Founded in 1987, BTV relaunched as Brown University Motion Pictures (BMP) in 2013. We are Ivy League's largest student-run film production company.

Currently at BMP, we work on producing 4-5 short-films a semester. All short-films are written by Brown University students, where the selected winners - through our bi-annual Screenplay Competition - go on to see their screenplays come to life on the big screen. Spring 2017 Updates:
The screenplay competition is currently open and accepting submissions for the Spring term.

* Include a brief statement (2-5 sentences) as to why you are suited to tell this story.
* All submissions must be in traditional screenplay format. Type your screenplay using screenwriting software such as CeltX or Final Draft. CeltX is free and can be downloaded on their website.
* On the title page of your script, include a log line of your film.
* Submissions should be 5-12 pages. We will not accept any scripts over 15 pages.
* Do not put your name on the screenplay! All submissions will be read blind.
* You may submit as many scripts as you would like.

We’re looking for students to act in our films this semester, LGBTQIA+ students are encouraged to audition!
Here’s a sneak peek into 2 of our 5 films:
🎥 VIRGO: Acerbic trans woman Maria goes on a le***an odyssey to return a strap-on to her ex the day after their breakup.
🎥 VISITATION: A selfish, yet grieving partner memorializes their dead husband by telling their unlikely history, which flashes back to crucial moments in their lives.

WRITING PROFESSIONALLY FOR THE SCREEN, a Workshop led by Acclaimed Screenwriter Paul Eckstein '85!

Paul Eckstein has been writing, producing, and acting for over 40 years. He completed production of season two of the acclaimed hit Godfather of Harlem (2019) which he co-created, starring Forest Whitaker on EPIX. Prior to that, Paul led the writer's room on the first year of Netflix hit drama Narcos (2015). Paul also wrote and produced the Disney/ABC biblical epic Of Kings and Prophets (2016). His other writing credits include Street Time(2002) (Showtime), Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001) (NBC), The Dead Zone (2002) (USA). These are some of a long list of projects Paul has worked on that emphasize history, high stakes, and excellence in ex*****on with a focus on stories and culture from people of color.

You may submit as many scripts as you would like but they must be in CORRECT SCREENPLAY FORMAT.
On the title page of your script, include a log line of your film. A LOGLINE is a one-sentence summary of your script. Check out examples here: http://www.filmdaily.tv/.../top-box-office-logline-examples
PAGE LENGTH: Short films should be 5-12 pages. We will not accept any scripts over 15 pages. Should your script be longer than 12 but shorter than 15, you run the risk of edging out of producibility. Consider skimming for necessities and cut out what does not have to be on the page.
EXAMPLES: Don’t know what exactly a screenplay looks like? Check out screenwriting websites such as www.screenwriting.info that provide step-by-step instructions on proper formatting. You can also find scripts for some of your favorite films at www.simplyscripts.com
DOCUMENTARIES: If pitching a documentary, please include an in depth production plan that includes locations, possible schedule, general story arc, and a pitch deck adapted for your project (ie. you don't need to include crew/actors, and you may not be able to provide a synopsis). DIRECTING: If your screenplay is selected as a finalist and you would like to direct it, you must apply separately as a director and will be then take part in an interview process. If a writer wants to work on their own script, they are only allowed to direct or work in post-production (such as editing or sound design) in order to avoid creative conflicts on set.
