“In order to make improvements to any process, you must first listen and understand the current state, as well as what challenges are presented, what changes the team would like to see made, and what an ideal future state looks like,” shares Madison Danen, Industrial Engineer
Eirini Dimitroula, Director of Network Operations Evolution, urges future women engineers to “start with the end in mind, and don’t be afraid to think big.’’
“Persistence and having the right tools are key to meeting this challenge and uncovering the right information. Asking the right questions and documenting everything is also crucial for overcoming the uncertainty,” shares Abigail Josephsen, Cyber Security Data Scientist.

The year 2023 saw a significant rise of 24% in commercial air travel. Although the aviation industry plays a large role in producing CO2 emissions, a large amount of these emissions can be reduced by addressing inefficiencies.

It's safe to say that not only were our minds blown away by the Viasat Beyond: Space presentations we watched today, but so were the judges! 🤩 Five of the brightest young 16-17-year-olds presented their ideas on space sustainability. What was particularly striking was not just their enthusiasm and creative solutions, but also the prevailing lack of knowledge about this problem, as all the finalists emphasized the urgency of raising global awareness before it becomes too late. 🛰️🚀 Huge thanks to our judges Ray Fielding (UK Space Agency), Katherine Mathieson (Royal Institution of Great Britain), Steven Fisher (UK Ministry of Defence), Camille Bergin (The Galactic Gal) and Mark D. 👋 Meet Isabella — one of five Viasat Beyond: Space finalists competing in our UK STEM innovation competition later this week. Isabella grew up wanting to work in space. She thought that the only way to do that was to get a PhD and do research. But after participating in this competition, she realized that there are many other ways to work in space, including aerospace engineering, product design, and government policy. She’s now excited about the prospect of building a career in the industry! Her submission promotes sustainability in space by collecting and storing existing space junk and preventing new junk from entering orbit. These ideas encompass technical, design, and policy aspects. 👋 Meet Krish — one of five Viasat Beyond: Space finalists competing in our UK STEM innovation competition. Krish is a passionate and driven high school student with a knack for math, engineering, and robotics. He’s involved in a number of extracurricular activities, including serving as chair of his school’s math and engineering society, and is a member of the student council and robotics team. Krish plans on studying engineering in college, with a focus on aerospace or design. 📚🎓 He entered the Viasat UK STEM competition because it was a chance to combine his interests and share his ideas with the industry. Through the competition, Krish has developed a deeper understanding of the space industry and is now considering a career in the field.
