Mizoram boasts a huge diversity of reptiles and amphibians. Included in that diversity are the forest or garden lizards (Calotes spp). This year, we're excited to initiate research into their habitat use and interactions with predators.

Here's an individual Emma Gray's forest lizard (Calotes emma) on its sleeping perch (momentarily and rather unhappily disturbed) whilst we collected preliminary data for this project.

More on this soon and don't forget to get in touch if you would like to join us for a unique expedition in India whilst getting involved first hand with our research!

Our 2024 India expeditions are nearing! Here's Boiga quincunciata from last year's expedition to Mizoram, Northeast India. Is there a more stunning Boiga species out there?! This small species is is one of a number of cat eyed snakes that we will likely come across this year.

Keep and eye on our upcoming posts from the field and make sure to get in touch if you are interested in joining us!

▪️ Irawadi forest lizard (Calotes irawadi) | Mizoram, Northeast India | 2023 ▪️

A species often confused with its close relative, the oriental garden lizard (Calotes versicolor). The Irawadi forest lizard is larger and generally found at higher elevations in the northeastern regions of India.

This species, similarly to many smaller lizards, will sleep on thin branches, stems and vines at night. By doing so it allows them to quickly wake up in the presence of a predator, such as a snake as their perch will suddenly begin to move. When this happens, they will quickly dive onto the floor and flee.

This species along with one other, will play a large role in one of our studies which begins next year. If you would like to get more hands on experience with scientific research, make sure to keep an eye out for places on our upcoming 2024 expeditions, which will be opening very soon!

▪️ White lipped flying frog (Zhangixalus smaragdinus) | Mizoram, Northeast India | 2023 ▪️

We have come across this species a handful of times on our Mizoram Monsoons Expedition and it doesn't get any less impressive each time we find one. At first glance, you would think this species is far too bulky and large for gliding down from the canopy. However, their large feet, with webbing between each toe allows them to achieve just this.

This individual was found sitting out on the road during the first evening of our Mizoram Expedition, earlier this year, most likely making it's way in search of a mate after the monsoon rains had finally arrived.

For anyone interested in amphibians, our Mizoram and Western Ghats expeditions will be opening up very soon!

▪️ Russell's viper (Daboia russelii) | Bangalore, south India | 2023 ▪️

How stunning is this juvenile Russell's viper?! At this size, they generally have this highly contrasting pattern which can make them incredibly difficult to spot on earth substrates, particularly when there's a lot of leaf litter around.

This individual was relocated a very short distance by Sourish, after being found by locals within an area of human habitation within the city limits of Bangalore. It's quite remarkable that they manage to survive in densely occupied cities, however, sadly this often results in human-snake conflict in the form of snakebite.

This was a very welcome encounter just before we flew out for our 2023 Mizoram Monsoons Expedition. Keep a close eye on upcoming posts as we prepare to release our 2024 dates!

👀 What lurks in the shadows? 👀

🦎 We found a few of these unique lizards during our night surveys on our Easter Expedition to Morocco, earlier this year. Can anyone guess what species it is? 🦎

✈️✈️✈️ We'll be heading back out to Morocco, next year and announcing all of our 2024 expeditions over the next couple of months. Keep your eyes peeled for the most affordable, educational and hands on herping expeditions out there! ✈️✈️✈️

▫️A fairly common species at one of the sites we will visit during our expedition this year, we usually find them foraging along roads and in shallow vegetation.

▫️Be it feeding, breeding or intraspecific interactions, we are interested in your submissions!

▫️Observational/natural history notes along with short experimental papers involving both captive and wild herps are just some of the papers that C&FH publishes. Get in touch with us today if you have any questions.

▫️Here you can see a young monocled cobra (Naja kaouthia) devouring a toad which we were lucky enough to witness during our time in West Bengal in 2022.

Another interesting and variable colubrid from our Mizoram expedition last year. Pareas monticola, the montane slug eating snake.

This genus has evolved to prey upon slugs and snails and has specifically adapted dentition to do so.

There’s still plenty of colubrids to add to our species list when we visit this year. If you’re interested in joining our expedition, visit our website and get in touch today!

If you want to witness colour polymorphism, look no further than mock vipers (Psammodynastes pulverulentus). These little colubrids come in a wide array of colours, just take a look at these two from our 2022 Mizoram Expedition.

They get even more interesting than that by mimicking vipers and can even change the shape of their pupil from round to a vertical slit!

Let’s see which ones we find this year. Want to join us? We still have limited spaces on our Mizoram expedition! Check out our website, email us at [email protected] or drop us a dm toda.

▪️Popeia popeiorum & Ovophis monticola, Mizoram 2022

▫️Here’s a couple of our favourite venom extraction photos from our last India expedition. All our our expedition participants were able to get slightly hands on with this process and gain valuable experience in sampling live venomous snakes. Notice how the Ovophis has its fangs outside of the mouth, this occurred prior the venom extraction. If this experience is something that interests you, get in touch about our upcoming 2023 expeditions to Morocco, Turkey and India!

▫️Information can be found at www.captiveandfieldherpetology.com where you’ll find expedition info, stunning galleries and our journal. If you have any interesting observations, submit a observational note or short experimental manuscript today.

▫️You can also drop us an email or dm on any of our social platforms.

We have finally kicked off our India expeditions again and now that we’ve been back for three weeks, it’s finally time to share some photos.

Let’s start them off with a stunning monocled cobra (Naja kaouthia) from West Bengal, one of a few locations where they can actually spit their venom.

We kick started and ended our Mizoram Monsoons expedition in West Bengal which gave everyone the chance to see herpetofauna from two states and from very differing habitats.

April is off to an incredible start!

🐍Firstly, the release of an incredible snakebite awareness film which covers northeast India, one of the most neglected Indian regions when it comes to snakebite. Huge congratulations to . We highly recommend anyone who sees this post to head over to the above pages and watch it. We’ll be adding a link to the website in the coming days as well.

🐍Bookings are now open for our Mizoram Monsoons expedition which will run from 11th-22nd July 2022. Don’t hesitate for too long as spaces are already being filled!

🐍We are, after many a delay about to release the next volume of The Captive & Field Herpetology Journal. We thank all of the authors and reviewers for your patience with this, it’s amazing what unexpected issues the pandemic is able to stir up… You can expect this to be released next week!

As we near the half way point of 2021 (not sure how that went so quickly?!) don’t forget to get your submissions in for The Captive & Field Herpetology Journal.

We are particularly interested in herpetoculture notes, cases of human-snake conflict and novel observations.

We also accept field report submissions, take a look at www.captiveandfieldherpetology.com for info, submission guidelines and previous issues.
