When we start to read the Bible we must remember that it is not intended to be a self-help book. It is also not a book of do's and don'ts. These perspectives of the Bible affect our mindset of how we come to the scriptures. Both of these perspectives are pure misconceptions. It is unwise to preach or teach the Bible as a set of "psychological prescriptions" or "a handy list of 'how-tos'" (Klein, Blomberg, and Hubbard, "Introduction to Biblical Interpretation", 590). To put it another way, we are not the focus of the Bible.

Instead, the Bible is a revelation of God and His redeeming, restoring work on the earth. God wants to be known by His creation and has given us His book to help do that. Within its own historical context, language, genres, and letters, the Bible reveals God's nature, will, intentions, and purposes to us. We are the ones called to obey it and be transformed by it.

We hope you will continue to read your Bible and come face to face with God, by coming face to face with His Word.
