aka The New York Sherpa, Josiah married into the horse world and has a way of seeing things with fresh eyes. When he's not adventuring with Alix and the kids, he's promoting NY tourism and consulting for destinations across the country.
“Rodeo’s First Lady”
Barbara Inez Barnes Lucas, aka Tadpole “Tad” Lucas, was a 3-Time All-Around Cowgirl winner and a founder of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, “the 1st pro sporting association started by women for women.” She was also the 1st woman inducted into the National Rodeo Hall of Fame.
She was starting horses when she was 7 years old, and by the time she was a teenager, she was riding bulls in the streets to raise money for the Red Cross during WWI. She elevated trick riding on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as setting a high bar in rodeo, which she served in until the end of her life. It was said she had “a way with horses” and brimmed with incredible talent.
She would go on to perform with one of her daughters who rode with her since she was born…a baby riding in her mother’s hat to performing amazing tricks as quite the team.
Tad Lucas won many awards and hall of fame inductions, but the mark she left on western women might be the most glorious triumph of all.
