⏳ Early-bird Pricing for Productivity for Engineering Managers Course Expiring Soon

I just wanted to send a quick nudge today because the early-bird pricing that I’m offering to the Engineering & Leadership community is expiring tomorrow - at 11:59 PM (ET) on Friday, March 11, to be precise.

The first fifty students who enrol in PEM can use the code PRODUCTIVITY50 to take advantage of the pricing. After that, the code expires.

You can sign up for the course using this link: https://loom.ly/p6LzUyE

The course is designed specifically to help overworked, overwhelmed engineering managers and leaders take control of their time, learn to prioritize, and find balance.

Best of all? The course only takes a couple hours each week, and you can watch the videos whenever you like, wherever you like.

As always, if you have any questions about the course, or anything else for that matter, just hit reply to this email and fire away. I would love to hear from you.

Earlier this month, I had the great fortune of joining Isaac Oakeson of the Civil Engineering Academy on his CEA Podcast for a discussion on making engineers good managers. Isaac was a fantastic host, and the conversation was a lot of fun. His show is must-listen for civil engineers.

This week, Ralf Specht's book Building Corporate Soul will be released. Ralf has some incredible insights to share on the importance of soul within an organization that can be applied in any industry. He was also an awesome guest on the Engineering & Leadership podcast earlier this month.

I would highly encourage all leaders to have a look at Ralf's work.

You can check out the episode here: https://loom.ly/rTk7Vss
Or have a look at the book here: https://loom.ly/PfrgqCw

Many of us know how to set goals, work towards them, and work efficiently.

That is, of course, until the (ahem) excrement hits the rotating air diffuser...

When that happens, we slip into panic mode and all our old, ineffective work habits come back to rear their ugly heads.

The result? Our productivity plummets. We work longer hours yet somehow get less done.

In my third video on productivity for engineering managers, I cover three important skills engineering managers need to *sustain* their productivity over the long run (even when work is nuts).

Check out the video here: https://loom.ly/oe3MFpg

Once you've watched it, I would love to know what you thought. Leave a comment here or right on the video page to reach out.

***Quick Favour and an Announcement***

Hey there!

I’m really close to wrapping up my long-awaited productivity course for engineering managers. I’ll be releasing it later in February. But before I do, I have a couple questions I’d like to ask you. Could you help me out?

You can answer the questions here (and get a little more detail on the productivity course) at this link:

Thanks so much!

Pat

Hi there, I'm very close to finishing my long-awaited Productivity for Engineers Managers course. I'm planning on launching it in February. The course will be entirely focused on helping engineering managers improve their productivity using a system that I've developed over the course of my career.....

Engineering Leader Protip: When running a meeting, it's critical that minutes be captured... but you don't have to do the note taking yourself!

Try bringing along a member of your team to capture minutes so that you can focus on chairing the meeting. Managing the conversation is an important role that's all but impossible to do if you've got your head buried in your notebook.

This can also be a great opportunity to expose your team members to meetings and people that they might not otherwise have an excuse to attend, making this a win-win arrangement.

[FREE WEBINAR] Strategies for Becoming an Effective Engineering Manager

Register here: https://loom.ly/3-DfqXo

Many ambitious engineering students dream of one day transitioning into management and leadership roles in their careers. When an engineer finally makes the jump from being an individual contributor to a manager, however, it’s very common for them to feel overwhelmed and unprepared. It’s not until they assume their new roles that they realize how significant a departure management is from their previous role, and how little preparation they were provided by their organization.

This webinar is designed to teach aspiring engineering managers some of the key skills they need to develop early in their careers in order to become excellent future leaders.

Attendees will learn:

- The important differences between management and leadership
- How to develop practical leadership skills at any career stage
- Self-management skills and how to transition those skills to formal leadership roles

Engineering Leader Protip: When checking email, try sorting by sender and dealing with messages from the most important sender first, rather than the most recent message. You could go even further and set up filters to automatically find messages from your clients, your team, and your managers.

This way, you'll always deal with what's most important, rather than what happened to have arrived most recently.

[PODCAST] Business Engineering: Why Engineers Should Have Business Skills

In today’s interview, we’ll hear about the incredible power of what some call business engineering. Most engineers spend their time deeply embedded in the world of developing products and delivering technical services and solutions. What happens outside the walls of the engineering department is rarely exposed or explained. We’re never taught to understand financial statements or other critical markers of organizational health.

My next guest believes that that’s bad for business, and is taking great strides to change that trend.

Duncan Oyevaar is an engineer, TEDx speaker, and the Founding Partner of the Business Savvy Academy, an organization dedicated to helping engineers and other front-line workers understand the business side of the organizations they work for, and to use that knowledge to drive grassroots improvements to the organization. And as you’ll hear in the episode, these projects drive some incredible business outcomes.

Duncan Oyevaar believes in the power of business engineering. He has seen that organizations can dramatically improve themselves by equipping their engineers with excellent business skills, and he’…
