I was indescribably excited to see Janahlee and know our hard work had paid off, but there was a little voice in me that said “already?”.
I never felt like I got to the point where I really had to push myself, most of the previous 77 days I had spent trying to get my food and home situation set up in a sustainable way that would carry me for the next 77 and beyond. Having accomplished that, it was slightly disappointing to have to stop right when I felt I was getting started. I wish Janahlee could of stayed for awhile, we could of just transitioned from Alone into Tribe 😆

Getting a rabbit on day one allowed me to get protein right away, and after that I set out so many snares that rabbits just kept coming…that is, until I figured out the fishing and large game behavior on my land.
That wasn’t plan A, but being adaptable allowed me to take advantage of the opportunities that arose on my territory and avoid starvation.
Ultimately, the 77 days on Alone passed with a relative “lack of suffering”. It was hard and at times incredibly stressful, but in the end the show was over before the true misery started ;)
Too soon? Maybe a little too soon for my ego.. but just in time for everything else ;). Hallelujah…

The ability to keep and manage reindeer that can be ridden is a skill very few still possess, but one that the Evenki have been masters of for generations. Much respect and gratitude to them and may they thrive long into the future. 🙏

Fishing on #Alone proved to be a challenge initially! In fact, I got the moose before I caught my first fish! That said, the scouting that went into moose hunting and rabbit snaring proved useful in finding promising shorelines.
By the time I caught this fish, the ravens had learned that where I was there was food and would literally follow me through the woods waiting for a free meal…(they do this with bear/wolves too)…after I caught this fish I turned around to continue fishing and one opportunistic forest freeloader managed to steal the best parts 😆👀

An overview of camp at around day 24 of #Alone. Every day I was working towards a sustainable foundation that would carry me long into the winter and beyond if necessary.
With my moose tag filled and meat smoked i could hang it out of my shelter and consider my next move for protecting it from predators while also growing my cache with other sources of food: namely fishing, which up to this point had been very difficult.

I just realized my phone is waterproof, forgive me if I start posting videos like this too much 😆. I do love seeing groups of fish like this: I feel like we are on the same team (though occasionally I take some to eat, I wish the rest long, prosperous lives - I get the same feeling when I see elk,deer,moose, etc. #sameteam )
But It’s always fun to tie up a quick fly in the bush and catch something with it. I used a flicker feather I found as it has that nice black dot on it. This was during a 42 mile trek through the wilderness I did with the llamas last week…I got back and immediately took the family and some friends out for a few days: tomorrow it’s back to the wilderness again with a group of #assyrian friends I met at a conference last year.

15 or so years ago I built this underground cabin (that might of been before #tinyhome were popular 😆) so that I had a place to stay when I came back from my trips to Russia. It held up better than I expected for that a shaded, northern sloped buried cabin in the VA woodlands. Still going strong!
I was just winging it and definitely learned a thing or two: mostly, don’t be cheap and use railroad ties: no matter how much you paint/coat them they still stink 😆.
But in its heyday it had rainwater collection, a little kitchenette, was a short walk to a sauna we built, and had a convenient hole in the ground toilet.. what more could a person ask for?
I think I spent about $300 building this - just for the metal roofing, everything else was scavenged.

I got this electric ubcobikes in the middle of the winter which, needless to say, limits access a bit. That said I’ve been really curious to get it out and see its actual range.
Recently Ive been getting it off the roads and hit the mountains.. immediately climbed up off road for 1000+ feet. In total I covered about 24 miles of mixed on/off road w varied elevation and still had more than half of my battery left. I was pretty happy with that given that I was pushing it pretty hard!
Of course it’s not a dirt bike, but a utility vehicle - think of it as a silent mode transportation that can carry weight (in this case I strapped my kifaru_intl pack to it) not a dirt bike rallying machine…at times I was pushing it hard enough up steep inclines that the bike needed to reduce speed and I’d use my foot (as shown) to boost it up to a spot to take a short break and let it cool. Of course I wanted to push its limits!
I really like it - it’s fun being to drive around without disturbing the wildlife .. you end up seeing more. Anyway - that’s the update on the Hunt edition Ubco for those that have asked!

Being barely visible from the valley below this hidden waterfall is rarely, if ever visited. Despite being 6000’ up and April - I couldn’t resist making my way up there and getting underneath! As It only runs in the spring I decided I had to take the several hours necessary to climb up to it while I had the chance - you never know when there will be another chance to check something off of the bucket list, so no time is better than the present.
It did not disappoint! Even more impressive up close..

Fat is, of course, gold in a survival situation! Your body requires lots of it to keep going and it’s definitely the most difficult food group to procure in excess in a hunter/gatherer situation.
If you do get it you need to know how to preserve it so it doesn’t go rancid! Rendering it will greatly extend its life. Also, it’s easier to cook with and use in lard form.
It’s also quite simple - no need to over complicate it as it can be done right over a campfire no problem!

Family and friends, fishing, camping, and exploring! It’s amazing watching the kids overcome challenges, learn new things, push outside their comfort zones, and become resilient, well rounded individuals (all things we should continue to do as long as possible - nature is a great catalyst for that) - Grateful to be able share life with them!
Seeing them reel in a big ol’ fish is even more fun than doing it myself 😆
