Ik Kil Cenote in the Tinúm Municipality, Yucatán, Mexico.
Cenotes are sinkholes and caves found across the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. When the limestone bedrock collapses it exposes groundwater and creates these beautiful natural features. The word cenote derives from the word “D"zonot” or “Ts"onot”, which basically means hole or cavern filled with water. Cenote is pronounced “seh-no-tay.”
Cenotes were sacred places to the Maya who have lived in this part of the world for thousands of years. They believed cenotes were the entrances to the underworld.
Cenotes are natural wells that supplied the Maya with water. In times of drought some cenotes were the scene of human sacrifices, including Ik Kil. The Maya would sacrifice their victims by throwing them into the water. They believed these sacrifices would appease the rain god, Chaac. Jewellery, pottery and bones have been found in cenotes. In 1566 friar Diego de Landa recorded sacrifices in the Sacred Cenote in Chichen Itza:
"Into this well they have had, and then had, the custom of throwing men alive as a sacrifice to the gods, in times of drought, and they believed that they did not die though they never saw them again. They also threw into it a great many other things, like precious stones and things which they prized. And so, if this country had possessed gold, it would be this well that would have the great part of it."
Cenotes are found all over the Yucatán Peninsula and many of them form a distinct circular formation. This formation of cenotes follows the rim of the Chicxulub crater, which is an impact crater buried beneath the Yucatán Peninsula. The asteroid that created it is believed to have been the one that brought about the extinction of the majority of the dinosaurs over 66 million years ago. . .

One of Germany"s most powerful WWII AA guns was the 12.8 cm FlaK 40. It fired a 60 lb projectile up to a maximum altitude of 48,000 ft. A twin version, shown here, was made in small numbers. They were famously fitted on top of flak towers.

In medieval Britain, most watermills belonged to the lord of the manor. Since he had the monopoly, the lord would charge everyone a fee to grind their own corn. The many monasteries that populated the land also built and owned watermills.
Owning a mill in medieval Britain could make your very wealthy. For some lords or ‘mill barons’, this could have enormous economic value. It is said that the De Veres family who were based in Castle Hedingham, Essex, had a portfolio of 17 mills. Most mills were in existence before the Domesday survey of 1086.

The tower of the 19th-century St Michael"s Church from an alleyway in Stanwix in Carlisle, Cumbria, England. This photo may not seem interesting, but I am standing inside what should be one of the best sites on Hadrian"s Wall—Uxelodunum.
Uxelodunum is better known as Petriana or Stanwix Fort. It was the largest fort on Hadrian"s Wall, but is now completely buried beneath the suburb of Stanwix. There were once some exposed stones in the Cumbria Park Hotel carpark, but so far as I know, they have now been covered.
Uxelodunum"s location approximately midway along the frontier defences (including the Western Sea Defences), as well as its size and large garrison, suggests that it might have served as the headquarters of the frontier defences. Unfortunately, Uxelodunum"s close proximity to the growing city of Carlisle guaranteed that once it was abandoned, its stone was taken for other building projects. Since then, Carlisle has expanded beyond its walls and today, houses and a school occupy the site.
Every time I pass through this part of Stanwix I can"t help but think to myself: the Ala Gallorum Petriana, an elite thousand-strong cavalry unit of the Roman Empire, was here.
