Feeling like a child:

Whenever I get new gear it is hard to take me back not instantly open the box as soon as I come home😃

It starts with the pickup at the post office or the moment the parcel service rings at the door. That exciting feeling like you had as a child on christmas eve😍
And back home you can‘t wait to unbox an try your new belongings.

I‘m sure each of us has those moments that cause a time travel and let us feel as a child.
And I think that is magnificent🥰

The art of eye contact - Not just a symbol of a match of two persons in everyday life😉

Even as a sound guy on live jobs I do have to follow the speakers on stage to know who‘s going to speak. So I would instantly raise the fader of their microphone and everyone in the room and in the stream can hear the actual speaker.

Well more than 10 years ago a brilliant Sound Engineer came up with an automated solution for digital mixers that can often help out with those presentations and talks on stages.

But I still believe in the vintage etiquette of holding eye contact though I am actually the only one who takes a look😜

Sound Design in the studio of 😊

The last project was one of them where I only get a Video Mixdown and from this it is my turn to make the visible component alive.

That‘s really the work I like the most. It gives the possibility to me to be creative. And the only think that limits my creativity is an missing sound in my sound library.
Remarkable because the library contains hundred thousands of files🙈

One might think I‘m a lover of a labelling machine😁But actually, what I really do like is organization.

It helps to save time on a job when you need to find something quickly.
And you always have survey of what you do have in your kit.

To be honest, you could call my smaller case the opposite and I think that is understated.
I call it the „case of shame“ because it‘s just a box where everything is stuffed into it.

And when I do have to find something quickly that case is a mess.
But changes will come and for now I did a little update for the bigger case.

I labelled the lavalier microphones cases with two colors so everytime I would open my case I instantly can see which case is empty and which case still includes a lavalier microphone😊

Sometimes when weather interrupts plans it turns out in something beautiful.

I think director and DoP gave a nice visional touch to the improvised set.

Always backed up from production manager from 😇

What a nice setup in cooperation with the Camera Department DoP and 2nd AC for a 15m dolly shot where I thought let’s add the stereo microphones to the camera perspective.

The Mixer Board was secured to the bazooka of the dolly.

A boom pole (not visible in this picture) gave the action of two basketball players for the closer signal and fittet the stereo sounds.

The why?

When sounds in stereo needs to fit to Camera perspective because camera is panning or moving like in this shot the stereo microphones for the sound effects need to do the same movement.
Otherwise you would hear the sound in another direction than you would see it in real.

In this scenario it worked fine because the action of the players was loud. But for quieter scenes the fans of Camera Expandables would be to loud for my cardiod microphones.

But I was happy to have this setup in this scene😊

About the last project…Team work is such an important point for a good flow on set.
It was a pleasure to have .sound with me on the film of .

For us it was the first project we met each other in the Sound Department. So the first days went out in finding the right way of communication between us and other members on set such as Costume Department ( 🙏🏻), Cast, Camera Department ( 🙏🏻) Lighting Department and finally of course the Director .

Can‘t tell you how many times I had to interrupt Takes or tell ._.th that this Take was not good for sound😁🙏🏻

But in the end only the good quality of dialogue recording counts and that‘s my aim🤗

The last set for interviews let me think about maybe „The thing“ in our world as Sound Mixers on sets.

The signal to noise ratio (SNR) is probably the everyday struggle we have to handle.
In my scenario I had a wide office and a ventilation system that wasn‘t possible to shut down.
The smaller problems for noise levels like coffee machines and a fridge for milk were nothing compared to the ventilation.

Though I could install walls of molton to get the Noise Level a bit under control (let it be 3dB plus a loss in the higher frequencies of the noise), it was still hearable.

So in terms of the signal to noise ratio (SNR) there was the chance to let the interviewee speak as loud as possible without feeling uncomfortable or sounding unnatural.

So if the dialog level would win 2-3dB just by speaking a little bit louder the distance to the noise level (ventilation) would be greater.

That‘s a win. But here comes the next problem of the SNR.

Letting the interviewee speak a little bit louder in a big room that has a reverberation due to the acoustic of that wide office, the echoe of the dialogue with 1 to 2 seconds delay will come back of walls an other reflective materials and could be hearable.
A problem that wouldn‘t be given if the Interviewee would speak 3dB quieter.

So the right balance between speaking loud enough to predominate the Ventilation System and quiet enough to not enforce the echoes of the reflective walls was my task😁

I would be a liar if I would tell that I found allways that sweetspot of the SNR but I got a nice sound with my boom mic and a - in my opinion - controllable noise level that can be edit in Post Production.

How do you handle these situations where there is supposedly no way to shut down the ventilation system.
In the last months I had more often this problem of a central controlled ventilation system that would only work for the entire building and not for separate rooms or one floor.

What do you think about it?

Me and my wireless boom. Probably the best tool I afforded in the last years.

Why?

By the time our jobs on locations required a vast efficiency in time so if I need to do any changes unplugging my boom or getting rid of boom and mixer together costs that time producers want to use for creating content.

And of course it is our job to support the content production in our best ways.

Besides to be honest, it is really relieving to leave the boom in a short break on my sound cart instead of having it all the time in my hands😁

So all in all for me it is the nicest tool in my kit😇

The last days I was responsable for the sound recordings and personal monitoring for three rooms at once where the cast had a nice talk.

There where a few cables to manage in the entire house and my workplace was CHAOS😅

2 weeks ago we‘ve been at the headquarter of to have a few talks.
Because of the dimension of the inside courtyard we prepared to hang up molleton to avoid background noise from the people that are arriving, chat with other colleagues or just walk through the hall.

The next step was choice of microphones. So I decided to go with cardiod headset microphones that would also help to control the background noise extremely.

All in all it was a nice setting and in the end there were only a few colleagues in the entire building😅
But we wanted to be safe, so yeah🤷🏻‍♂️😁
