Mergers and acquisitions are often seen as a desirable method of growing a business. However, many mergers and acquisitions fail to meet their desired outcomes and have in a number of cases resulted in disastrous consequences for the organisations concerned. As organisations grow and become more complex, mergers and acquisitions also become trickier to navigate.

AND ACQUISITIONS

Many mergers and acquisitions fail to meet exceptions. This research briefing reviews the findings of over 480 studies about how to make M&As work...

How do organisations and clients choose a management consultant to work with them?

What criteria and what decision-making processes organisations use to choose consultants is an important question for both organisations and consultants / consultancies. Looking at the current research provides a useful evidence-based overview of the nature of the problem faced by organisations when deciding whether or not to call in external expertise and help and how they go about making the choice between the huge array of consultants and consultancies available in the market.

Principled leadership is essential in todays environment. Issues like the Enron scandal (where the Chief Executive was found guilty of 18 counts of fraud, conspiracy and insider trading) and the VW emissions scandal (where technology was used to cheat emissions testing protocol and a range of other scandals) show that unethical and unprincipled decision-making and leadership is not an uncommon problem and is most likely occurring right now behind closed boardroom doors in some organisation or other.

An interesting and unusual paper about to be published in early January (2016) in the Iran Red Crescent Medical Journal (Yes we really do scour the journals from around the world!) looked at nurse’s experience of organisational or job conflict in hospitals within Iran. The researchers examined the experience of organisational conflict through the eyes of 19 nursing staff from Iranian hospitals. Before you start thinking ‘this has nothing to do with me’, the lessons from this study are really interesting, illuminating and useful for people in most organisations.

One of the hot topics at the moment is open innovation. Open innovation really refers to an information age mindset towards innovation.

The idea is to purposefully seek out external knowledge and ideas. The assumption is that organisations can and should leverage external knowledge and not just focus on their own internal knowledge creation and innovation. This research briefing looks at what conditions help to get open innovation going in an organisation and include the five primary capabilities an organisation needs to make open innovation work.
