Lessons about prayer from three cats

We visited our extended family over the Easter holiday. Our oldest daughter could not join us because of work and university commitments. This meant that we did not have to bring the cats with us, because she would be at home to look after them.

I would miss them, but I knew they were in safe hands; they would thankfully not have to endure the car trip; and I would not have to worry about them escaping from the extended family’s house, as Dante had during the Christmas holiday.

She was missing for a day and a half, until my husband’s family found her hiding in the space between their house and the house next door. They had gently managed to coax her out, while I had been shopping for food and praying for a miracle.

Is this not a bit like us? We escape to new places in search of freedom and adventure, perhaps too busy to connect with God in prayer, and ending up lost and hiding in a tight spot, too scared to emerge, until we are found.

But like my family, God is there, patiently urging us not to fear, to come out of hiding and to come home.

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise…. Instead he is patient with you.” 2 Peter 3:9 (NIV)

After the Easter holiday, we returned home, and all was well. A couple of hours later I was tucked up in bed and both cats jumped on the bed too. Dante usually just visits to say goodnight, as if to top up her affection tank, before leaving the room. Shiquita, however, often stays, secure on or near my warm, reliable presence. This time, after a week apart, both cats nuzzled up to me, clearly glad to have me home.

Is this not a bit like God? Even after a prolonged absence, he is overjoyed to have us return to him, secure in his reliable presence. But unlike us, who were absent from our home, it is not God who disappears from us, but us who go our own way.

Just like the father in the story of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32), as soon as he saw his son returning home, “while he was still a long way off, (he) saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.” Luke 15:20 (ESV)

The family next door have just adopted a beautiful grey tabby cat called Tiffin. She is playful, alert, fearless, and maybe a little mischievous, I have seen him jump off a neighbour’s garden wall to the path below, up onto a parked car, diving across the road, and back to his garden. As I was reversing onto my drive recently, the cat’s human father and son had been on a cycle ride. They climbed off their bikes, and as they passed behind my car, there was Tiffin, in hot pursuit. He had clearly recognised them whilst on his own adventure and followed them into his new home.

It amazes me the distance some cats will go when they are exploring their territory, and how they manage to find their way home. It’s like they have some instinctive, internal GPS tracking system within them, so even if they go away from home, they know how to find their way back home.

When we connect with God through prayer, we too are like Tiffin, recognising who we belong to.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Are you listening God?

Recently, a group of my girlfriends got together, when one friend stopped the conversation saying, “I see your lips moving, but all I hear is ‘blah, blah, blah!’” We all laughed, and we still laugh about the day my friend just couldn’t listen anymore.

Do you sometimes feel God is tired of hearing from you? Do you feel God is tired of hearing the same requests every day, especially when your requests are multiple times a day?

Be encouraged today! The Bible says God doesn’t ignore your prayers. He listens to your cries, your heartache, and your worries. He listens when you call out to Him in the middle of the night.

Don’t give up hope in the Lord, He is always there waiting to hear from you. Remember, you are God’s child. You are heir to the kingdom of God! He loves you and is always ready to listen to you.

“If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But God did listen! He paid attention to my prayer. Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer or withdraw his unfailing love from me.” Psalm 66:18-20 (NLT)

A great example of how much the Lord loves you is found in the Psalms of King David. David was raw and honest in his conversations with God. The Psalms shares David’s laments, requests, and praises. David trusted God and looked to the Lord in all situations. We often read about David’s prayers for being rescued, for peace and for guidance. David bared his soul with God and God answered.

I want to encourage you to be like David in your prayer life and by continually seeking God.

Sing praises to the Lord! Dance, cry, and rest in the Lord. Never feel like you need to be in a hurry when spending time with the Lord. Remember the Lord is listening. He does not ignore you. He loves you so much and has great plans for you. He wants to share His thoughts with you.

Jesus and Our Mess

Jesus is always working in and through flawed and messy human beings, He has no other options, this is what He has available to Him. In our humanity it is inevitable that we will fall short and make mistakes. God is not surprised by this, but for some reason we are.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:23-24 (CSB)

We can breathe easier in the light of this wonderful truth, that through Jesus and the undeserved redemption He offers to us, we are justified. This is freely available by His grace and mercy.

This is something to meditate on in quiet moments, when all we can think about is how we have failed or how we have so far to go in Christ-like maturity. Journeying faithfully with our Saviour is more like long distance running than a short and impressive sprint. We get tired, we worry we’ll faint and not make it to the finish line, we may contemplate giving up altogether- yet we know it is worth it, we know He is not only running alongside us but ahead of us and within us by His Holy Spirit.

When we have trusted in Christ for salvation and have committed to following Him, we are blessed. Flawed and messy as we are, we cannot escape the thread woven throughout the scriptures and reiterated in the Cross that we are chosen, protected, and favoured by God. Not because of our innate beauty but because He has decided to set His love upon us and draw us to Himself.

Where do we get the idea that we come to Christ messy but then He cleans us up and sends us out to reach other messy people? Does He say to you “You’re okay now, all your problems and issues are resolved- now go and spread the good news?” . No, of course not. We know this deep down, yet need to be constantly reminded of our propensity to sin and our ever present need of abiding in the vine. Yes, you grow in grace and maturity. Yes, there is fruit to bear as an overflow of your redemption. But you never outgrow your desperate need for Jesus.

“Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.” John 15:4-5 (CSB)

What an honour we have been given to be involved in the work of God’s kingdom. The kingdom of right living and thinking, peace and unmeasurable joy in the Holy Spirit. He has chosen the weak to shame the strong, the foolish to shame those who think they are wise in the world.

Cast Down And Lonely But Not Forgotten

What do we do when loneliness settles in?

Early in the morning, I woke up with a heavy burden on my heart. On the carpet, bent over, eyes stinging, I confessed my jealousy toward a girlfriend’s success. Why did I feel so alone? “Please, God, search my heart. Pull out these painful roots of bitterness and shame.”

I know God finishes what He begins and is responsible for my increase. And that my job is to show up every day and do my best. But how can I do this if my heart is bitter and lonely?

Believing we are forgotten makes it easy for sin to take root. We may feel left out, unqualified, or abandoned as envy and resentment set in. This leads to loneliness from a loved one, and our transgressions create separation from God, causing spiritual loneliness.

Loneliness can take our breath away, and we feel trapped and forgotten.

While reading Psalm 42, I began understanding my condition and what God was teaching me. In Psalm 42:11, David pleads, “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God” (Psalm 42:11 ESV).

David doesn’t stay in his pit of despair, nor should we. Instead, he moves forward with hope.

Even when all seems hopeless, there is hope because God is on the throne. He’s in control and is going to deliver. Then David shifts to praising God for His faithfulness and salvation. God has been faithful to past saints and all generations of His beloved.

We may be cast down and lonely, but God hasn’t forgotten us. In fact, we are engraved on the palms of His hands (Isaiah 49:15:16).

We break free of loneliness by running to our Father, repenting our sins, searching our hearts, and praising and glorifying Him.

What will you do when you are downhearted by unconfessed sin, troubling circumstances, or an unmet prayer or expectation? Will you imprison yourself in self-pity and loneliness or grasp God’s hand?

Here are three steps inspired by Psalm 46:11 to practice when we are feeling cast down, forgotten, or lonely:

13/06/2023

For years, my husband and I served at a residential treatment facility. We lived 24/7 with teenagers who had been pulled out of foster homes for their extreme behavior or were transitioning out of juvenile detention. Our job was to provide a safe space, model a secure relationship with each other, and give them a picture of what family could look like. We thrived on routine, family meals around the table, and lots of one-on-one talks.

Many of these kids came from homes of abuse, neglect, drugs, and violence. We spoke of Jesus and His love for them. We did our best to live it more than we preached it. One week, on the whiteboard that hung in the main space of the house, I wrote the following verse: “I will not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands. Always in my mind is a picture of Jerusalem’s walls in ruin.” Isaiah 49:15b-16 (NLT)

One of the girls living with us at the time latched onto those words. She was 16, but for over half her life she had been homeless, living in a car with her mom and 3 siblings. The other part of her life had been in foster homes and then, when her behaviors increased, juvenile detention.

She had heard about Jesus from her grandmother years ago but couldn’t believe that He would have anything to do with her at this point in her life. Between the circumstances that happened to her and the consequences that she created for herself, she felt forgotten - and certainly not deserving - of God’s love.

Knowing the context behind Isaiah 49 can explain why those verses spoke to her heart - and maybe speak to your tattered heart as well.

The walls of Jerusalem had been lying in ruin for over 70 years. Most of the Israelites were in a far-away place, in exile in a strange land. The decades of waiting in exile had to feel long, difficult, and uncomfortable. The Israelite people were forced to live among a different culture and mindset. Like a square peg in a round hole - they didn’t fit. They may have even thought that God had forgotten about them - like He had put them in a time-out and then left.

But during that time of exile God’s children were being refined. After they finally returned to Jerusalem and rebuilt the city, they did not go back to idol worship like they had for centuries before.
Not Forgotten

Their struggle during exile drew them closer to God and their desire was only for Him.

When Nehemiah was able to set to work with his skeleton crew to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, they were able to accomplish an amazing feat - reconstructing the entire wall around the city in 52 days.

But, during that 52-day restoration Nehemiah faced opposition of all kinds: ridicule, anger, discouragement, fear, internal strife, laziness, and threats.

A Heavenly Home Security System

I walked into the empty front room of our new house, the slap from my sandals echoing down the hallway. Sunlight filtering through the window blinds created an eye-catching pattern on the tile floor, compelling me to sit in its warmth. As I began to daydream about decorating, a tingle of anticipation skipped up my spine, a sign I often recognize before the Holy Spirit speaks to me.

“Build your house on Me and I will protect it,” I sensed Him say. I smiled at His creative description as He whispered, “Let me show you how to activate a heavenly home security system.”

That day, the Spirit introduced me to the concept of a prayer walk, a powerful weapon in the fight to protect my home and family against the schemes of the enemy. He led me through each room, inviting me to pray for God’s protection.

As my fingertips traced the walls, I prayed His strong arms would hold them up amidst torrents of wind and rain. I hovered near each window, asking God to bind the enemy from slipping in and wreaking havoc. As I walked the floors, I prayed for the strength to make Jesus the solid foundation upon which I would create this new home. I also asked God to bless the activity under its roof. I stood in each doorway and asked Jesus to help my family members keep the door to their hearts open. In my son’s bedroom, I prayed he would find godly friends, and fulfill the purpose for his life. As I gazed around the master bedroom, I asked God to fan the flame of passion in my marriage.

As I took this first prayer walk, I sensed God activating His heavenly home security system. The experience was so profound I’ve made it a regular practice! I also use my daily homemaking tasks as additional opportunities to cover my home in prayer. When I toss a bill on the office desk, I pray for my husband’s business pursuits and a willingness for us to be financially generous. As I’m folding socks in the laundry room, I pray that my family never forgets the blessings we’ve received. When I scrub the dinner dishes, I pray for more occasions to extend hospitality from my kitchen.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO PRAY OVER OUR HOME?

I believe that covering our homes in prayer is an integral part of protecting them against the prevailing evil in our world today. When we pray over our home, we seal in the peace of God and block out the world’s chaos. Outside those four walls, “your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1Peter 5:8 ESV).

We must be intentional about protecting our home and family. Sure, we can invest in high-tech security cameras and install extra deadbolts on our doors, but those man-made measures only go so far. The war we fight daily is against “the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places”

(Ephesians 6:12 ESV).

Make no mistake that the devil is hell-bent on destroying our places of refuge. Here are a few practical ways to ensure your home is protected:

Doubts are like Weeds

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” Gen 3:1 (NIV).

The wind can be fierce where I live, on the wide-open prairies, with barely any trees to slow its momentum. Things not tightly secured can end up in a neighbor’s field, roof shingles can be missing, and tree branches can be scattered throughout the yard. With this wind, it’s not uncommon to see the iconic tumblew**d rolling across roads and prairies in its lonesome, desolate journey. What you may not know about this wheel of w**d is that as it treks across the prairie, it is seeding its tens of thousands of little seeds as it goes!

Deception is like a tumblew**d leaving its tiny seeds of doubt to grow in unsuspecting soil. It is subtle in its calculated approach, a sleight of hand here and a soft white lie there, but for all its subtly, it has the power to change the course of one’s life! It is the most ancient and evil scheme used by the enemy of our souls to create division among people and division between God and us. It was the misleading line the serpent fed Eve in the garden of Eden at the beginning of time when he hissed, “Did God really say…?” This deception and subsequent surrender into the valley of doubt broke the initial relationship between God and man.

We still hear this line whispered in our ears daily. The deceiver attempts to sprinkle doubt in our minds about God. He is crafty, for sure, twisting words to manipulate and confuse, using slight variants to truth, causing doubt to take hold.

Once the seed of doubt has been planted into our minds, the green shoots of mistrust and fear push through and, if left unchecked, can grow into a rambling overgrowth of unbelief.

What are some garden variety doubts that we need to uproot like noxious w**ds? If we allow these common doubts to germinate in our hearts, we soon find ourselves with a crop of trust issues. We struggle to take God at his word; we question His character and begin to think that maybe we know better than He does.

1. Did God really say….?

Deception tells me that my desires are more valid than God’s instruction. It turns His commands into suggestions and leaves me with a wide berth of gray in which I can choose what feels right to me. Did God really say?

2. Does God really care…?

When I can’t understand God’s ways, and it feels like He is millions of miles away in apparent silence, I begin to doubt that He sees my pain or hears my prayers. A loving God wouldn’t let His children suffer, would He?

3. Is Jesus really the only way…?

The deceiver plants seeds of doubt about the validity of the Jesus I know. What if He isn’t the Son of God as He claimed? What if I’m wrong, and there are more ways to God? Must it truly be this narrow of a path?

Take A Stand

“Then Elijah approached all the people and said, ‘How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him. But if Baal, follow him.’ But the people didn’t answer him a word.” 1 Kings 18:21 (CSB)

Elijah is one of my favorite Old Testament prophets for many reasons. One of the most significant reasons is his ability to stand before King Ahab and share what God has instructed him to say and do concerning a coming drought.

I’m sure King Ahab is thinking, “Who does this guy think he is talking to me in such a manner?

Who has given him the authority to tell me a severe drought is coming where there will be neither dew nor rain for the next few years except at his word?” 1 Kings 17:1

God gave Elijah the authority. God gave Elijah the words to say to King Ahab. “As the Lord, God of Israel, lives, whom I serve.” 1 Kings 17:1 (NIV) gave Elijah the words and the strength to deliver this message.

This is only the beginning of a three-year journey for Elijah. Elijah will be experiencing the drought just as King Ahab and the children of Israel will be experiencing.

Exit Elijah from Samaria. During this three-year period Elijah will be depending on the Lord to provide for him. Elijah will depend on the ravens to bring him food and water. Ravens are scroungers. They are unreliable, dirty, considered to be unclean and detestable creatures to the Jewish people.

The drought continues and is felt all around the area. Famine is also hitting the residents of the area as well. The Lord tells Elijah a poor widow in Zarephath has been directed to take care of him.

Elijah finds this poor widow at the city gates picking up sticks to build a fire. At this point, Elijah asks this dear poor lady to please make him some bread and bring him some water. I’m sure this poor lady looked at Elijah as if he were quite insane. She proceeds to tell Elijah she has only enough flour and oil to make one more meal. Once this has been eaten, she and her son will die.1 Kings 17:12.

The trusting and confident Elijah assures the widow all will be well. “This is what the Lord, God of Israel says.” 1 Kings 17:14 (NIV)

Elijah was not confident in himself. He was confident in the Lord, God of Israel. After all, the Lord had provided food and water for him through the ravens. He had given Elijah the strength and courage to face King Ahab. The Lord had chosen this lady to take care of him as well. No problem.

Elijah’s biggest task is yet to come.

Out of the Few

I remember a time when I didn’t understand why God placed me in a certain situation. I caught myself thinking, “But God, these people don’t like you. They don’t know you. They don’t believe in you.” I let out a sigh of frustration and He quickly spoke to my spirit, “And what better place for you to be?”

Sometimes, it’s difficult and frustrating to be somewhere where you feel like you’re wasting your time, talent, or life in general. I could list so many excuses of why I wasn’t the perfect person to minister to those I worked with or passed by in my daily routine. I could explain all of my failures, faults, and poor judgment calls, all of which as they say, “a mile long,” but God chose me. He sought me out and arranged a divine appointment for me to be in the precise spot at the specific time. The whole chapter was a call-one for me to minister to others, and to be a “daily disciple of Christ.” I wasn’t there to be perfect. I wasn’t there to promote myself or gloat. I was there to make their lives better, even if only for a season.

God has gifted each Christian with gifts and talents to enable us to share the Gospel. Some sing, others preach, I know some who are “administration superstars,” and many write. Whatever your gifts may be, utilize them for His glory. Let others see Him through your actions. As William J. Toms once stated, “Be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible some person ever reads.”

Be mindful that some will never accept Christ. Some will never accept you but keep pushing.

Keep trying. Don’t lose hope that maybe one, or “those two” will come to know God because of you. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll reach thousands, millions?

When you find yourself struggling with God asking why and what you should do, consider these questions:

Have you taken time to pray for those around you? (James 5:16)

Have you been the kind and loving person you’re supposed to be? (John 13:35)

Have you mentioned or spoken the Gospel? (Mark 16:15)

Finding Effectiveness in Changing Seasons

Are you in a season of change?

This past month I learned a new word, liminality.

It is the state of transition between one stage of life and the next. According to the word’s definition, it can cause confusion and loss of belonging. I am in a current state of liminality. A transition in which God has called me to move. As I grieve my old responsibilities, I am processing and researching my next.

However, in my research to be ready for the next stage of life, I have become disappointed and discouraged. Part of who I am is to be a “fixer” and when God says, “enough” or “go” I do it out of obedience.

Then I pray - But, “Why Lord, if you are pulling me to act, my next steps have not become visible?”

The answer is simple, after being slapped in the face with scripture. Faith!! In every step, from “go” to “it is time”, we must follow Christ’s lead and not our own. I know this; you know this!

But we need God to remind us of His perfect plans for our lives.

In times of uncertainty, the comfort we can control is found in our small achievements.

This is why I turned to researching my next best steps. Just taking the time to look things up made me feel as if I had a hand in preparing what was yet to come. Maybe for you, it looks like creating a pro/con list or keeping your schedule full to avoid what lies ahead.

Here is what I know for sure. God created us for a purpose in Him. And when we place ourselves in the middle of His process, we cause a disruption. Glorifying God in all things means we must trust Him. Intervening to “help” God along proves to Him we have a lot more to learn.

A profound revelation!

You Were Made For Her

I love when God brings me an epiphany. This time it happened with one of my close friends who loves the Lord.

She is also in my industry, and whenever we find ourselves together, we gather on our breaks to talk about what God is doing in our lives.

One day, we revisited a story from some years back when we were on the same job, and severe spiritual warfare was happening. Together we prayed that day. And although we had to walk through painful trials after that, we discussed how our stories can help each other.

And then the epiphany hit. Our story is for her.

Because what we go through now is also for the woman in the future to help her. I am drawn to stories about how someone persevered through tragedy with God’s deliverance. I love when they share how God delivered them and how He can do it for me.

You were made for her. The woman who will walk through the fire as you did. Her heart, like yours, will be broken by betrayal. The hurt will wound her spirit. Perhaps days of doubt, isolation, and fear will almost drown her.

I reflected on this and saw how God had recently done this. At that same job where my friend and I prayed, my husband and I would experience a work betrayal that ended in a job loss. Then recently, a co-worker confided in us that she had just gone through the same experience. We came alongside to counsel and comfort her. She trusted us because she knew us before the incident, during it, and afterward. Our survival and coming out on top gave her hope in her dark period. We pointed to our Rescuer and Deliver, Jesus Christ, who, without Him, we would not have survived.

What was meant to harm us, God uses for good. We see this demonstrated in Genesis 50:20 when Joseph comforts his brothers.

“But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.”; Genesis 50:20 (KKJV)

Joseph told his brothers that they meant to harm, but at the same time, he showed them that God would use it for good – to save His remnant.
