✍️ In this episode, Maddie sits down with Catherine Armour, a passionate eating disorder advocate and researcher, to discuss the critical failures of the public health system in treating eating disorders. Catherine shares her personal journey through the broken system, the shocking inadequacies in care, and her research aimed at improving treatment.

📢 Access to care is more or less abysmal, with only 10% of those with eating disorders receiving any help, and the horrifying reality of waiting years for inpatient treatment. Catherine’s research reveals the dire need for interim support, individualized care, and a complete overhaul of the system to better address the needs of those suffering.

Key Topics:

- Catherine’s personal eating disorder journey and treatment experience
- The systemic failures in public eating disorder care
- The critical need for interim support and individualized treatment
- Catherine’s research findings and actionable recommendations

Strap in, friends. This episode has some hard-hitting topics, so you've been warned.

Maddie and Lakshmi urgently discuss Canada's alarming decision to allow Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) for those with mental illness, including anorexia. They take a no-holds-barred look at the foolishness of conflating eating disorders with terminal illnesses, spotlighting a policy that tragically misunderstands anorexia's true nature.

With a mix of raw personal stories and sharp professional insights, they shred the fabric of this policy, illuminating its ethical nightmares and the potential for devastating outcomes. This is a wake-up call, urging a drastic pivot from death-centric solutions to life-affirming recovery strategies.

It's a hard-hitting conversation that demands action, champions hope, and celebrates the power of change.

Maddie is leaving for Florence, her first overseas trip since pre-covid, and since being in strong recovery. She reflects on the last time she travelled while in recovery - a time that sent her backwards into relapse - with a fresh perspective on an old journal entry.

It may seem counterintuitive to travel and refuse to indulge in new foods and a little travel weight fluctuation, but for someone with an eating disorder, the disorder itself is home away from home.

Yoga nearly killed me, then saved my life.

Maddie sits down with Chelsea Roff, a certified yoga therapist and eating disorder survivor, to discuss the intersection of yoga and healing from disordered eating. Chelsea shares her personal journey and how yoga helped her to reclaim her body and mind, and how she now uses her experience to help others on their own healing path. This is a powerful conversation about using yoga as a tool for self-care and body acceptance, and the importance of honesty about the darker side of yoga as a rabbit hole for disordered behaviours.

Chelsea Roff is the Founder and Director of Eat Breathe Thrive. A yoga therapist, researcher, and educator, she has spent nearly a decade pioneering integrative health programs for people with mental health challenges.

In 2011, Roff offered the first Yoga for Eating Disorders program to clients at a treatment center where she had once been treated for anorexia. This later became the heart of Eat Breathe Thrive: a seven-week program that combines yoga, meditation, and psychoeducation to help people recover from eating disorders. Two years later, she raised $50,000 in fifty days to kickstart Eat Breathe Thrive. Since its inception, she has brought the program to scale in thirty-two U.S states and seven countries.

Prior to her work in the charitable sector, Chelsea worked as a researcher and grant writer in a psychoneuroimmunology laboratory. Her early research focused on how yoga affects the immune systems of people with HIV/AIDs and cancer. She is currently overseeing a multi-study research initiative on yoga in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders, which includes two randomized controlled trials.

In 2020, Chelsea took on an additional role as Director for the Give Back Yoga Foundation UK. She is currently spearheading an initiative to bring therapeutic yoga programs to scale in healthcare systems in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe. Chelsea is an avid swimmer and triathlete, and in her spare time studies Arabic and travels in her campervan.

Who knew we had enough unpopular opinions to fill 2 episodes?

Maddie sits down with Sophie Balisky: best friend, recovery coach, and no-nonsense wordsmith to talk through tightrope-tight topics in the eating disorder world.

Conversation turns into a larger commentary about polarization the way we do discourse and difficult conversations. But we'll save that (and our imminent cancellation) for next week.

Sophie is a freelance writer and eating disorder recovery coach who is passionate about mental health and eating disorder advocacy. Driven by her own past experience with eating disorders, Sophie is a firm believer in the healing powers of honesty and vulnerability when addressing mental health and upholds the therapeutic benefits of story telling through language and art. Alongside being a full-time flight attendant, Sophie is the founder and program coordinator of Silver Linings Foundation’s Peer Support Program for eating disorders. Sophie believes the point of life lies in establishing meaningful connection with other human beings. In her spare time she can be found writing poetry, having philosophical discussions with friends, painting portraits and gluing glitter on her face.

Sometimes we want to go out and conquer the world, and sometimes we just want to be smol and call our mom.

Maddie has crash landed into a body she doesn’t recognize, and reflects about all the growing up we do and don’t do during our eating disorders, and through recovery.

Who are we when we’re all alone and not performing? And how many plates can we spin before they start to wobble?

What do our endocrine systems have to do with eating disorders? Well, everything. From mood to metabolism, fertility to bones, hormones touch every function of the body; and stress (especially undereating) taxes each and every corner. Maddie interviews endocrinologist Dr. Greg Dodell to help us get a handle on our hormones.

Other tangents include: Is adrenal fatigue real? Why is there so much weight bias in the medical field?

Gregory Dodell, MD FACE is a board-certified endocrinologist. He received his medical degree from Albany Medical College. He completed his internal medicine and endocrinology Fellowship at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, affiliated with Columbia University. He is the President of Central Park Endocrinology, PC.

It's spooky season! In the run up to Halloween, Maddie discusses group therapy in eating disorder recovery. It seems, that all the fellow participants she meets are just the ghosts of her past in one big haunted house of eating disorder land.

Stories include forbidden words and a potentially controversial take on who should participate in eating disorder groups, "safe spaces", and freedom to express opinions. Spoiler: there are very few rounds of applause, and a few weird ASMR-y voice impersonations..??

After months of trying to eat like a “normal person”, Maddie is realizing how time consuming recovery is. Making the right choices (aka, the ones her eating disorder hates), day after day, while having to *gasp* prepare, eat, and clean up after meals - no wonder people get take-out.

😈 Since the late 90s, the villain of macronutrients has been the carbohydrate. Which is odd, since our brains run almost exclusively on them. ⁣

🥐 Today, in an effort to validate her hypothesis about Oats & Feelings, and fight her own carbophobia, Maddie speaks to registered dietician Christy Maloney about how carbs got such a bad rap, both in and out of the eating disorder world. They also discuss the science of carbohydrate use in the body, demystify keto, and sort out why we feel so much better (or at least feel so much) when we’re properly fuelled.⁣

We hear a lot about “being enough” but what about *having* enough. This week, Maddie is cleaning out her closet(s) and confronting some skeletons in the form of hoarding behaviours.

When your body and mind are both feeling the effects of malnourishment, we see a seeming paradox of hoarding, but it turns out, this is not so paradoxical, and not so uncommon.

Maddie thinks she has recovery imposter syndrome. According to common representations of eating disorder recovery, there should be more meltdowns, more yelling, more throwing food.

Recovery seems kind of...dull? Today, Maddie talks about the quiet moments of recovery, the slow trek to the beach through the jungle, and the validity of recovering quietly.

Maddie Quinlan is no longer starving. But she’s still hungry.

Hungry for brave conversations about eating disorders; hungry for a life of recovery; and hungry for authenticity in how we talk about mental health and being a human.

It’s back to school and back to season 2 starting next Wednesday.
as Uncovery continues to follow Maddie’s stumbles and successes in getting comfy in her own skin, in her own way.

🫶🏻6 months, 30 episodes, countless moments of uncovery. And it went by in a blink.

☀️Now, a small summer break and a moment to reflect on some of our favourite moments of Uncovery’s first season.

💖This little personal project has transformed my recovery more than I can possibly explain. And I can only hope that it’s brought something new to light for someone out there listening.

🎙I’ll still be here working on episodes in the background, and as we continue to have nourishing (heh) conversations, reach out with anything you’d like to hear, or your favourite moment(s) of the first season.

😮‍💨 A particularly insidious part of eating disorder brains is the comparison game they play out and, relatedly, those with EDs can often pick each other out a mile away. It’s not just a look, it’s an energy.⁣

☕️ While drinking a blasphemously-prepared cup of coffee, Maddie reflects on the way “takes one to know one” has manifested differently depending on where she’s been in her eating disorder and recovery journey.⁣

🇬🇧 She also shares a piece of her writing from an unforgettable moment in a stuffy tube car in London. ⁣

😮‍💨 It’s all fun and games until your body starts changing…

🧍🏻‍♀️The majority of people struggle with body image at some point in their lives, and for those with eating disorders, it can be a foundational driver of the discomfort in recovery, especially when weight gain is a part of the process. We have a hard time accepting what our healthiest selves look and feel like, and that’s if we even have an accurate vision of them at all (thanks, body dysmorphia!).

💖 Paralleling a transitional spot in her own recovery journey, today Maddie speaks to Kristina Bruce about weight gain, body image, and how we can get comfortable in our own skin. And shares a couple of first-hand stories from listeners.

As a Body Acceptance Coach, Kristina Bruce specializes in helping women break free from dieting and negative body image. Calling upon her training and as a certified Integrative Life Coach, as well as education in health studies, sociology, yoga, meditation, and self-inquiry methodologies, Kristina works with clients to help them re-connect to their deeper selves so they can live empowering lives in the bodies they have.

🤨 Have you ever wondered what happens when you purposely starve 36 people? Don’t worry; they tested that!

🧠 The Minnesota Starvation Study is a terribly unethical but important piece of research in understanding the effects of malnourishment on the human body, as well as the long-term behavioural and psychological impacts of restriction.

💡 Today, Maddie is getting nerdy to understand what the parallels are between the participants of this study and those suffering with eating disorders, and what this might mean for eating disorder recovery.

👩‍👧 There is nothing more fierce than a mother on a mission to save her child’s life. In an underfunded and under-resourced system for eating disorder recovery, the catastrophic consequences often go unnoticed until it hits close to home (or in this case, under your own roof).

💜 Today, Maddie speaks to Cendrine Tremblay about what brought her to found and lead the Silver Linings Foundation, an organization committed to to bridging gaps in accessibility and care of eating disorders in Alberta.

💡 Her story is personal, her work is powerful. For anyone seeing a loved one struggle, this episode is unmissable.

--

Cendrine Tremblay co-founded Silver Linings Foundation in response to her experience as a parent of a child with an eating disorder. During her family’s journey through the illness, Cendrine met many parents and practitioners who recognized the need for improving the continuum of care for eating disorders in Alberta. Cendrine now shares with Silver Linings her expertise in finance and management and experience in financial services, and the high-tech health care sector. She has more than 20 years of operations and oversight experience in not-for-profit organizations, through board and executive committee positions.

🚨 Chirpy Maddie can’t come to the podcast right now. Why? Because the UK just enacted legislation which will almost certainly put those with eating disorders (and those without) at risk.

📝 Think of this episode as a spoken word persuasive essay on why the UK’s new regulation on menu calories is trash.

😡 Come for the outrage, stay for the unintended puns.
