Four Turns Press Where to find info on books by D.S. Ferris D.S. Ferris is the pen name for Gwendolyn Wilkins. The "D" and "S" stand for: "Dawn" and "Sroka" respectively.

Since Gwen works in the medical field and may have her name attached to medical papers at some future point, she writes fiction under a pseudonym to avoid confusion. Dawn being a name she's been called randomly throughout her life. Decided to just run with it. Sroka is a family name on her father's side
Ferris is a family name on her mother's side

My editor for "The Vampire's Daughter" finally got her first round of edits to me, complete with a 30+ page letter breaking down her thoughts on the characters, story arc, conflict, etc.

Got a lot of work ahead of me, but so excited! We're finally moving forward :)

Debating whether or not to get a PO Box or a virtual address for Four Turns Press. That way I could actually put a contact address on the copyright page of future books rather than just a website. Since this is a DBA and not an LLC, I have a fair amount of freedom when it comes to address options.

Virtual addresses are rather nice because you can pick any city you like and you get an actual street address. You can view the outside of the each envelope through an app; but if you want to do literally anything else with your mail, it'll cost you.
Want to see a scan of the piece of mail? Here's the fee. Want the mail shredded? That'll cost you. Want it forwarded to you? Yeah, here's the shipping cost. Etcetera, etcetera

PO Box is far cheaper; and though I'd have to pick one closer to home for ease of access, there's enough towns in my region to choose from. Plus some of the larger post offices offer the ability to have a real street address so it's not quite as generic as a PO Box.

Ah, the joys of overthinking things...

The opening to The Kai'us Planet has given me nearly as much trouble as the ending. Fortunately I've always had a good and solid starting point, it's just been a matter of *how* to drop the reader into the story.

Many previous attempts have only made it a couple paragraphs deep. I've also tried in the past to insert some conflict between characters for a little tension, but it's always come across as juvenile.

This latest version is already 600+ words in (not much, I know, but I haven't had an opening this long since the NaNoWri edit!) and it's looking like I've *finally* got it.

Now to fill it out, attach it to the parts I already have and try to push this thing to that fabled finish line :)

It's rather humorous getting junk mail for banking and insurance options for my new "business". This DBA is just a name that I can use under "publisher" when these books get published.
But it *is* really fun seeing this name on mailings :)

I know it's waaaay early, these books aren't going to be available until later this year, but I'm just too excited!!!
Here's the (not final, but close) cover art for the two books I'll be publishing :)

*squee!*
Cover art for both books has been approved!!
Both need some minor tweaking, so I won't share them at present (unless folks *want* to see them in a WIP state)
It looks like I'll be doing the full-spread layouts, which is probably for the best as I'll be able to make little tweaks to wording and layout easily without back and forth with the artists.

So exciting!!

Self-publishing woes: I've hired separate artists for the Tree Mage and vampire stories. The artist for the Tree Mage story is an absolute perfect fit. We'll have the design firmed up and done likely by the end of next week, yeah! (Annoying that that book won't be out till this fall-ish, but whatev's)

The artist for the vampire story isn't quite getting the I'm looking for. He's got a whole "Queen of the Damned" vibe going and it's like "Dude, Regency era England. She's not even the vampire. Dial it back a bit..."
*sigh*, if he doesn't get it on the next round, I'm going to have to go looking elsewhere for that cover. (Don't want to use the Tree Mage guy; his style is just too cute!)

Current projects: I'm working to self-publish two books this year.
One being a YA high fantasy novella called "Cera's Choice".
Currently have a cover artist and a tentative editor.
Looking to release it this fall.

The second is a Regency-Era thriller/horror vampire story called "The Vampire's Daughter".
Have a cover artist and a locked-in editor for that one.
Hoping to release that one this summer :)

Both books will be released first in paperback and e-book format, with a hardcover option hopefully coming soon after.
An audio book version of each is also slated for production.
