Sleeping Lady Films Waking Giants Productions SLWG is a Native American film/television production company dedicated to bringing positive, inspirational stories from Indian Country to the world.

Sleeping Lady is a majority owned Native American Company based out of Anchorage AK and Santa Fe NM. The name of the company is based on a Dena’ina legend relating to Mount Susitna, located on the west bank of the lower Susitna River near Anchorage. The company was started by well known Native American actor Irene Bedard and Canadian businessman Thomas Denomme in January 2012. The two had met when

Irene guest starred on the cooking, travel and culture show, “Rezervations Not Required” which Thomas had started in Canada and now brought over to SLWG. They shared their beliefs on the state of Native American film and television and found they were surprisingly similar. Not only are Native Americans underrepresented in film and television, (There are two shows now featuring the Amish; Native Americans – none!) most times when they are featured, it denigrates into either negative or stereotypical scenarios. Our goal is to change all that. We have created a slate of both television and film projects that concentrate on the positive aspects of Indian Country. These shows will be of the highest quality bringing together the best people we can find; both Native and non-Native. We plan to inspire and entertain by bringing the best stories we can find to the world. Sleeping Lady is not a charitable organization and is founded on sound business practices. Each project contains its own condensed business plan with budgets and marketing capabilities that tie into the overall business plan for the company. Utilizing film tax credits, branding, sponsorship and product placement, we expect each project to be profitable. We also recognize our responsibility to help build the Native Film industry and have included a training component in all our projects. We want to help mentor the next generation of Native filmmakers at all levels by having them work with our people, again both Native and non-Native. We also want to work with Tribes that want to share their stories with the world, and train their people at the same time.

Just to elaborate, I am very pleased with the film "The Revenant," in both the respectful manner in which they portrayed Native American culture and in the beautiful manner in which the film was shot.

I am also very pleased with the work done by Leonardo DiCaprio in his work with the Indigenous Peoples of the World, his work with the UN and in his work on behalf of Mother Earth.

And although I would like to encourage the same respectful treatment from Hollywood in respect to Indigenous People, it is ultimately up to us as Native American producers to tell our stories our way, and to do so in a professional, positive and entertaining manner that will encourage the whole world to watch.

Native American advocates say "The Revenant" is a watershed for minorities in film, but is ignored amid the Hollywood diversity debate.

Important Update on ``Songs My Brother Taught Me``

Important Update on ``Songs My Brother Taught Me``

*IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT*

Hello our wonderful Facebook family! It's almost been a year since "Songs" premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January, we had such an awesome year, traveling the world from Cannes to Mumbai and going home to South Dakota and to Pine Ridge! Our Johnny and Jashaun both won acting awards, we had a great theatrical release in France and we are now Spirit Awards nominees!

It's been such a great year, but unfortunately we were not able to find a distributor in America. For those of you who aren't familiar with film distribution. Traditionally, a film is bought by a distributor and the distributor spend money and book the film into theaters and keep the tickets sale in return. Our film is perhaps too much of a financial risk.

We were very heartbroken because one of the biggest reasons for our team to make this film is for Native communities, especially the youth, to walk into a movie theater and see their faces and their stories on the big screen. We were also inspired by so many successful DIY distributions in recent years, so instead of just letting it go, we decided to distribute this film ourselves!
We've been working hard for the past few month and it's HAPPENING!

We are SO EXCITED to announce that "Songs" will be release theatrically on March 2nd, 2016!

We have been booked at many wonderful theaters and we will be announcing the full line-up in February 2016. But for now, we are excited to share with you that we will be starting our journey with a two-week run at NYC's Film Forum! We have been a big fun of Film Forum for years. It's such a honor to be able to show our film there! "Songs" hasn't been screened in New York City yet and it's our second home! So our New York friends, we will see you in March!

We also have a new website: http://songsthemovie.com

On the website, you can request screenings at your city, book our film and watch trailers and clips! If there is a local theater or school you think may want to show our film for March, April and May 2016, please visit our website or leave us a private message here.
We have a fiscal sponsorship that would allow us to receive tax deductible donations from individuals and gifts from foundations. If you want to support our DIY distribution, and write off some taxes for 2015 smile emoticon, your donation will help us to hire marketing support and cover essentials like ads, poster printing and shipping! Again, you can do so by visiting our new website: http://songsthemovie.com

For y'all who are waiting for the DVDs and wanting to watch it online - both will be available Summer 2016!

We are excited to embark on this journey and we can't wait to meet y'all at your local theaters this spring!

Thank you and happy holidays!

Team "Songs"

To all Veterans; Thank you for your service!

On this Memorial Day, as we remember those who have given their lives in service to our country while protecting the freedoms and ideals we hold dear, many of our fellow Americans remain unaware of the major contributions Native Americans have made to our nation's armed forces.
