you find a scrunched-up ad from your company, that says this:

Friendly reminder to keep going! After all, who said writing was easy?

Bouncy, vibrant green moss squished beneath your feet. Thick, burgundy corduroy between your fingers. An overcast sky, set with rolling clouds.

Whether it is in writing or existing, colors are integral to our worlds. But what happens when that all changes?

Check out "Visualizing Reality" by T.A. LaPar in our latest edition to experience it for yourself.

Cool drops of dew splashing against my ankles. A woman. Warmth. Love. Just out of reach. The back of my neck. Itching. Burning. A sudden change—...

Perihelion took place January 2nd, 7:38PM ET. This is the time when the sun is the closest to Earth. In the spirit of Perihelion, here is a writing prompt:

You never expected to live this long. Yet, here you are.

Ever since the catastrophe disrupted the solar system, people have been sparse. The sun is blinking further and further away, after the public failure demarcated astronomy's limits. Even still, something inside you screams to investigate the lab. Why is there still life? Is there an unknown safety measure in place? Foreign help? Extraterrestrial help?

Your stomach churns. If so, how long will it last?

Enough guesses. Finally, you approach the door.
