Audre Lorde (1934-1992)
Audre Lorde was a lauded writer and poet known for her radical honesty and fight against racism and sexism. Self-described as a "Black, le***an, mother, warrior, poet," Lorde wrote often about the intersections of her identities. After earning both a BA from Hunter College and a masters from Columbia University, Lorde spent the 1960s working as a librarian in New York. In the 1970s she worked as a poet-in-residence at Tougaloo College in Mississippi and began publishing poetry collections. The works were informed by the intersections of race, class, and gender, and became increasingly more political. Some of her most famous works are "The Master's Tools Won't Dismantle The Master's House" and "Martha." Lorde passed away in 1992; her first full biography, Warrior Poet, was published by Alexis De Veaux in 2006.

“This constant lying is not aimed at making the people believe a lie, but at ensuring that no one believes anything anymore.
A people that can no longer distinguish between truth and lies cannot distinguish between right and wrong. And such a people, deprived of the power to think and judge, is, without knowing and willing it, completely subjected to the rule of lies.
With such a people, you can do whatever you want.”
—Hannah Arendt, German historian and philosopher (1906–1975)

Some say that 'spinning your wheels' is a negative thing. In fact, the Cambridge Dictionary defines it: ‘to use a lot of effort without achieving anything’. Well...Jean begs to differ!

Our amazing Jean has every intention of spinning the wheels of her red Rocky Mountain road bike 111 kms from Hope to home, on Sunday, September 8th. This will be her 7th ride on National Grandparents Day. It takes a lot of effort but her other intention, with your help, is to achieve her fundraising goal of $7800 for the Grandmotherscampaign.org

Unlike a 78rpm record, she may not be going quite that fast, but she will keep her 78 year old legs at a steady rhythm to reach her goal.

Many of our friends and followers have so generously supported Jean in the past. We encourage you once again to click on the Donate button when you open the link below:

https://slf.akaraisin.com/ui/grandmotherscampaign2024/p/5e3b3a96514f4edb926ad749eb150acf

Please know that YOUR effort is helping achieve the goals of the Grandmothers raising children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. If you are unable to donate, please come out and cheer her on or send energy through the air waves so there is no ‘tail spin’ on the ride!

Thanks again for your support! And please share this post with all your friends!

Sophie Oluwole (also known as Sophie Oluwole Bose) was a Nigerian philosopher and scholar known for her significant contributions to African philosophy, particularly in the areas of Yoruba philosophy and metaphysics. Born in 1935 and passing away in 2018, Oluwole's work has played a pivotal role in challenging Western-centric perspectives of philosophy and promoting the understanding and appreciation of African philosophical traditions.

Oluwole obtained her education at the University of Lagos, where she earned her bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in philosophy. She went on to become the first woman in Nigeria to earn a PhD in philosophy, marking a milestone in both academic achievement and gender equality in her country.

Central to Oluwole's scholarship is her exploration and reinterpretation of Yoruba philosophical thought. She sought to elevate indigenous African philosophies, arguing that they contain sophisticated metaphysical and epistemological insights that deserve recognition within the broader philosophical discourse. Her work aimed to demonstrate the richness and complexity of African philosophical traditions, challenging stereotypes and misconceptions about the supposed lack of philosophy in African cultures.

One of Oluwole's notable contributions is her critique of Western philosophical frameworks and their applicability to African contexts. She argued against the imposition of Western philosophical categories onto African cultures, advocating instead for an approach that respects and integrates indigenous African perspectives.

Oluwole's academic career included teaching positions at the University of Lagos and other institutions, where she mentored numerous students and scholars in African philosophy. She authored several books and articles, including "Socrates and Orunmila" and "Witchcraft, Reincarnation, and the God-Head: Issues in African Philosophy," which have been instrumental in shaping discussions on African metaphysics and epistemology.

Beyond academia, Oluwole was actively engaged in promoting African culture and philosophy through public lectures, seminars, and community outreach initiatives. Her advocacy for the recognition and preservation of African philosophical heritage has had a lasting impact on African intellectual discourse and cultural identity.

Sophie Oluwole Bose was a pioneering figure in African philosophy, known for her efforts to reclaim and reinterpret indigenous African philosophical traditions. Her work continues to inspire scholars and philosophers globally, fostering a deeper understanding of the diversity and richness of philosophical thought across different cultures.

Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS (GAPA), a South African organization supported by SLF, offers sewing courses for grandmothers. It teaches basic tailoring skills and allows grandmothers to upskill and learn to sew new products. It also empowers grandmothers by connecting them with potential opportunities to generate income, such as sewing school uniforms for local schools. One recent graduate, reflecting on the impact the program has had on her life, explained: “I had never done any sewing before. Now I can sew pinafores, dresses, church coats,
skirts, and my sewing school graduation gown, hat, and belt. My life has changed a lot since I started sewing. I was stuck at home and my mind was stuck, not feeling good at all. Now I have something social and useful to do. I tell people I meet to attend the sewing school because when you are at school, your mind goes up!”

As I think about entering my nineties in a few months, I’m wondering how my style is going to evolve. I’m thinking about making it my denim era. Maybe I’ll find myself a nice cowboy and settle down. You can’t just let old age happen to you, people…you need to curate it. Decide what it’s going to look like, and make it happen! Maybe I’ll start a vision board. Any suggestions what I should add to it? What should my 90s look like?

Young people and older ones are the two groups most affected by social isolation and loneliness. At CoGenerate, we believe the most important solution to social isolation and loneliness is to bring these two groups together. Not as victims, but as agents of change. Not for commiseration, but for connection, learning, joy and shared purpose beyond themselves.

On July 24, join CoGenerate Co-CEO Eunice Lin Nichols in conversation with Jillian Racoosin, Executive Director of Foundation for Social Connection - F4SC and an expert on evidence-based models that address social isolation, loneliness and social connection.

They will dig into the current crisis of connection and share the promising role that relationships across generations can play in moving from a society characterized by disconnection to one rooted in deep connection.
