The Dominican Republic, long one of the top Caribbean destinations for U.S. travelers, is in the spotlight for reasons no country heavily dependent on tourism ever wants to be associated with – a rash of deaths of seemingly healthy people who succumbed under oddly similar circumstances.

So far, we know of at least six American tourists who have died -- four this year, two last year --with word of their deaths coming not from U.S. or Dominican officials, but in dribs and drabs from relatives or friends who come forward, driven by concerns that the official cause may not be credible or tell the whole the story.

The car used by a New York tourists who went missing last month has been recovered off the coast of the Dominican Republic, police said Friday.

Authorities extracted a car from the area where Orlando Moore and Portia Ravenelle went missing on March 27, according to Col. Frank Felix Duran Mejia.

The vehicle identification number of the car pulled from the Caribbean Sea matches the number of the car Moore and Ravenelle had rented, according to Duran Mejia.

Cheryl Freeman shared just a day of vacation bliss in the Dominican Republic with Orlando Moore and Portia Ravenelle.

But her memories could help determine the whereabouts of the missing couple.
Moore and Ravenelle were supposed to return to New York from the Dominican Republic on March 27, Moore's half-sister said.

Orlando Moore's family is searching for him and Portia Ravenelle after the pair did not return from a vacation in the Dominican Republic.
