It's Midsummer's Day and the start of my presentation at the Walsall Creative Factory in the Butts. The talk ranged from regal roots, my anarchist cousin, the music hall song "I'm my own grandpa", a near death by drowning at the Arboretum Lake, and photos taken by my dad of the local area in the '50s and '60s. Many of these incidents lay the foundations for the tales told in my memoirs.

Poster produced by Alison Maxam for upcoming events at the Walsall Creative Factory.
My original title for the talk was But(t)Seriously, but perhaps that was a bit too cheeky. 😇

My artist friend Peter Lawrence sent me his "colouring book" for my 70th birthday, together with a blue crayon. Here is what I've come up with (aided by CorelDraw).

On Wednesday, I needed to visit the Creative Factory in the Butts, Walsall to drop off more copies of my books (they were running low on supplies!).
As they are really into their crafts, I thought I'd give them a few badges I made, the image of which is shown.

I presented my talk to the Wetherby U3A Family History Group on Friday morning.
Titled "Memoirs - Why? What? How?" it aimed at encouraging the folk gathered to produce their own memoirs by showing them that this can be done in many formats besides the written word.
Apparently my efforts were much appreciated because Jeff, the leader of the group, later emailed "...everyone really enjoyed Phil's talk, he is a natural speaker who holds the audience's attention. Brilliant!!!!"
At this rate I might need to loosen the band on my Tilley hat

On Friday morning I am giving a presentation to the Wetherby U3A Family History Group on the subject "Memoirs -Why? What? How?"
During this meeting I hope to encourage members to think about recording their own memories, whether through photographs, family discussions, video, memory boxes, or writing.

Quotes from readers:

“If it was necessary to sum up such a huge amount of work in one word, that word would be - Enjoyable.”

“A compelling read - it's wonderfully written, and reminds me so much of my own growing up in Birmingham. Well done Phil - I am just beginning volume 2 and can't put it down....
And I forgot to say - there was lots of chuckling through volume 1....”

“I found your style easy and flowing and loved that it was chronological. So often these days books are written without regard for the order of occurrence and this leaves me confused and annoyed.
It was very interesting and satisfying to read I do hope others get as much pleasure from it as I did.”

“..what a treat…… began the butterfly book yesterday – everything I've come across so far – just first chapter is just brilliant and so well conceived and thoughtful – trust you are pleased with it
Packaging, covers, artwork, weight of covers and paper, font, symbols, music titles and am sure there is more to discover. Love the details of the houses and so much like my grandparents' place…..”

“Most enjoyable, and I'm in awe as to how much you can remember from so long ago!”

“I think that it will be evident how much we are both enjoying reading your books by the rate of progress that we have made. You write in a manner that is easily readable…”

“Our enjoyment of your books is partly due to the fact that they are well written, and partly due to the fact that they are a social history of our time.”

“The dementia section certainly brought back all the confusing/grim/funny events that marked my own dad's decline, and then my mum's.”

“I am wondering if you, Phil, kept a diary? How on earth you are able to recall in such detail ….”

“Thank you so much for sending us a copy of Phil's autobiography. It was really interesting…”

“Phil's book is a very readable life-story and a record of our times with some very perceptive observations throughout...”
