“If Bruce Dickinson wants more cowbell, we should probably give him more cowbell…”

You’ve heard of movies based on books, but what about albums based on books? IRON MAIDEN’s seventh studio album, SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON, released on April 11, 1988, is inspired by Orson Scott Card’s 1987 novel “Seventh Son” and is their first official “keyboard” album, confirming IRON MAIDEN’s progressive metal mastery as one of the finest progressive metal albums of all time.

Get ready to take on an army of “Roided up Roos” who are “boxing the trees” and always remember the following: “there’s no such thing as bad publicity”, “you can’t push a rope” and the odds of 2 different people asking the exact same question within a day or two is not just some “random coincidence”.

Understand why “Steve Harris with distortion” is almost as weird as “Slayer with keyboards”, find out “who’s the outfielder?”, discover the secret code behind “French Toast and Waffle Dust”, and tell all the Trans-Ams and Transformers you know that “I measure from my middle back” before you JOIN US for a dive into “the heart of prog Maiden” with IRON MAIDEN’s progressive metal magnum opus, SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON.

We got a little out of control and went far beyond the “appetizers” section, to the point that there was no “meat” to skip to (in terms of a docket), primarily because we had a lot to talk about: albums ahead of their time, new Olympic competitions, and a whole host of other things (including our potential 9/11 Head-To-Head Death Match teaser…).

Be sure to “have a nice August” and remember that the answer to the question in question can only be “Wet? Or moist?”. Fix yourself a “peanut butter and jelly sandwich” and wash it down with a “Captain Morgan and Dr. Pepper”, discover what it means when “you can’t smell the hauntings”, find out which Slayer song “allegedly” has keyboards on it, prepare for some voicemails that “took home the gold” (including the “longest and girthiest” voicemail we’ve ever received), remember that (there are “seven confidents” and) “it’s fun when you say something wrong” and JOIN US for the 4th installment of JUST TALKIN SH*TTAH!!!

“Do you know how many burps I edit out?”

EXODUS have been blessed with the almost uncanny gift of delivering absolutely devastating opening tracks on every album they’ve ever done.* There’s simply nothing like the “violently articulate” manifestations of Gary Holt’s riff wizardry to fuel the intensity of how blisteringly killer the opener (not to mention, the rest of the album) will be, which is why we’re BUILDING THE PERFECT ALBUM OF KILLER OPENERS to convey the critical importance of “setting the tone”, right out of the gate.

Discover the powerful harmonic wonder of the “Bunkerpoon Barbershop Quartet Trio” and find out which critically notorious component is absolutely essential to ensure the full enjoyment of “The Metal Nerdery Quadraphonic Experience”. Remember that even though the outro reels are often times “a little too prerogative”, generally speaking “it’s easier to just not have an individual, original thought”, because more often than not, “it’s not tight…it’s full”.

Get ready to go fast and have “meat sweats the rest of the day” and be sure to have a “moist August” as we begin our TRANSition to “Rap Nerdery” and finalize the preparations for our upcoming “rebranding & renaming”. Enjoy a limited time “voicemail jingle encore” as well as an encouraging message from a “long time listener, first time caller”, be sure to give that “French baguette fella” a break, and JOIN US as we prepare to “Nerd Out” and indulge in BUILDING THE PERFECT ALBUM OF KILLER OPENERS – EXODUS EDITION.

11/08/2024

1998 was a weird period for metal. Thrash was effectively dead and gone, the hype behind the grunge movement had pretty much fizzled out, and heavy music was just in a weird limbo phase. For an album recorded on a shoestring budget of just a few thousand dollars, the eponymous debut album from GODSMACK has an incredibly tight and aggressive mix, chock full of catchy hooks, heavy riffs, solid grooves, and more ‘YEAHS’ than a duet between Rob Zombie and James Hetfield.

Get ready for “The Era” of the Bunkerpoon Barbershop Trio as we reflect back on the times we were “blessed with a little bit of good poon” and tap into “a whole different level of neuroticism” while on our never-ending teenage quest for vag (because it’s “the number one motive for EVERYTHING!”).

Prepare to experience the virtual reality flashback of a “Faux Blaux” at the mall, crank up the stereo in your “Cadillac Escapade”, get your vasectomies “early and often” to avoid spilling “cinnamon roll frosting on Jane’s Bizkit” and THANK YOU for taking the time to JOIN US for one of our longer Patreon episodes (“in girth AND length!”) as we discuss hidden track CD sorcery from the 90’s, some 80’s movies that did not age well, and the debut album from Lawrence, Massachusetts own GODSMACK.

09/08/2024

Hopefully by now, everyone is familiar with those first three notes from the first Black Sabbath album. During The Middle Ages, this was referred to as DIABOLOUS IN MUSICA (which is Latin, meaning “The Devil In Music”). While also known as “The Devil’s Interval”, or in musical parlance simply as the tritone, SLAYER fans recognize DIABOLOUS IN MUSICA as the band’s 8th album of sonic evilocity and darkness, and the 2nd with Paul Bostaph on the drums.

Even though it was released on June 9, 1998, as the nu-metal era was peaking, DIABOLOUS IN MUSICA is most definitely NOT Slayer’s “nu-metal” album. It still possesses all the sinister signature sounds and the dark, macabre subject matter, but there’s an unusual, experimental quality present on this album which defies definition and is unlike anything found on their previous albums. The overall production quality is much more aggressive and grittier, with the vocal performances utilizing some never-before used darker nuances, ensuring that DIABOLOUS IN MUSICA is an almost gratifyingly uncomfortable listening experience.

It's time to get in touch with “good old ‘What’s His Name?’” and discover the subtle yet hilarious differences between “chickpeas and garbanzo beans”. Find out “where to measure from” to ensure maximum accuracy, go ahead and “tune down your voice”, prepare for the most unsettling outro reel ever, fix yourself a bowl of hummus and JOIN US as we dive into the darkness of “The Devil In Music”, made manifest on SLAYER’s DIABOLOUS IN MUSICA.

25/07/2024

Often in life you have to “strike while the iron is hot” because more often than not, the “First Strike Is Deadly” and not striking may result in lost opportunity and success. And while TESTAMENT were riding the wave of success from their first three albums and the subsequent tours that followed, their fourth album within three and a half years, SOULS OF BLACK, might have been a step too far.

Granted, the October 9, 1990 release of SOULS OF BLACK was a prerequisite for the band’s inclusion on the European leg of the Clash of the Titans tour, and while it’s chock full of riffs, incredible guitar solos, and “eerie harmonies” that are all essential elements of the TESTAMENT sound, overall “the chugs are lacking”, and understandably so, because after 3 albums and 3 tours in less than 3 years’ time, the boys from Berkeley could have used a much-needed break before going back into the studio after such an intensive writing, recording, and touring cycle, back to back to back.

It’s time to indulge in some “debaucracy” as we accidentally included the latest episode of “The Triangle” within this episode (“because everybody’s offended by everything now”). Find out what everybody’s “I can’t get to the radio fast enough to turn it off” song is, discover why “Velma was a little bit hotter than Daphne” (and remember that “you can get a lot for $100”), contact “the help desk of medicine” for some “apple wrapped bacon”, and prepare to understand which song is “the one I’m gonna bang my chick to” when you JOIN US as we dive into the darkness of TESTAMENT’s fourth offering, SOULS OF BLACK.

18/07/2024

1991 was a year unlike any other. KFC changed their name to avoid paying royalties to the “trademarked” commonwealth for which they were named (whereas K-Y Jelly could not be reached for comment), Terminator 2: Judgment Day was blowing up the box office as the number one movie in America, the first ever “world wide web” website was introduced to the world by Tim Berners-Lee, and just 6 days after that, on August 12th, 1991, Coroner’s fourth album (Mental Vortex) AND Metallica’s self-titled fifth album were BOLTH released on the EXACT same day.

It's time to get in the time machine and get ready to start “shooting ropes & painting walls” with our “squeezies” as we reveal the name of the band many have notoriously deemed “the hawk-tuah of metal”, as well as the frontman who resembled “a hot Canadian chick” (back in the day) before touring with Pantera, because we’re going back to a time when high school was everything and the idea of retiring to the swingingest, most syphilis-infested subdivision in The Sunshine State was some abstract, fantastical, utopian concept that stretched far beyond the comprehension of our young, teenage, “brain snagged” minds.

“AwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwMannnnnnn” it’s time to learn the key ingredients of “vampire jerky” and remember that “you can still rock with a high voice” (even if you’ve got on your “gloves of shame”). Find out where you DO NOT want to get “heartworms”, be sure to establish firm boundaries so you’ll know exactly where “the aftermarket stuff stops with the ladies”, prepare to enjoy some “tangy flan” (courtesy of the outro-reel super-mix) and JOIN US as we reflect on all the fantastic metal released on August 12th, 1991 and the other 364 days of that year as we travel back in time to THE YEAR OF OUR RIFF LORD: 1991.

12/07/2024

May 17, 2024, marks the day that KERRY KING released the diabolically brutal debut, FROM HELL I RISE, forging a new chapter in thrash metal. And before you get all “skeptical” about it and start in with some snide remark like “Oh, this is just diet Slayer…”, understand that this is definitely NOT Slayer (although, it kinda is…even though it’s “allegedly” not).

Make no mistake, KERRY KING is not just that bald, tattooed dude from Slayer with some random backup band. In fact, KERRY KING is a legitimate thrash super group with an all-star line-up featuring members of Death Angel, Vio-Lence, and (of course) Slayer. And for a debut solo album, FROM HELL I RISE is an absolute scorcher. In short, “it’s huge and big…it’s bigger than huge”, and if you like Slayer and/or Vio-Lence and/or Death Angel on ANY level, you are really going to enjoy this album.

Time to break out your “Jean-Claude Van Damme banned band bandana” as we unveil what the next Doomsicle cover will be (and who’s gonna “dress up as Peter Criss”). Find out who 100% “allegedly” has a beef with E.T. (and will NOT be phoning home), stay away from that stuff that “beads up” and “starts getting gritty after a few whacks” and JOIN US for a trip into the aggro-thrash inferno of FROM HELL I RISE.

Statement
FORBIDDEN
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Steve Smyth and Forbidden amicably part ways.

Steve:

“Hey everybody, I’ve said this before in my career, but all things do reach their end at some point.
As hard as this is to write this, I’ve decided it’s time to part ways with Forbidden, and return to my band One Machine as priority, along with other projects on the horizon, and of course session work, and teaching music as always.

Forbidden was always a place I considered home, from the very first gig I played with the guys, the Thrash Of The Titans festival, back in 2001, touring across 2009/2010 with Russ and Mark, writing and releasing the Omega Wave album, the touring that followed 2010-2012, and the last year. It’s a home I’ll miss, but the memories will remain.

One Machine is my own home that I’ve built myself, from before, and after my first stint with Forbidden, from 2009-2012.
We are preparing to release a new EP, with touring starting up in September across Europe.

Prior to rejoining Forbidden, I declared my intention to move between Forbidden and One Machine, in between schedules. It now appears those schedules are conflicting.

I’d like to thank YOU the fans for all of your support over the years! I couldn’t do ANY of this without you!

Craig and Matt especially for welcoming me back to Forbidden!
To new additions Chris and Norman, Tim Healy, the crew, every promoter and agent, thank you for making the last year of music and travelling the world happen!
I wish Forbidden all the best for the future, and all it may bring!”

————————————————
Forbidden:

We understand and accept Steve’s decision to walk away for his own personal reasons and to finish what he started with One Machine.

Steve had been by our side creating and playing music from the end of 2008-2012 and for the rebirth in 2023. He contributed much greatness along the way.

We understand his situation better than most people possibly could.

We all wish Steve the very best and success with One Machine. His Baby.

Much love, respect and gratitude for the years Steve spent with Forbidden will always endure.

Thank you, Steve.

Craig, Matt, Norman, Chris & Tim

_______

With Steve Smyth stepping away, Forbidden intends on not missing a beat.

Daniel Mongrain from Voivod will be stepping in for our next batch of European dates upcoming in August.

Daniel is an astonishing & accomplished guitarist. His work in Martyr & Voivod is otherworldly! We are very happy to have him aboard for these dates.

Daniel will be a great addition for the gigs and we must thank the guys in Voivod for letting us borrow him.

See you in Europe soon!

Lastly a few words from Dan Mongrain :

“It’s a great honor for me to join Forbidden this summer in Europe! As a fan from the early days, I’m grateful for the opportunity and will do my best to pay respect to all the amazing talented guitar players
Who played in the band, Glen Alvelais, Tim Calvert (RIP), and Steve Smyth. See you soon!"

Not only is BILLY MILANO a blessing and “a bold, courageous man”, he’s also the mastermind behind M.O.D. (METHOD OF DESTRUCTION), the crossover thrash patriots that emerged following the end of S.O.D. with a similar sense of politically incorrect humor, biting social commentary, and a more hardcore infused thrash sound than S.O.D. May 3, 1988, may just be the biggest, red-letter, landmark date in all of progressive metal, as it marks the release of QUEENSRYCHE’s 3rd studio album OPERATION: MINDCRIME, one of the finest concept albums in all of metal. It’s very much a “Pink Floyd meets heavy metal” style and vibe, and is quite a departure from their two previous albums (The Warning & Rage For Order), with a very “in your face” mix, some power metal overtones, and perhaps the most aggressive bass sound on a metal album EVER, which is weirdly ironic considering that QUEENSRYCHE was the weirdest opening band choice to open for the biggest thrash metal band on the planet (at the time) who had just released an album that, conversely, had the most absent bass sound on a metal album EVER. (Sometimes life is just way too weird…)

Remember that $25 was a small price to pay in 1988 to become “a happy man” even though “only YOU can make YOU happy” (because “you rent ‘em, you don’t buy ‘em”). Prepare to find out the answer to “which would be worse?”, discover where to go for any “gift ideas”, learn the identify of Matt’s doppelganger and hear about Russell’s “Mr. Miyagi moment”, including the resulting “truck trim” prior to making his transition from guitar player to bass player. Remember that “any band who mentions two thrash references on one album can’t be all that bad”, go get yourself a summer “skinjob” and JOIN US as we dive into one of the most world-renowned rock operas in all of metal with OPERATION: MINDCRIME.

Back in 1988, I could usually only afford to buy one at a time anyway, lol!

Not that it matters as far as the media format, but at this time (first half of the year) I was still mainly buying vinyl and cassette tapes. I didn't really start buying CD's till around Sept./Oct.

A neighbor friend let me borrow the IRON MAIDEN (on cassette tape), which was really good, but it would be a few months later, before I bought a copy of it (on cassette as well) for myself.

I did however buy QUEENSRYCHE - Operation: Mindcrime on (cassette tape), as soon as it was released and played it constantly for a good couple of months, thereforafter.

The METALLICA didn't come out till the tail end of the summer, but that too received alot of play in the car cassette deck at the time.

The Van Hagar was a bit "light" for my tastes at the time, and so I didn't even buy that one until 1989 or so.

Going with the QUEENSRYCHE followed closely by the MAIDEN and then the METALLICA!
