𝗞𝗶𝗺 𝗞𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝗸𝗸𝗶𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗲 🥢

Kim Keat Hokkien Mee - Official serves a special Hokkien Mee that is prepared in a claypot ($11.00 to $27.50). It is quite appetising to see the Hokkien Mee bubbling in the claypot 🔥

We have eaten Kim Keat Hokkien Mee a couple of times, and we always come to the same conclusion: It looks better than it tastes 📸

The alkaline taste of the Yellow Egg Noodles is quite distinct, and the Prawn Stock lack the required crustacean flavours. The Stock is stronger in pork taste, and there is hardly any Prawn flavours 🍜

The Prawns are peeled for easy eating, there are some Clams, Sotong and Pork Belly slices in the dish. The small Lard bits are crunchy. However, the bigger Lard bits are tough, and they offer nothing to elevate the dish 🦐

If you are looking for wok hei, there is none here. The Hokkien Mee looks good, but that is all that Kim Keat Hokkien Mee offer 🤷🏻‍♀️

We do not know why we keep revisiting when they keep on failing to reach the required standard 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thankfully, Toa Payoh has got other Fried Hokkien Mee that are way better for the residents living in the area 😐

𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗣𝗶𝗲? 🥧

On 9 April 2024, co-founder of popular Banana Pie shop Dona Manis Cake Shop, 74 year old Mdm Soh Tho Lang (Auntie Peng), left Dona Manis Cake Shop to set up Auntie Peng Banana Pie right next door to Dona Manis Cake Shop 👩🏻

While many would feel that this would create unnecessary rivalry (given that Auntie Peng Banana Pie is set up in the same premise), both shop owners have remarked that there is no bad blood between both camps 🤔

The recipe for both Banana Pies are largely similar, with minor differences. The only thing that we can do is to do a taste test to compare both Banana Pies 🍽️

1️⃣ Top: Auntie Peng Banana Pie - $3.30 per slice, $33.00 for a whole pie (10 slices)
2️⃣ Bottom: Dona Manis Cake Shop - $3.50 per slice, $33.00 for a whole pie (10 slices)

Auntie Peng's Banana Pie appears to have a light-coloured crust on the inside, while Dona Manis's Banana Pie has a brownish-coloured crust. In terms of size, Dona Manis's version is taller, while Auntie Peng's version is slightly flatter 📏

For taste, both pies have a buttery crust. However, Auntie Peng's Banana filling is more tightly packed, and it tastes more ripe and fragrant. Dona Manis's Banana filling is more loose, and it is less ripe and fragrant as compared to Auntie Peng's 🍌

So which Banana Pie is better? While both are undeniably good, our vote goes to Auntie Peng's simply because the Banana filling is definitely better than Dona Manis' 🗳️

We also tried Auntie Peng's Coconut Tarts (4 pieces for $6.00) and they are quite good! The tart shell is thin and crumbly, and the coconut filling is not too sweet 🥥

Auntie Peng also sells a couple of other cakes such as Orange Cake, Pandan Cake, Chocolate Cake, Butter Cakes, Kueh Bahulu, Scones , Cream Horns and Rum Balls 🍫

L.E. Cafe Confectionery & Pastry is known for their Bean Curd Tarts. It is a tart made with a a buttery crust and bean curd filling, served chilled ❄️

We do like the taste of the Bean Curd Tart, as the filling is not too sweet, and the tart shell is crumbly. However, we cannot help but feel that a warm and crusty tart shell is better than one that is chilled (which makes it slightly damp) 🤔

Do trying warming the tart in a toaster oven. It probably would be much better! 🔥

We decided to splurge a little at DON DON DONKI Singapore, and we got Chutoro! It is a premium medium-fatty cut of the Bluefin Tuna, and it has a great texture. It is just a little sweet, and it is not oily (unlike the Otoro which is fatty and oily). Many people would regard the Chutoro as the best cut of the Tuna, even though the Otoro is more expensive 🐟

We also got some Salmon and Swordfish Sashimi, and these are the prices that we paid:
1️⃣ Bluefin Tuna Chutoro - $17.80
2️⃣ Mekajiki (Swordfish) Sashimi - $13.80
3️⃣ Atlantic Salmon Sashimi ($10.80/100g) - $15.34

Cheaper than dining in a Japanese restaurant for the same items, and the quality is very, very good 🎌

That Coffee Place is a standalone eatery at Sengkang that sells a wide variety of food 🍛

It has 2 separate kitchens. One kitchen is in charge of Chinese cuisine such as Tze Char dishes, Wanton Noodles, Chicken Rice and Cai Fan. The other kitchen makes Malay Cuisine, and their Menu includes Nasi Padang, Mee Rebus, Lontong, Mee Siam, Mee Soto and Nasi Lemak 🍜

We often get Nasi Padang from here, as we really like the Beef Rendang, Sayur Lodeh and Begedil. The Beef Rendang is sweet, with tender meat that can easily be pulled apart 🥔

Curry Chicken is pretty good too. However, do avoid ordering the Fried Egg, as it's quality is rather bad 🍳

This second flowering is producing really good durians. We recalled that we ordered from Durian Baby a few years ago, and they sold us really good durians! 👍🏻

The Pahang Mao Shan Wang durians from Durian Baby were on point, with intense flavours. They were vacuum sealed in a packaging for optimum freshness. The vacuum seal also means that the smell will not affect people around you that badly should you decide to bring it onto public transport for a short while. Shhhh 🤫

The Durian Baby should be all grown up by now 👼🏻

We like what we picked. It is an elevated Salmon Maki, with a nice zesty taste and creaminess from the Mayonnaise, and a slight crunch from the Wasabi Yuzu Crunch. The Enoki Mushroom Tempura is surprisingly not oily. The Chicken Karaage Donburi is a safe choice here. It is good, and is the the more affordable item on Maki-San's Menu 🍚

You literally get to choose ingredients that you like here! If you don't like your resulting Maki, it's entirely on you 🤭

Ocean Curry Fish Head sells more than just their Signature Assam Curry Fish Head. They are basically a Cai Fan / Zi Char Stall too! You don't have to buy a whole Curry Fish Head from them in order to dine at Ocean Curry Fish Head. You can buy a plate of Cai Fan, or order some of their dishes to share with your fellow diners 🥘

If you really want to eat their Assam Curry Fish, but you don't want to buy the whole Curry Fish Head (which costs $45), you can simply buy a slice of the Fish for just $10 too! 🐟

Everything tastes good! The Fish is extremely fresh, and the meat is super soft and delicate! The Cockles is also fresh and briny! The Mutton Rendang is tender and easy to pull apart, and the Rendang is thick and tasty! 🍖

Excellent food, but really not cheap. It is Ocean Curry Fish Head, it is gonna be like that 🤷🏻‍♂️

𝗛𝗼𝗸𝗸𝗶𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝗼 𝗘𝗿 🦐

Bao Er Cafe is really popular now, with many customers heading there for their famed Kaya Butter Toast and Hokkien Prawn Mee 🍞

We tried their Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee from Prawnography Singapore before, and we were quite amazed by the quality, portion and pricing. The Noodles had good Prawn flavours, and the Fried Lard really elevated the dish. It was something that we would have again should we ever return 😲

However, when we went back to have it again, we find that the quality is inconsistent. The Noodles were quite flat tasting, and the Fried Lard was not crispy. It is sorely lacking wok hei, and for us, it was a below average plate of Fried Hokkien Mee 📉

Definitely signs of inconsistency! We hope that they can maintain a high standard instead of delivering sub-par quality food 😐

MK Levure Naturelle is a bakery located in Kallang Wave Mall (at the extreme end of the mall). Walk along the food lane until you reach the end, and you will find them! ⚽

Apart from selling sweet and savoury bread and buns, Levure Naturelle makes fresh waffles on the spot. The waffles are THICC, and they are pillowy soft 🍞

Prices are definitely on the high side:

1️⃣ Plain Waffle - $2.50
2️⃣ Classic Waffle - $3.00
3️⃣ Premium Waffle - $3.50
4️⃣ Durian Waffle - $4.30

The Classic Waffle includes single spread of common flavours like Kaya, Butter, Cream Cheese, Peanut Butter etc. Premium Waffles are more fanciful, with flavours such as Ham & Cheese, Cranberry Cream Cheese, Banana Chocolate, Kaya Butter (since it has 2 types of spread, it is categorises as "Premium") 🥜

We got a Butter Waffle (Classic Waffle) and an Oreo Cream Cheese Waffle (Premium Waffle). We had to wait for approximately 10 minutes for our waffles to be ready since it was around dinner timing ⏱️

The waffles are really good. The thickness justifies the pricing, and the amount of spread given is generous 😋

Do be cautious if you order Butter Waffle. It can be quite oily and messy! 🧈

We have dined at Tims Restaurant & Cafe a number of times, and we find that the food is really good value for the money! The Set Lunch comes with a Soup, Garlic Bread, Drink and Dessert, and they are definitely restaurant quality items! ☕

All the food we had is good, no complaints. The food is flavourful, and the portion size is significant. Even though the dessert cake looks simple, it is very, very yummy! Served slightly warm, it is so good that we wished we had more! 🤤

Chin Kee 77 is known to be a Roasted Meat Stall, but they also sell many other dishes such as Ipoh Claypot Chicken Rice, Herbal Bak K*t Teh, Braised Pig Trotter, Fishball Soup and Pig Stomach Soup 🍖

Jack of all trades 💪🏻

The Pig Stomach Soup ($5.80) resembles a Bak K*t Teh Soup, with Pig Stomach instead of Spare Ribs. The Soup is tasty, though we feel that it could use more pepper. There is a lot of Coriander and Spring Onion given. The Pig Stomach is cleaned well, and it is cooked till soft. Pretty good effort, with some room for improvement! ☘️

Ever since we posted about Xing Le Xing Hainanese Chicken Rice, the queue at the stall has gotten longer. They are now the most popular stall at Happy Hawkers, with the longest queue during meal hours (even longer than Tai Wah Pork Noodles) 🚶🏻‍♂️

Superb quality Chicken with soft Liver and grainy rice. Their Ginger Sauce and Chilli Sauce is very good too! 🌶️

Not too happy that we need to stand in line to get our Chicken Rice now, but we are happy to see them do well 🥲

We attended a wedding at Mandarin Oriental, Singapore Hotel. The ballroom is brightly lit, with a big curved LED screen at the stage ✨

3️⃣ Premium South African 6-Head Abalone with Sea Cucumber and Spinach
4️⃣ Cod Fish with Cordyceps Flower and Shredded Chicken

Food quality is very good. The Chicken Roulade is yummy, and the Fish Maw Soup is so delicious. The 6-Head Abalone is plump with good flavours, and the Cod Fish is so moist and soft. We enjoyed free-flow Fried Mini Buns to pair with the Chilli Crabmeat Sauce 🦀

Service from the banquet staff is very good! Also, every serving is individually plated 🍽️

Stock seems to be limited as they ran out of Bee Hoon when we arrived. We bought their Dry Laksa, and we really like it. It has a good spiciness, and it is delicious 🤤

The Pasta dishes are alright. They would not impress you, but for the price, you cannot complain 🍝

Skip the Tiramisu. It ain't Tiramisu. That monstrosity is a bad end to any meal 🙅🏻‍♂️

The Garlic Aioli Burger is made using 2 smashed beef patties with melted jack cheese, garlic aioli, fresh tomato slices, butter lettuce and a special in-house hamburger sauce. Served with Fries and Coleslaw. Pretty decent burger, but we thought that the brioche buns could be better. Perhaps using potato buns would elevate this burger 🍔

The Fried Chicken (served with Fries and Coleslaw) is decent, and it is nicely seasoned. The Beef Lasagna is made using pasta, ground beef, mushrooms, spinach, melted cheese, basil and tomato gravy 🍗

The Firehouse Happy Birthday Sundae invokes nostalgia. It is what we had when we were kids, and having it again at Swensen's just brings back so many memories 💭

Most of the above are decent, and we would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Seafood White Bee Hoon. That Coffee Place actually makes a REALLY GOOD Seafood White Bee Hoon, with 2 fresh and large prawns and squid pieces. The Prawns are not your typical peeled Hor Fun Prawns that come frozen in a bag. They are legit fresh and big ones! 🦐

The Char Siew Wanton Mee is also quite good. You know, sometimes Char Siew can be dry like cardboard. The Char Siew that we get here is slightly fatty, and it is soft and tender. Good Noodles and seasoning sauce! The Wanton Soup is also tasty! 🍜

We would tell you to avoid the Sliced Fish Soup. We find that it is weird with Lettuce and Snow Peas. The audacity to charge $9.00 for it 🙅🏻‍♂️
