Residents can get involved with shaping the improvement scheme for Foss Islands pathways on Saturday 13th January with a drop-in session at York Hospitals Sports and Social Club, Clifton.

Sustrans have begun work to improve the accessibility of the paths for those with mobility issues as well as prams, buggies, and those who engage with active travel.

Mark Sheffield from Sustrans said that everyone should be able to interact with York's green spaces.

Helping other People in Need Group Street Kitchen has thanked residents and businesses for donating Christmas foods for vulnerable residents over the festive period.

The charity have voiced concerns over the increase in demand for their hot meals as the winter months bring cold weather.

Business Waste York helped donate 45 portions of soup, turkey dinners, and desserts. David Wilson from the company said that even though York is considered an affluent area, people are still struggling...

City of York Council is asking residents to think about what they'd like to see transport look like in the future through the council's Our Big Transport Conversation.

The public consultation shares 10 key policy areas to form a new Local Transport Plan that aims to deliver a more sustainable and reliable transport network.

Cllr Pete Kilbane told That's TV that York has a transport problem, and outlined some of the issues residents are struggling with.

City of York Council is launching a fresh appeal to recruit foster carers to support children and young people who can’t live with their own families.

The council hopes to build on community support seen during the COVID-19 pandemic and housing Ukrainian refugees to help foster one of the around 200 children and young people they care for.

Corporate Director of Children and Education Martin Kelly said they want to ensure that young people who are born in York can stay in York."

Disability campaigners joined together in the city centre last Thursday to celebrate the end of parking restrictions for blue badge holders

It comes as disabled parking in pedestrianised areas was banned in November 2021 by the previous Liberal Democrat/Green-run council, but which was reversed by the new Labour administration.

York Disability Rights Forum's Marilyn Crawshaw explained that it was a relief that the ban had been overturned, and hopes it won't be repeated in the future.

A York foodbank has growing concerns that demand for their service is only likely to worsen in the new year.

It comes as they've seen a rise in demand for the Leeman Road site, which has seen students and NHS staff looking for assistance during the winter months.

Students at Fulford School have been raising funds for York Food Bank and other local charities this Christmas.

The big donation, organised by Sixth Form student leaders, is supporting charities such as Bear a Gift to donate teddy bears for children in hospital and Safe and Sound Homes for those facing homelessness.

A Yorkshire-based author has been raising awareness on her fight against county lines crime at No 10 Downing Street.

It comes as Christina Gabbitas won a Point of Light Award for her voluntary work and for launching the Children's Literature Festival.

She is currently visiting schools across York and North Yorkshire with her Trapped in County Lines book to teach secondary school pupils about the dangers of being groomed into county lines.

A street kitchen in York has advised residents how they can help those sleeping rough this winter.

Helping other People in Need Group Street Kitchen has said they have seen more people seeking hot food and winter clothing as the weather continues to get colder.

Helen Meadows from HOPING explained that winter can have devastating effects on those who are homeless, but said that the York community is great at coming together at this time of year.

An education service's headquarters that burnt down in a fire at Elvington Industrial Estate has thanked York residents for donating items and funds to restore the service.

Ad Astra York provides education to young people who struggle in mainstream education environments.

But a blaze on Tuesday that devastated their learning facilities on Tuesday means that they are looking to raise £100,000 to continue their work.

York Central's Rachael Maskell MP has said that central government are wasting millions of taxpayer pounds as they push forward with their Rwanda immigration policy.

It comes as Rishi Sunak announced a range of measures, saying that the real question is for the Labour party, asking what is their plan.

The Labour MP what her party's plan is, as well as her reaction to the extra £100m that could be spent on the asylum deal.

Downing Street has said the costs associated with the deal were set out in the original agreement with Rwanda and that it was always going to involve "additional funding".

Legal migration minister Tom Pursglove said the money would also ensure the policy is "robust", adding the scheme was key to reducing the funds being spent on housing migrants in UK hotels, which currently costs £8m each day.

A charity is hosting a carol service at York Minster on 16th December, led by autistic and disabled children.

York Inspirational Kids has worked with children with additional needs to help them take part in the event, where the children will read lessons and carols about what is important to them at Christmas.

CEO of York Inspirational Kids, Ruth Thompson, explained that involving the families of those with additional needs will create a truly inclusive event.

City of York Council has granted funding to a York sports club after they doubled their player numbers.

Bootham Futsal Club - York has had an influx of interest in the ladies' team, adding that they aim to keep females of all ages involved in the sport for as long as possible.

Chairman and head coach Chris Collins explained how the funding will support women and girls looking to get involved in futsal.

Since 25th November, York-based charity IDAS (Independent Domestic Abuse Services) has highlighted the annual 16 Days of Activism campaign to examine the different ways in which women and girls experience abuse and violence.

Running until Sunday 10th December, , the international campaign aims to raise awareness of different types of gender-based abuse and how they can be combatted.

A singer's group is hosting their seasonal concert at St Chad's Church in Campleshon Road on Friday 8th December, intending to spread some festive cheer collect funds for Age UK York's Keep Your Pet Service.

Sounds Fun Singers have been running for 12 years, and have previously performed at York Railway Station along with several local choirs to raise funds for SASH, which helps to prevent young people from becoming homeless in the city.

Averil Rushton from Sounds Fun Singers explained they wanted the concert to promote some festive cheers as well as raise vital funds.

A York designer has won a Northern Design Award for restoring the York Minster Refectory building into a restaurant.

Restoration works by the Chapter of York aimed to transform the Grade II listed building after its former school closed in 2020.

York Minster Refectory also received a surprise opening by King Charles III and Queen Camilla in April.

A new e-scooter trial that implements the vehicles with a safety sound system is being trialled in York to protect blind and partially sighted people.

The Acoustic Vehicle Alert System emits a sound from e-scooters to improve pedestrian road safety, with the pilot working with the Thomas Pocklington Trust and North Yorkshire Sight Loss Council.

York Cares' Christmas Collection aims to donate 6,000 items, including toiletries, food, and warm clothing, to relieve those struggling with the cost of living crisis.

A teenager has been awarded a Yorkshire Young Achievers Award for saving the life of a man on a York bridge.

19-year-old Owen Jeffers was on a night out when he happened across a man behaving oddly on Ouse Bridge.

Owen was able to convince the man down from the parapet and leave him in the care of police.

York Liberal Democrats have tabled a motion to get fair funding for lower-league football clubs including York City FC.

Councillors will be asked to back ‘Fair Game‘, a national campaign that calls for an independent regulator with a refocus on values rather than profit.

It will go before the full council tonight.

Cllr Darryl Smalley said urgent action is needed to protect historic local institutions such as York City that play a key role in the life of local communities.

York's Menfulness has shared a new video poem that urges men to speak about their mental health to mark International Men's Day.

'One More Day' was created in memory of all those who have been lost to su***de, the largest cause of death in men under the age of 50 in the UK.

On Sunday, Members of Mothers Rebellion for climate Justice & Extinction Rebellion Families York sat outside York Minster to call on the government for urgent change on the climate crisis.

The protest was part of a global movement to voice concerns on the impact of climate change, and how it would affect their children in later years.

York Disability Week will begin at the end of this week, celebrating the human rights of people who identify as disabled or as having an impairment.

The talks, workshops, musical events, and advice sessions aim to increase awareness of disabled people's situations in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

Dr Marilyn Crawshaw, of the York Disability Rights Forum, explained it's also a chance to celebrate recent victories, particularly the reversal of York's blue badge ban.

York Central's Rachael Maskell MP has criticised City of York Council for its poor communication over its decision not to extend the Salvation Army’s £95,000-a-year contract to deliver rough sleeping services.

Charles Malarkey, of the Salvation Army, claimed that a one-month extension contract sent to give staff more notice was sent so late that the Salvation Army did not have sufficient time to sign it.

The Labour MP explained the decision could negatively impact York's rough sleepers.

A City of York Council spokesperson has said: “The council, recognising the poor communications in respect of the expiry of the contract from both parties’ perspectives, endeavoured as a goodwill gesture to facilitate a one-month extension to the contract.

“This was before the contract expired so was not too late but did need a prompt response, however, the Salvation Army did not feel able to enter into the extension before the contract expired, therefore the option to extend expired.”

York Liberal Democrats have criticised the decision of the council's Planning Committee to refuse planning permission to improve York Station's portico.

The LNER application would have made the taxi rank and drop-off area an enclosed retail space, with LNER now warning that they may use investment at other stations after the revised plans' refusal.

Councillor Ashley Mason said it was regrettable the application has been refused, as it could risk investment for the whole Station Gateway project.

York Carers Centre is backing an open letter to the government, calling for more support for young carers.

Now with 1,000 signatures, the letter is calling on the Prime Minister to outline what he will do to ensure the government is responding to the needs of carers.

CEO of York Carers Centre, Sharron Smith, explained that many young carers are struggling with their mental health and find it difficult to reach out for local support.

Can you find the ten Nutcrackers hidden across ?

The York BID has put ten Nutcracker statues out in York to encourage people to explore the city and boost the local economy.

The statues have been designed by artist This Is Sian Ellis, with York charities and schools such as York Mind, Changing Lives Yorkshire, St Wilfrid's RC Primary, and Wiggington Primary.

Carl Alsop from The York BID explained that they wanted the community to be an integral part of helping design the nutcrackers.

Council bosses have confirmed that a free school meals pilot will begin in January for every pupil at Westfield Primary School.

The council have set aside £100,000 to meet the cost of these meals, but a Community Fund funded by the public will also support the pilot.

City of York Council Executive will discuss this evening whether to extend the pilot.

Executive member for education, children, and young people, Cllr. Bob Webb, said that he cannot wait for the Conservative Government to increase funding at the expense of vulnerable York families...

Following previous calls for the Government to increase school meal funding earlier this year, a spokesperson responded: "Over a third of pupils in England now receive free school meals in education settings, compared with one in six in 2010, adding they have extended eligibility several times to more groups of children than any other government over the past half a century."

A Yorkshire campaigner had hailed the Supreme Court's decision this morning to rule the British government's plan to deport migrants to Rwanda as unlawful.

Lord Reed, president of the Supreme Court, said there was a "real risk" asylum seekers could be sent from Rwanda to the places they fled from.

Nicola David from One Life to Live which campaigns against large-scale asylum sites said she was delighted with the news. However, she added it is regrettable that the government are still pursuing similar policies...

Helping other People in Need Group Street Kitchen has started a new partnership with York Mosque & Islamic Centre to create a fortnightly, all-faith Community Kitchen Project.

Backed by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the project aims to support York’s homeless and struggling families by providing a warm space and hot food.

That’s TV reporter, Sasha Jackson, visited the mosque’s kitchen to understand how this outreach project helps deliver both mental and physical support.
