Who Are You Trying To Please?

Have you ever struggled with people-pleasing? With caring more about what a human being thinks of you than what your Creator thinks of you? With wanting to honor God, but also wanting to be loved and respected by people?

Writing to believers in Galatia, Paul had a message for those deciding if they should trust the stand-alone grace of Jesus, or add rules and regulations to Jesus’ finished work. He said:

“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭1:10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Every day and every moment, we have a choice: to seek human approval or God’s approval.

And if we genuinely desire to please God, how do we do so?

Contrary to many other religions, it’s not by doing enough good works to tip the scales in our favor. But as Hebrews 11:6 says, “Without faith it’s impossible to please God…” The only part we have to play in our salvation is having faith in the One who saves.

Faith is essentially trust, so think about it: Who do you trust? Who are you trying to please? Who are you hoping notices you and accepts you and is proud of you?

If you’re interested in evaluating your own motives—which can sometimes be difficult—you can ask yourself these questions:

- Am I influenced more by cultural trends, societal pressure, and the opinions of others—or by the Word of God?

- Am I trusting that there’s nothing I can add to the finished work of Jesus, or am I believing the lie that Jesus plus something else is required?

- Am I committed to trusting God, even when I might get canceled, blocked, fired—or even killed?

If popularity is your goal, living for Jesus might be a challenge. But if you’re committed to trusting God, then He calls you to live differently. He invites you to embrace His approval by showing others unconditional kindness, patience, grace, and love.

At the end of this life, you will stand before an audience of One. So who are you trying to please?

When I saw that Jackie and Sondae were on a track together, I was excited to see that as I enjoy both artists! They did not disappoint!

This song "Psalm 88" is a very deep one where Jackie talks about dark times. Also, the thoughts that can float around in a Christian’s mind. I think sometimes it can be seen as taboo for a Christian to even feel anything besides joy. But reading Psalm 88 shows us that yes you can still believe in God and struggle mightily with thoughts and feelings that are the opposite of joy.

I love how she incorporates taking captive those thoughts and seeking hope in the Father who promises to be near no matter what we are going through.

🎼My mind is a rebel, it goes
The devil is testing us, hold
The blessedness next to the chest 'til it knows
The reverence, the hope
I know it's a hope
This ain't killing me
I'm feeling the Trinity more than the enemy
This ain't for sympathy

Yeah, now I write another psalm to you
Oh God, oh God
Father show me your heart as you perform time
Let my prayer rise to you
Lord hear my cry
Give me faith to shoot these arrows in the dark
Way before BC
You ain't no CC
God of love ain't no way
You gon' stop, you walk on the sea
And you welcome me into heaven
Thank you for the cross, but I find joy when I cry to you
Cause you put my head closer to your heart
When I'm down hopeless, I need a cope lens
I remind myself, You never fall🎼

Another set of artists to check out if you haven't!

A word.

I was dead wrong when I thought cliques ended in middle school. I’m watching my pre-teen navigate the nuanced relationships of tightly-knit groups and realizing that some things never change, even after 40. Here’s a few thoughts on finding freedom from cliques and knowing where you belong:

1. As followers of Jesus, it’s time to normalize being an outsider. Fitting in is out. Cliques can serve a purpose in helping our adolescent selves belong, but as we mature that purpose gets stunted. Feeling like an outsider as we get older can be a good thing, because it pushes us to grow. When we grow, we break out of rubber-stamped cultural molds and discover who we really are in Christ. Plus, God doesn’t do closed-off groups: God does not show favoritism. (Rom 2:11)

2. Don’t build a social shelter on sand. Deep down, we all crave security and identity. We all long to be our true selves without the fear of rejection. Fitting in provides a temporary relief for those needs. But relying on surface-level acceptance for safety and identity is like building a social shelter on sand. It’s not going to hold up during the rough winds. It’s a cheap counterfeit to finding our identity and worth in what Jesus says about us. When we begin to let Jesus dictate our value as a daughter of the King, we become less tethered to the opinion or oppression of a social club.

3. Find freedom in your own skin. All freedom comes at a price and the freedom that comes from not fitting in might be one of the least-costly ones. The best invitation we can receive goes something like this: you are free to be the person Jesus says you are and no one will leave you because of it. The people who might leave will be replaced in time with friends who stay steady during the storms and the successes. Let’s normalize being an outsider: there are some wonderful people right there with you.
