Had a great time last night discussing Danielle Celermajer's wonderful book Summertime: Reflections on a Vanishing Future. Here's a recording of Dave's discussion with climate ethicist and theologian Byron Smith where they cover: the way in which human beings relate to place under the conditions of capitalism; the role of Australian society in the ongoing climate crisis; how we might begin to think about moral responsibility in the face of suffering of the the magnitude as that produced by the 2019/20 bushfires. Enjoy!

Hi all, we are really looking forward to our online discussion evening on Dany Celermajer's Summertime on the 14th of December. If you are looking to buy a physical copy please consider ordering it from The Little Lost Bookshop. They have been kind enough to order in some extra copies for us. They are also a great locus of solidarity for their community which is exactly the kind of business we want to support at the Eucatasrophe. https://www.littlelostbookshop.com.au/products/9781760899035?fbclid=IwAR21nZBkqur9rfOMufQCHordCWcomPmoG-OWU2WdnFweSpW_hbnUzME9xxw

A different kind of nature writing, for a different kind of landscape.I went and sat alone where Jimmy has been lying. It is way down in the bush. The light is soft, the air and the earth are cool, and the smell is of leaves and the river. I cannot presume to know what he is doing when he lies here,...

The Eucatastrophe

The Eucatastrophe is a podcast exploring true human ends and how life may be enchanted. Dave and Joel meander and banter through politics, pop-culture, church and society to explore how a theological imagination creatively envisages and serves the common good.

JRR Tolkien coined the term ‘eucatastrophe’ to describe the sudden happy turn in a story. It is the ‘good catastrophe’, deliverance amidst sorrow, joy piercing tragedy, resurrection defeating death, a jolting glimpse of truth.

We think that ‘good catastrophe’ sums us up pretty well. We are undoubtedly works-in-chaotic-messy-catastrophic-progress. We’re not the heroes you deserve or need ... or asked for. We’re barely Zack Snyder film-worthy. But still, we want to stare down the theological and ideological abyss – the state-individual-market paradigms of left, right, church and society.
