In our latest newsletter shared her recent stay at , a legendary Adirondack “great camp” set amidst 70 wooded acres on a lakefront 5.5-hours north of NYC. Cell and wi-fi are unreliable …but that’s the point of The Point. Privacy, tranquility, genteel rusticity, all under the most attentive care of a devoted staff that often outnumber guests.

The ethos is that this is your home for the weekend, and you are encouraged to (respectfully) own it. A long weekend here is effectively like a private house party with group dinners—one of them in full black tie—and shared activities. Try your hand at curling or skating on the frozen lake (where there is a roaring fire pit and bar on the ice, of course). No need to bring equipment: just borrow from the warming shack filled with hiking poles and boots, snowshoes, XC skis and skates.

Long before Wollman Rink or even Central Park as we know it existed, New Yorkers loved to lace up their skates on small frozen ponds in winter. Olmstead and Vaux’s original Greensward plan included a skating pond, which opened to skaters years before the rest of the park was completed. Skating is still free at the Conservatory Water by East 74th street when conditions permit—you just need your own skates!

The Hotel Bellevue des Alpes, a grand hotel that dates back to 1840 is still family-run and accessible solely by train, funicular, or on foot. In the shadow of the Jungfrau, this historic hotel sits at over 2,000 m in the center of the Kleine Scheidegg ski-region. It has remained largely the same (bar the latest renovations added in 1948) since it was built. A brass revolving door shuffles guests into the entrance hall and back in time —no high-speed internet or televisions offer a quiet retreat amidst snow-covered surroundings.

Iguazú Falls, the world’s largest waterfall system (so huge that it spans two countries) draws crowds of Brazilians and Argentinians in January and February. By March, though, the crowds thin, the heat and humidity subside, and the falls maintain their majesty before the dry season. Early mornings are the perfect time to explore miles of trails with the rising sun on the Brazilian side illuminating the falls—where, if you’re lucky, you might spot the electric blue morpho butterflies flitting around in the spray.

As romantic as skiing in the Alps sounds, it’s actually pretty attainable compared to some exorbitant peak-season prices in the Western U.S. Opting for Chamonix not only drops you down into enchanting snow covered hamlets with much better slopeside food, but also can be reached by one New-York-to-Geneva flight plus an hour transfer.

We caught up with recently to hear about the making of her new book, “Sauna: The Power of Deep Heat.” She drove over 10,000 miles through Sweden, Finland, Norway and Estonia to track down saunas with Finnish photographer . Navigating through windswept archipelagos, deep-scented pine forests and empty lakes, they found some of the most photogenic saunas in the region, from remote Estonian treehouses to Oslo’s ‘stove altars’ that host live DJ sets. Head to the link in bio for a peek at a few of her favorite saunas that are accessible to travelers.

The Bernina Express winds its way amidst glaciers, snow-capped peaks and crystal-clear lakes during its journey from Tirano to St Moritz. If you can, book the window seat to take in panoramic vistas of Europe’s highest (and arguably most scenic) track, as you traverse through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges.

For a secluded and sun-soaked retreat, in the laid-back Brazilian fishing town of Trancoso delivers on tropical, rustic charm. The brilliantly colorful casas, dating back centuries to the village’s founding, have been thoughtfully updated using reclaimed materials and antiques in collaboration with local artisans. Just an 8-minute walk from the hotel, along a fisherman’s path and across a wooden bridge, you’ll find their beach lounge. The antique wooden boat-turned beach bar is the perfect spot to let the jet-lag melt away after a caipirinha or two.
