From: Peter Challens No doubt you will get plenty of comments on today's events, Sunday, January 21, at Surrey Sports Park. I only went for a sedate workout at the gym as an OAP. Who is responsible for the calendar there that allowed a major swimming event, a netball tournament and a model exhibition to take place on the same day within the complex…...

From: Anthony Mallard In response to: ‘Please Help Merrow Before Somebody Dies’ Writes Resident to MP I well recall that when the chemist on the Kingpost parade at Burpham was, in all practical terms, forced to close by the opening of a pharmacy in the nearby Sainsburys. It was agreed by whatever the NHS purchasing authority, now the Surrey Heartlands Integrated Care Board (ICB) was called, that the service would be provided at…...

Five different agencies have come together to set out their plans to eliminate road collisions resulting in death or serious injury by 2050. In line with international and national best practice, a new, draft ‘Surrey RoadSafe Vision Zero’ strategy has been developed by the road safety partners: Surrey County Council; Surrey Fire and Rescue Service; National Highways; Surrey Police and the Police and Crime Commissioner....

From: Dennis Booth chairman of the Guildford Veterans' Hub The Veterans’ Hubs initiative is a great opportunity for veterans to meet in a relaxed environment and share a cup of tea and the company of others who have served. They also offer a chance to obtain advice, support and services under one roof in a friendly setting. They are a warm and welcoming place where any member of the Armed Forces community (serving and ex-service) and their families, including widows, may go for help, advice and comradeship....

From: Christine Barber In response to: Bramley Lambs Cruelly Killed by Rogue Driver I cannot express enough how angry and sickened I am by what those responsible have done. I hope Surrey Police finds them and they are punished severely. We don't need such people in our world. What do these horrible individuals get out of this? My blood is boiling. Please, please find them so they can be punished. We need a deterrent.

By Martin Giles Merrow residents requiring medication are now facing queues of 45 minutes to an hour following the closure of the Boots pharmacy in Kingfisher Drive, Merrow. Since the closure, the other Merrow Boots branch, on the Epsom Road, has been struggling to cope with the resulting extra demand on them. See interview with Angela Richardson below (apologies for poor sound quality)....

By Chris Caulfield local democracy reporter A new 11-storey tower block will join the Woking town centre skyline – although this time it’s not being funded by loans given to the now bankrupt council. Plans have been approved to demolish the existing buildings in Cleary Court, Chobham Road and parts of Christchurch Way, into an 11-storey office block with shopping and space for a cafe or gym on the ground and first floors....

From: Peter Mills In response to: Local MPs to Meet Water Regulator To Discuss Thames Water’s Performance Water regulator Ofwat needs to police Thames Water, including how they measure outages, and enforce the correct compensation payouts when they occur. As we have learned recently from the Post Office scandal, these payouts are not a valid business expense, so they hit the bottom line and reduce profitability, hopefully or likely leading to two outcomes:...

By Martin Giles Surrey Police is investigating an incident which took place overnight (17-18 January), which resulted in the death of fourteen lambs at a farm to the south-west of Bramley. A vehicle is believed to have driven onto the property, taking one gate off its hinges and "pushing through" another to run over the lambs. Police officers attended the scene this morning to carry out further enquiries while other investigating officers were trying to identify and locate those responsible....

From: David Roberts In response to: The Pros and Cons of the Re-designed Junction 10 There is something very fishy about the way The M25 Junction 10 project was approved after years of deferments by successive Transport Secretaries. Clearly there were doubts. It will now probably come in at around half a billion quid, twice the original 2014 budget. It is a scandal to spend this astronomical amount when there are so many greater calls on the public purse....

From Colin Byrne See: Will Our MP Support My Suggestions Regarding Farnborough Airport’s Plans? It has now been two weeks since I made my proposal in these pages on January 4 for a way forward on the expansion of the Farnborough Airport building and Angela Richardson's proposal that there should be more negotiations with the local community. Unfortunately, I have to report that there has been no response from our MP....

By Martin Giles Local MPs Angela Richardson and Jeremy Hunt are to meet the chief executive of water services regulation authority, Ofwat, to discuss concerns about Thames Water's performance in recent months. Ms Richardson wrote to Ofwat in November asking what measures the regulator can take to monitor Thames Water's infrastructure and ensure it increases its resilience. In its response, Mark Anderson, Ofwat's director of communications, wrote: "In our 2022-23 report on company performance, Thames Water was in the bottom category for its performance and only met 4 out of 12 of its performance commitment levels....

By Chris Caulfield local democracy reporter The failings of Surrey County Council’s children services has meant the under-fire authority paid more than £250,000 in fines, compensation, and redress payments to families it let down last year. The settlements are published by the social care ombudsman and last week it upheld three more complaints. The education watchdog found Surrey County Council continues to miss deadlines, and creates needless delays for children waiting for psychological assessments and GP advice....

By Chris Dick Will history judge Junction 10 M25 a success? Work on the new £350 million M25 junction is due for completion by Summer 2025. But will the benefits to road users, local residents and businesses outweigh the detractors’ concerns? As important, what will those living and working nearby have gained? Ockham Common has been cleared of hundreds, if not thousands of pine and silver birch trees....

From: Helen Skinner In response to: The London Road Plans Are 100 per cent Better Than What We Have Those of us who cycle regularly around the rest of Guildford avoid the cycle lanes on London Road because they are not safe. I commute 3.5 miles daily with my daughter on the back for nursery, I use a mixture of 40mph country roads, 30mph semi-urban roads, residential roads and bespoke cycle/shared infrastructure....

Five National Highways gritters were struck by other vehicles while they were out and about spreading salt last winter. Each incident left the vehicles involved with visible damage. The year before there was just one incident. Now motorists are being urged to give the gritters time and space to do their jobs as National Highways continues to treat roads this winter season, with snow forecast early this week in northern areas of the country....

From: Tony Rooth former county and borough councillor Today (January 15) is National Pothole Day. The poor condition of Britain’s local roads has led to the RAC dealing with the highest number of pothole-related breakdowns it has seen in any third quarter since it began recording this data in 2006, according to the latest data for potholes. The UK is thought to have more than one million potholes, with these road defects being one of the leading causes of car breakdowns…...

Hari joined the University in 1966, from the Lyons organisation, and was part of the pioneering team of staff responsible for launching the new Guildford campus. While originally working from an army-style field kitchen, when Senate House opened, Hari was responsible for the bars on the 3rd and 4th floor (the staff and student bars)....

Alton (0) 3, Guildford City (0) 1 By Barry Underwood In-form Alton maintained their play-off push with three late goals that killed off Guildford City’s sterling attempt to take something from the game. As so often this season City’s performance on the pitch belied their lowly league position. At the beginning of both halves Alton enjoyed territorial advantage, but each time Guildford worked their way into the game, and playing some good football, they were a match for their in-form opponents....

Surrey County Council is seeking the views of residents on the county’s Rights of Way to help drive improvements. The county council is responsible for around 2,164 miles (3,482 km) of paths known as ‘public rights of way’ in both the countryside and urban areas. Accessing these paths is, SCC says, important for residents to enjoy and explore, travel to work or school and for health and wellbeing....

From: Ben Paton In response to: Many Residents Want the London Road Scheme to Go Ahead By all means canvas the opinion of cyclists and pupils at the George Abbot school. Their opinion counts. But so also does the opinion of the thousands of other people who use and rely on this A road. It is not "scientific", logical or democratic to cite the opinion of one group of people (cyclists, say) and then ignore and implicitly discount the opinion of other groups of people....

The Post Office scandal is a shameful example of the abuse of power and it has had local ramifications. Only three miles south of Guildford, on October 10, 2017, after four years of successful trading and serving his community, the sub-postmaster at Farncombe Post Office, Chirag Sidhpura, had an unannounced visit from a Post Office auditor. He welcomed it because he felt everything was in order but by the end of the audit he was hit with a shocking alleged loss of over £57,000....
