When I was a kid growing up on Long Island, I dreamed of escaping.

I felt like an alien at home and at school.

My siblings were all substantially older.
The school I went to was dark and felt like a penitentiary.
I managed to make myself invisible enough to not get picked on too much, but I never felt safe there.

No one was at home during the day and no one was paying attention at school, so I would skip out and return home and watch television. I did this for at least a month and managed to not get caught.

One of the shows I watched was a soap opera called Another World in Somerset. I couldn't tell you what it was about now but for whatever reason this show grabbed my attention. I was maybe 13 at the time.

Just about 20 years later, I left the US and went traveling overseas, starting in England. This was my escape. I had developed an idea of traveling around with a videocamera, interviewing the people I met about how they came to be doing what they were doing. Those I was most interested in meeting were the ones who had integrated their spiritual beliefs into their lives and work in ways that I hoped anyone could relate to. I started in Glastonbury, a place I had heard about through friends who had been on their honeymoon there and had drank the water from a place caled the Chalice Well Garden. The water was said to have healing properties. I decided to start my journey there.

It was late afternoon when I got to Glastonbury. I found my way to the Chalice Well and knocked on the door to the adjacent cottage. A woman in her late 50's, with piercing blue eyes, answered the door. Her name was Willa and she was the custodian of the well.

I interviewed this woman a couple of days later. Part of that interview can be seen here in this clip of the film. The quality is not up to today's standards, but if you'd like to hear the story of how she and her husband came to be at the Well, you can see it here just after the 2 minute mark.

At some point I discovered the name of the County where Glastonbury is located is Somerset.

20 years after I'd spent my afternoons cutting school, watching that soap opera, dreaming of escaping Long Island.

It was the start of an adventure. In another world.

One of the things we look at in The Witness Circle is our responsibility for how our experience lives inside of us in the present moment. There are events from the past, still alive in our systems that continue to impact us. By exposing these stories in a group of witnesses, we can transform how we see them or let them go altogether, releasing ourselves from their grasp.
