San Francisco Drag Laureate D’Arcy Drollinger talks about the perspective to be gained by blowing up masculine and feminine identities, and how he’s creating an Oasis for the art form (Part 2 of a two-part interview with Eric Jansen of “Out In The Bay” outinthbay.org ).

D'Arcy Drollinger is blazing a new role as the world's first Drag Laureate. Just a year in, she's already made steps toward a Drag Mall and a yearly "Day of Drag." On Out In The Bay's latest podcast, we hear some of her performances and Drollinger shares how she crafted the role. We also discuss the intense politics around drag and why it's become such a cultural flashpoint. https://www.outinthebay.org/worlds-first-drag-laureate-shares-art-joy-politics-of-drag/ Porfirio Rangel co-produced.
SF Oasis D'Arcy Drollinger
This will air on KALW's Q***r Power Hour June 6, but why wait? Enjoy it now!

A yearly "Day of Drag" and a Drag Mall? While many states are restricting drag, San Francisco Drag Laureate D'Arcy Drollinger is spreading the humor and "sparkle" of drag to make positive change in the world.

What do you want to know about Drag Laureates? Tomorrow I'm interviewing San Francisco's - and the world's! - first Drag Laureate. Like a Poet Laureate, but elevates appreciation of drag performance rather than poetry. Got a comment or question? Please send! (Don’t be shy, anything goes and I won't use your name - unless you'd like me to😉) I'd especially like questions or comments from outside our San Francisco bubble. But all are considered!

Got Time for a Q***r Quickie?

Out in the Bay invites submissions for short audio “quickies” to fill out our Q***r Power Hours (working title) that start in January. Opinion pieces, perspectives, reflections on life experience, etc. of 1 minute to 4 or 5 minutes in length. Can include music – in fact, short musician features would be great! These are open to all - i.e. contributor doesn’t need to be q***r - as long as they refer to LGBTQIA+ life in some way.
For example, humorous or poignant coming-out moments/ experiences are often interesting, whether in families, among friends or on the job - any setting. Intersectional perspectives
about q***rness and race, religion, (dis)ability, etc.
Intergenerational perspectives would be interesting too. e.g.: What have you learned from q***r people older or younger than you? What are the best, and the most difficult aspects of relating with people of another age than yours?
They don't need to by fancy or highly produced. You could just record as a voice memo on your phone. But if you wanna get fancy, great, knock your socks off, and ours too!
If interested, email your audio submission to [email protected]. Want to know more first? Send your questions the same way ❤️ Or post in comments or DM us here.
Love and Happy Holidaze from us Out In The Bay folks!

Growing up, we all got messages about the "right" and "wrong" way to love.

And if your love doesn't match what you see, it can take some time to figure out what you want, what you need, and what you deserve.

Julian, a local non-monogamous gay man, speaks about that — and the joy of self-discovery! — in our latest episode: https://www.outinthebay.org/wrestling-with-monogamy

Author Dwayne A Ratleff's first novel, "Dancing to the Lyrics: Finding an Inner Rhythm," shares truths that never made it onto news broadcasts of the 1960s.

Ratleff based the book on his life, partly to be sure there was a record of what really happened — for himself, for his family, and for the history books.
