Bánh xèo, like many traditional Vietnamese dishes should be gluten free. However, as it seems with many dishes gluten is creeping in in the form of either packet seasonings or pre-made flour mixes. It used to be very common to find gluten free bánh xèo however, more and more places are adding a bit of wheat flour to the batter.
It's one of my favourite dishes and also one I probably get messages about the most as it's such an iconic and flavoursome dish. Therefore, I have been on a mission recently to find some spots that serve it gluten free.
I was so impressed by the first location I tried, recommended to me by my friend and Tubudd buddy Giang.
This particular spot offers a choice of toppings including shrimp, pork, beef or egg. There were also combos such as pork and egg or shrimp and beef. Traditionally it's served with tiny shrimps, pork and beans sprouts so to have a variety of toppings available was intriguing.
We opted for a shrimp set, to try to keep it traditional, and a pork egg mix. Both mine and my partners favourite was definitely the pork and egg as it packed a punch with the flavour and had a great texture to it.
The location itself was on a main road but still potentially easy to miss as the building is unassuming and the eatery itself is on the second floor.
⏰Opening hours 10:30-14:00 & 16:00-21:00
📍Bánh Xèo Tôm Nhảy Thanh San
55 P. Hai Bà Trưng, Trần Hưng Đạo, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội
For those that haven't heard of this delicious dish, bánh xèo is like the Vietnamese answer to a savory pancake or some might even say a Vietnamese taco – crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and filled with goodies. Wrap it in rice paper with a selection of fresh herbs and veggies then dip it in a tangy sauce for a unique culinary experience.
