ADVERBIALS OF PLACE
NB. Most adverbials of place are prepositional phrases:
We use adverbials of place to describe LOCATION, DIRECTION and DISTANCE.
I) They are in France at present.
Ii) Come and sit next to me.
Iii) But we also use adverbs:
iv) He went abroad
V) She lives abroad
vi) I saw the girl downstairs
Vii) We met the woman who resides nearby
Viii) He works overseas
ix) You need to summon courage and move ahead ahead
X) here xi) next door xii) there xiii) around here
Xiv) away Xv) indoors Xvi) out of doors Xvii) upstairs
We use adverbials of place to describe LOCATION, DIRECTION and DISTANCE.
LOCATION
Utilising the instances under this subheading, We use adverbials to talk about WHERE someone or something is:
a) He was standing by the table.
b) You'll find it in the cupboard.
c) You'll find it inside.
d) Sign your name here – at the bottom of the page.
e) Do not sit there, Stand here.
f) They used to live nearby.
DIRECTION
We use adverbials to talk about the direction in which someone or something is moving:
a) Walk past the bank and keep going to the end of the street.
b) It's difficult to get into the car because the door is so small.
c) They always go abroad for their holidays.
d) He was moving along the road when I met him
DISTANCE
We use adverbials to show how far things are:
a) Central Birmingham is 250 kilometres from London.
b) The hotel you are talking about in London is 250 kilometres away.
c) We shuffled between France and Denmark
d) He ran from pillar to post
