Customary Law, Social Development and Administration of Justice in Nigeria
Customary law is the law that captures the norms, traditions and rules of behaviour of the people. It is the law propelled by the worldview, beliefs, philosophies and value system of the people. In traditional societies, customary laws were largely unchallenged save by compelling innovations that re-channeled aspects of the practices of the people and subsequently altered its traditions. Since the introduction of English law in the administration of justice in Nigeria about a century ago, customary law has been fighting for breath and a large chunk of it has not survived the conflict that was the necessary outcome of the contact. This paper has discussed the nature of justice that the hybrid legal system has produced. It has answered the question whether the judicial system that yields legal justice has produced social justice as well. It has also made projections into the future of customary law and examined the imperatives of a smoother marriage of convenience between the borrowed English legal system and native law and custom so as to achieve justice that is real and answers to the needs of the society. The topic is discussed under six sub-heads, namely: Introduction; conceptual analysis; application of customary law in Nigeria; customary law and justice; customary law and arbitration; and conclusion. Under conceptual analysis, the meaning, sources and progressive development of customary law have been examined including their relationship with the English common law. On the application of customary law, the standard requirements for the validity and enforcement of the law have been discussed critically. The capacity of customary law to produce both legal and social justice has been evaluated under the sub-head of customary law and justice while the content, context and legal status of customary arbitration and customary awards have been treated under customary law and arbitration. The co-rela- tion between customary law and social development was examined and pr
Why is Jihadist Terrorism Escalating in Nigeria
While northern Nigeria is familiar with armed bandits, Boko Haram, and Fulani militants shaping an intricate triangle of terror in the region, the latter group have also been prominent in southern Nigeria—carrying out repeated invasions, killings of farmers, and kidnappings for ransom in rural and urban locations since 2016. Some of these attacks have been referred to as “the Fulanization” and “Islamization agenda,” Fulanization is a term used loosely to specifically describe Fulani militants forcefully taking over indigenous land. Fulanization implies an agenda to take over the ancestral land of indigenous communities, however, Islamization is the conversion of Nigeria from a secular state to a state governed and controlled by Islamic doctrines. In comparison, Fulanization is contextualized as a resource-based dominion agenda, but Islamization is a religiously motivated pursuit.
Use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine remains
Fears of Russian nuclear-weapon use are greatly exaggerated. We are likely no closer to Russian first use of nuclear weapons than at the end of February despite the concerns raised by US President Joe Biden in his remarks on 6 October.
Western Democracy vs China and Russia
Ten years ago, Xi Jinping ascended to national leadership in China and Vladimir Putin began his second stint as Russia’s president. Over the next decade, both have consolidated power over their countries, and today both unapologetically and jointly proclaim their autocratic, ruthless, macho rule as a more effective model of democracy,

Oil and Nigerian problem was first discovered in Oloibiri, in Nigeria's Bayelsa State, in 1956
Historic accounts depict that the thrilling search for oil in Nigeria started in 1907 when exploration rights were granted to the Nigerian Bitumen Corporation, which was a Nigerian arm of a German company; but all started at Oloibiri, well #1. Oloibiri field is an onshore oilfield located in Bayelsa State,Nigeria, about 45 miles east of Port Harcourt in the Niger Delta. Oloibiri Oilfield is named after Oloibiri, a small, remote creek community, where it is located. Oloibiri Oilfield was discovered on Sunday 15th January 1956 by Shell Darcy. Well #1 was spudded the 3 August 1955 and drilled to a depth of 12.008 feet
The well was tested and it flowed at the rate of about 5,000 barrels (790 m3) of oil per day. Fifteen wells were drilled around this discovery well within the next two years so making Oloibiri, Nigeria's first commercial oil field. Following the discovery, Shell Darcy stepped up exploration in the Niger Delta and By 1958 the company has discovered oil in twelve areas in the Niger Delta of which Oloibiri, Afam and Bomu were the most promising. Royal Dutch Shell laid the first crude oil pipeline in the country from the Oloibiri field to Port Harcourt on Bonny River to access export facilities.
Nigeria exported its first crude oil in February 1958 from the Oloibiri oil field. The last well, Oloibiri18 was drilled in April 1979, but the field was already depleted at that time and the field was abandoned the same year. The Oloibiri oilfield produced over 20 million barrels of oil during its 20 years life cycle.Oloibiri is today a serene and rustic village of the Niger delta where the old wellhead of the well

There are indications that the nation may soon start experiencing more cargo diversions to neighboring West African ports as well as an increase in freight rates due to the collapse of both Tin Can and Apapa quay aprons.
A quay is part of the port where cargo is lifted or vessels are loaded and unloaded.
In separate chats with our correspondent in Lagos, experts said that shipping companies would now be scared to berth at the affected ports, resulting in the diversion of cargoes to West African ports or a possible increase in freight charges.
A member of the Nigerian Association of Master Mariners, Adewale Ishola, said that the present condition of the quay aprons portrayed danger for incoming vessels.

United State intelligence helping Ukraine kill Russian generals, report says
Pentagon appears to confirm claims US is providing actionable information to Kyiv
US officials have reportedly confirmed they are providing intelligence that has helped Ukrainian forces target and kill many of the Russian generals who have died in the Ukraine war.
The claim in the New York Times, quoting unnamed defence officials, appears to confirm suspicions the US is supplying actionable intelligence in real time to help the Ukrainian military select high-value targets.
Appearing to confirm the claims, the Pentagon spokesperson, John Kirby, acknowledged the US was providing “Ukraine with information and intelligence that they can use to defend themselves”, although Adrienne Watson, a national security council spokesperson, said intelligence was not provided “with the intent to kill Russian generals”.
