There are lots of scenes of violence to be shared from Jennifer's Body. This scene isn't one of them. We chose to share this moment that happens just after Jennifer has been possessed by the succubus and has killed her first victim (And therefore..."full"). She exudes confidence and elation, and it is noticeably off-putting to our protagonist, Needy. Needy is, for lack of a better word, us. She is the audience. She is Jennifer's alter ego. She is the insecurity of adolescence and the reserved behavior of "good manners".

The dialogue in the scene is indicative of Diablo Cody's style, and shows what is actually the most important part of this movie: The sometimes bumpy but often co-dependent friendships of adolescence.

Goodness gracious. What a find here. Diablo Cody discusses the test screenings and marketing failures for Jennifer's Body, in which all of the recruited screeners were young men, an audience that this movie wasn't designed for. People who roll their eyes at the word "representation" should heed this. The studio screwed themselves and the filmmakers out of a financial win with this movie.

Staff Picks for this week!!!!

James has picked Jason Reitman's 2007 film, Juno. This movie was penned by Diablo Cody, the screenwriter of this week's film. He felt that since Jennifer's Body didn't get the appreciation at the box office that it deserved, we should give a nod to Diablo Cody's ability to turn a phrase!

Lowery has chosen the 1975 Al Pacino/John Cazale film, Dog Day Afternoon. This movie, directed by Sidney Lumet, presents Pacino's and Cazale's characters as unlikely bank robbers in a caper gone wrong.

This week's film, Jennifer's Body, is an interesting case of well-crafted filmmaking doomed by terrible marketing. James and Lowery agree that this movie hasn't received its due, as it deals with some pretty sophisticated and underrepresented material wrapped in an effective and funny horror story.

One of our recent commenters posted a great gif of Bill Paxton as Severen, and we immediately thought of this clip. Caleb has just been shot in the belly by the bartender in "Sh*tkicker Heaven Bar". Severen extracts his payback with a jangly spur on the bartop. This scene is one of the big set pieces in Near Dark where we see the "family" in action.

Enjoy the US trailer for Kathryn Bigelow's Neo-Western Vampire movie, Near Dark. This one is a favorite of ours, and arguably the best film we've discussed on the podcast yet. Near Dark is the second of our four film series on horror movies directed by women. This film was Kathryn Biegelow's solo directorial debut.

Bigelow wanted to cast her film with a group of actors who would naturally feel like a "family." At the suggestion of her friend, and future husband James Cameron, Bigelow cast three actors from Cameron's film ALIENS. Lance Henrickson, Jeanine Zimmerman and Bill Paxton had just worked together on Aliens for several months. The result of this casting decision is clear on the screen. When Bill Paxton's character, Severen, says "Listen to your mama now."....We know that Zimmerman is the mother of the "family."

Our staff picks this week are a pair of very different films.

James decided to offer up another movie directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the 1995 sci-fi Strange Days. It was an ambitious film with a great cast that did terribly at the box office. Right up James' alley!

Lowery selected Billy Wilder's 1951 film, Ace in the Hole. This noir film, starring Kirk Douglas as a hard-boiled newspaper reporter, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Story and resides on many lists of the "greatest films of all time"
