The jazz fusion world has been eagerly awaiting the next big thing from guitarist James Morgan and his power trio project Morgan|Husband|Feraud. This group contains James Morgan on guitar, legendary drummer/keyboardist Gary Husband, and virtuoso bassist Hadrien Feraud, having made some dynamic live performances and taste-making guest spots that have turned many heads.
Their first EP release, "A Soul in Time," does anything but disappoint; the trio fuses influence from jazz, rock, and world music fluently into five ethereal original compositions.
The opening track to this album is titled "On the Edge," a song that will quickly lead the listener back to the golden age of jazz fusion. Echoes can be found here of Chick Corea's rigorous piano work, the pioneering spirit of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and the fiery guitar virtuosity of Bill Connors, Al Di Meola, and Return to Forever. The guitar is a whirlwind of meticulous phrasing and graceful improvisation, intermeshed with the dynamic drumming of Gary and the melodic bass lines of Feraud.
The second track, "A Feather's Touch," is more introspective. As Dean Brown so aptly put it, the title refers to Morgan's featherlight picking of his guitar, so beautiful was the description of the ethereal quality of this piece. The acoustic piano added a tinge of classical elegance, while Morgan's signature hollow-body guitar brought along the feeling of warmth and closeness.
"A Soul in Time," is a very reflective and humbling piece; it was written in memory of Dean Brown, the co-composer and co-producer of this album. The melancholic melody is all talk in the form of existence, with emotions such as longing and reflections well expressed through the soulful playing of the guitar by Morgan and the sensitive piano playing of Husband.
Feraud's bass lines provide an emotional anchorage that outlines depth and gravity. "Eyes of Truth" whisks you away on a heavenly journey, complexities of sound that both link the cosmic greatness of the Mahavishnu Orchestra with the futuristic soundscapes of Star Trek.
"Samba Sky" gets off the blocks immediately, imbued with an energy reminiscent of when Chick Corea, Al Di Meola, and Return to Forever were as electrically charged as three musicians possibly could be. The infectious rhythm is driven by the relentless drums, and the pulsing bass lines, while Morgan's guitar work is simply a whirlwind of fiery soloing, punctuated by some dynamic percussion.
In "A Soul in Time," Morgan, Husband, and Feraud offer a genre-leaping masterpiece, both musically expansive and emotionally deep. "A Soul in Time" is no less than a defining moment, setting a new peak that other artists will reach for.
Stream "A Soul in Time" on all major platforms today and be a part of this journey of musical discovery. You can also follow James Morgan, Gary Husband, and Hadrien Feraud online to stay up to date on upcoming performances and new releases.

B. Christopher just did a Q&A with a cool blue site about the new album and a few other things music related. There is a link below for those that may be interested in reading it. When asked about his hope for the future of music he responded with...

"In terms of the future, my hope for music is renewed whenever I see a kid with an electric guitar, dirty converse high top sneakers and a smirk. It has to be all three of those ingredients. Two of them isn't enough. It doesn't matter to me what kind of music the kid is interested in. Seeing that kid starting the journey warms my heart. I hope that kid has some fight in him and sees it through!"

There you have it! Some things are just timeless.

Artist: Misty Blues
Album: I’m Too Old For Games: A Live Tribute A Odetta
Release: 2024
Website: https://www.mistybluesband.com/

Misty Blues continues along the road of high quality releases at a breakneck pace with the latest live recording " I’m Too Old For Games: A Live Tribute A Odetta". It would take a real effort to find a band that works harder than this band to provide the audience with fresh music on what seems to be almost a quarterly basis. It is not only the pace of which they produce new albums, but the quality of them that is so impressive. This latest live set which is the second installment in a tribute to the great Odetta is certainly no exception. If anything, it may be their best work to date!

Misty Blues is clearly dialed into one another as musicians as well the interest of their audience. That is a balance that is never easy to achieve, but the joy that comes through the recording is contagious at every turn. Odetta is a steep order that Misty Blues seems to fill quite effortlessly. It is a wonderful thing to hear this band recorded in the live atmosphere making me wish I was there for the performances!

The first single Hold On simply put is special on every level. The power of Gina Coleman's vocal performance is difficult to put into words. When one is moving as much air as she is, beauty isn't always what comes across, however this cut is an exception. She is maintaining power and grace in the way that perhaps one would hear in opera. If there were a blues opera, this would be it. The brute force and subtleties are equally dispersed making for an extraordinary performance.

Jim Crow Blues is a smooth sizzle that is burning red hot on a low flame. Misty Blues is always an ensemble effort that distributes the spotlight generously amongst all the players and this track is a shining example of it. They are one of those bands that the sum is greater than its parts. A rare find, but always consistent in bands that have that special chemistry. Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band comes to mind. Not stylistically, but the chemical reaction of Bruce, Clarence, Little Steven and the rest. It is a gas and matches type reaction that cannot be manufactured, only discovered.

A mid tempo shuffle is always a soft spot for this writer and Weepin' Willow Blues scratches that itch perfectly. Another cut that everyone has space to shine and then seamlessly falls back into the mix to support the greater good, the song itself. This band approaches the music in a refined and mature manner but still has the bounce of young people just discovering the power of live music. They flow like a meticulously choreographed ballet, but are still in the moment where the dance and the dancer are no longer discernible. That space where movement and sound come together to create art.

I’m Too Old For Games: A Live Tribute A Odetta is an exceptional live recording of an exceptional group of musicians. As I have written in a previous review, nobody and I mean nobody sounds like Misty Blues. They are 100% committed to their sound and vision. It is a testament to what blues and roots music can be when executed without thought of imitation. When a band finds their own space there is truly nobody to compare it too. I imagine there have been thousands of great blues bands from all over the world in the last 75 years, but only a handful that truly have their own fingerprint that is unmistakable to even the most casual listeners. Misty Blues is one of them and this record is my favorite of their many quality releases.

Check out this great review of the latest single from Misty Blues "Hold On" from The Blues PowR Blog!

"We probably haven’t paid as much attention to the Massachusetts band Misty Blues in recent years as we should have, but that doesn’t mean we need to keep living with that mistake! Here’s the latest single from the band from their upcoming album I’m Too Old for Games, the second in a series of recordings of live tributes to folk and blues great Odetta.

Although always a powerful song, the band takes it to a whole ‘nother level here, with vocalist Gina Coleman digging deep in the gravel almost from the start, balanced by some delicate violin, piano, guitar and sax from her colleagues.

We can’t blame you if you find yourself unable to hold off in tracking down more music from the band after hearing this one! Although the new album, which will include such other gems as “Weepin’ Willow Blues” and “Alabama Bound,” isn’t due out until early next month, you can at least check out the band’s first live tribute album to Odetta, Tell Me Who You Are, along with more than a dozen of other albums in the meantime!"

Misty Blues – Silver LiningGuitar One Recordswww.mistybluesband.com11 songs – 43 minutes

A classy and sassy horn band based out of the northwest corner of Massachusetts, Misty Blues have been dazzling audiences their own special brand of horn-drenched, jazz-tinged music for the past 25 years. And they celebrate both their longevity and success with this dynamic set, which is guaranteed to grab you from the opening notes. The group is led by the powerful and dynamic Gina Coleman, a smoky alto who doubles on cigar-box guitar when not serving as the associate admissions director at Williams College in bucolic Williamstown, where the band’s based. And two of her bandmates are involved in teaching in one way or another, too.A group of seasoned professionals, multi-instrumentalist Rob Tatten handles drums, trumpet and trombone while serving as a music educator in the Pittsfield, Mass., school system while Aaron Dean, the saxophonist, is a school superintendent who plays frequently with several of the top jazz players in the Northeast. They’re joined by bassist/trumpet player Bill Patriquin, a Navy veteran and who’s worked in bands around the globe, Seth Fleischmann, a guitarist with degrees in performance and audio engineering, and Diego Mongue, Gina’s son, who handles drums, bass, guitar and pedal steel. A recording artist in his own right despite still being a Williams student, he and the Diego Mongue Band made it to the semi-finals of the 2024 International Blues Challenge.Early Times sits in on guitar for one tune and keyboard player Matt Casson appears on another. They’re augmented by keyboard players Joel Nicholas and David Vittone, guitarists Cameron Bencivenga and Chase Bradshaw, harp player Ed Moran, trumpet player Jeff Stevens, percussionist Three Trees and vocalists Chantell McFarland, Wendy Lipp, Matt Mervis, Rebecca Mattson and Kathy Ryan.An autobiographical effort that includes lush arrangements and deep lyrics, this disc will strike home for anyone who’s experienced the ups and downs of a lifetime of work, whether it’s on the job or on stage. “Seduction by Blues” takes listeners back to the root with a solitary, minor-key harp line before Gina joins in for a hypnotic opener as the tension builds. Then the full band joins in to finish the number instrumentally and elevates the pressure even more. The mood brightens with the percussive “Silver Lining,” which features Early Times and deals with suggestions that things aren’t that bad even though Coleman relates a laundry list of troubles. “You can keep that silver lining to someone else,” she says. “I don’t want to hear your pearls of wisdom. Keep it to yourself!” An extended, fiery guitar and horn solo drives the message home. Drums and keys open “The Upper Hand” as Gina complains about the way she’s been treated after giving a friend shelter from his/her storm before the spirited “Shake These Blues” makes everything upbeat even though it speaks deals with recovery from a broken love affair. The minor-key “Sofrito My Blues” opens quietly to follow but quickly picks up intensity as it describes trouble amidst the joy at a Latin market before yielding to a true-blue pleaser in the compelling “Enough Lovin’ for Two,” which gives the band a chance to work out atop a steady, propulsive beat. Up next, the introspective and haunting “How Will I” finds Coleman lost in the middle of nowhere and wondering how she’ll find her path to get out as her bandmates keep the tension high while giving her the space to let her voice fly. Resolution comes in “That’s My Cross,” which admits more of life’s blunders atop with a positive spin. The next number, “Nothing in Vain,” is subtitled “Steve Beastie’s song” and dedicated to the deejay from Britain’s Voodoo Radio Online. An ardent supporter and friend of Misty Blues, he lost his life after a battle with cancer last winter only a few months after seeing the band in person. Containing an unmistakable gospel element, the tune celebrates him in the best way possible, noting: “These blues are here to sustain you, these blues cast off the pain…”Fear not, though! Joy abounds in the jazz-infuses “Chasing Gold,” which sings about the futility of chasing fortune and fame and accepting what you’ve got. Cusson’s featured on a stellar mid-tune solo and the horns are high in the mix throughout. The disc concludes with “Blues Never Ends,” a number that mirrors the opening and includes participation from Diego’s full band.Misty Blues is one of the most consistent, unique groups on the scene today, and this album shines throughout. If you're tired of "the same old blues," this one's like a breath of fresh air!
