"So hereâs the thing. âMoreâ doesnât always mean âbetterâ and it doesnât always mean ânecessary.â
I know thatâs super confusing coming from a maximalist stylist but stay with me:
Styling to me is about enhancing whatâs already there. When I approach a look I literally build the look around 1 piece of clothing or one accessoryâwhatever it is that sticks out to me at that time and then I start building around that one thing.
Often times, when a look just starts feeling off to me, itâs because I really didnât have a direction for where I wanted it to go. Either, I didnât plan it out in my head enough or I was conflicted between a ton of different ideas and now weâve got a hott mess on our hands and not in a good way, more like a âHouston weâve got a problemâ typa wayđ and ya girl needs help asap!
When youâre in the âbuilding your lookâ stage, donât be afraid to add and take away, try and un-try certain things, especially when it comes to accessories. Being successful with maximalist styling requires a ton of practice, flexibility with the direction that the look starts going.
Accessorizing is an art, in and of itself peeps, trust me. Your accessories should feel like they are part of one pieceâlike art not like thatâs a ton of junk that makes no sense around this personâs neck and all over their body. They should add to your outfit not take away or distract in any way. Itâs ok to do away with accessories on your look, sometimes youâve got a look that CAN stand alone, so let it speak for itself.
When Iâm styling I literally become one with my looks and one with my model. I am so in tune with whatâs working and whatâs not really fitting. There have been times where I have recreated a look from scratch on the spot to fit a modelâs vibe. A good stylist needs to be so in tune with who theyâre working with and flexible in that way, to really be successful at this type of style...â
