One little milestone I’ve been through with Marlowe recently is developing a self-care routine to set her up for success and good habits. 🙌🏻

I watched my own Mother performing her skincare routine as a little girl, and it opened my eyes to not only caring for your skin (and hair) as you approach womanhood but also to developing a self-care routine that is a little moment in your day for only you. It’s a moment to physically care for yourself and internalize that you are worth that time and energy.

I had started noticing Marlowe’s skin changing a bit, and breaking out here and there from new oils and dirt that wasn’t getting washed away. I realized that her simple “splash water on it” habit wasn’t going to cut it anymore, and I thought it was the perfect timing to introduce a super simple (and age-appropriate) skincare routine for her and to set up her bathroom for her “big girl” years…

Gah! It’s already back-to-school time for the kiddos! Where has the summer gone?! 😱I’ve now been sending kids to school for almost a decade, and I’ve definitely learned a thing or two along the way.

For example, I used to make sure we were back in town at least a week before the first day of school…now we literally drive back from vacation the morning of Meet The Teacher sometimes. 😂 But it’s true that there is only so much preparation you can do. A lot of it comes on the job, as they say, and getting the kids set with clothes and shoes that fit them, quality backpacks and lunch bags, tricks to keep them organized, and some fun accessories that give them a little flair– that’s what I can do as a Mom in terms of preparation.

This year, I have a child in their last year of preschool, a second grader, and a child in their last year of elementary school! It feels like the beginning of the end of an era for sure. Whereas this time last year, the Bigs were SO nervous as they prepared to enter a brand new school for the first time, this year they are counting down the days to see their friends and favorite teachers again. It’s amazing how much self-growth, confidence, and actual bodily growth can happen in just a year with kids. 🥹

One of the things that makes me cringe the most when I’m parenting my kids is when I have to reel in their joy or stop the fun for a lame reason.

We’ve all been there: “Be careful!”, “Don’t sit there”, “Watch out for the furniture!”, “Wash your hands first”, “DON’T TOUCH THAT”. 🙃🫠

I want our home, and my furniture, to be a place where my kids can let their imagination roam. They can crawl all over it, jump on it, build forts with it, cuddle on it, spend their sick days draped over it, and not feel like they’re doing something wrong just by, well, LIVING… in the Living Room. 😆

I didn’t launch The Happily Eva After Collection for because I had a ton of free time I was trying to fill up (I actually have pretty much the opposite of that. 😂), but because I really believe in the unbelievable craftsmanship of this furniture. The type of craftsmanship that families deserve. Not to mention the impressive array of performance fabrics that actually stand up to families and resist staining. This week, five years ago, I was getting home from a vacation in Italy and finding out I was pregnant with Mateo. The hardest year of my life followed.

This week, today, I sent my amazing three kids off for a vacation with their dad and his new partner. The kids are spending a fun filled week with family, and I am spending a restorative week with my new husband. Life isn’t good, life is GREAT 😊

If I’m being really really honest with you, I don’t think I ever expected to feel this happy and content. Happiness doesn’t just happen to you, you have to work so hard in ways you didn’t expect to get the true happiness. The deep down kind…the calm nervous system.

If you’re in the hard part, keep going. Go through it. Lead with love. Forgive them, forgive yourself. Learn. Ask for help. Work through resentments. Find new things to like about yourself. Laugh a lot. Prioritize sleep. Move your body every day. Keeping moving until you’ve moved so far forward that you look back and you see that everything is beautiful ♥️

Slippery knots ♥️🪢🌧️♾️ It’s hard to put into words what Saturday was like other than just saying “magical”. The rain was uninvited…but perfect. We were surrounded by so much love. The day felt like time stood still for us. Joy was abundant. So many happy tears 🥹 Our families came together into a perfectly imperfect blended bubble of love and memories. We laughed so so much. We danced. Renewal was in the air.

Ian, Marlowe, Major, and Mateo: I am yours always. There is nothing that makes me happier than belonging to the four of you.

And to my magical husband: you are my deepest wish, granted. Forever starts now!!!!!!

Thank you to our friends and family for being our community and traveling from near and far to support us in this meaningful commitment.

We are so mercifully close to the end of the school year, and although there is nothing about this month that’s going to “slow down” for our family after school is out for the summer (hi, wedding 👰‍♀️💒🤵‍♂️), I do feel such a weight being lifted in our household.

The truth is, for me personally, I find the repetition of school year routines, activities, homework, etc to be so stressful. I find it brings out the worst part of my Type A-ness and makes me extremely task-oriented with my kids (and grumpy at times!) instead of really experiencing them in the moment. I wind up feeling like I’m not doing “enough” somehow for my kids even tho they do more “things” every week than I did!

There’s always a lot of chaos that ensues in the summer with three kids, but I’m just so excited for what also comes with that: those later summer nights when I don’t have to nag anyone about homework, pack snacks and lunch, or remember what spirit day it is (and then feel guilty that I probably didn’t do it right 🤪😬). I’m excited to play days by ear a lot more, and try new things as a family.

It’s strange for a Type A that I find routine so soul crushing but I really do! Maybe it’s the Pisces in me?

I know I wasn’t the only woman who waited with bated breath for The Tortured Poet’s Department to drop, thinking it was a Joe Alwyn breakup album. I anticipated a full run of songs detailing the complicated and sad demise of a long-term love. I knew what I expected, and I was ready. I thought there would be some songs that I could relate to as a divorced woman who put a lot into my marriage and was devastated when it didn’t last.

But, as I listened to the album for the first time, something felt off. This wasn’t a Joe breakup album at all. This was a furious recounting of a woman scorned. And who was she scorned by? A tortured Poet, an on-again off-again “Situationship”, a Twin Flame who burned her badly. THE Taylor Swift had been ghosted by somebody she gave a second chance to. I was shocked. We all were. The man she had written almost 32 songs about had seemed to the public like a brief fling she cast aside almost as soon as the affair began.

As I listened more to the album, I realized that this all sounded eerily familiar. I leaned in closer, with millions of other women, as we heard Taylor recount an experience far too many of us have had. Because, unfortunately, most of us have dated a Matty Healy. Not THE Matty Healy, of course, but that same cartoon character. The misunderstood artist, The viper with bedroom eyes, The best friend who needs you to fix him, the Broken Doll. Or, why don’t I speak for myself now: I DATED HIM. And I’ll tell you something I didn’t know until years later: the disappointment of him saved my life.…

Mother’s Day, aka my personal Super Bowl, is just around the corner! I know I’m not the only Mom who both intrinsically understands that EVERY damn day is in fact Mother’s Day, yet also counts down the days until Mother’s Day like we’ll never have another one. 😂 Is Mother’s Day better than Christmas? Well, it’s quite nice to have a whole day when it’s expected that everyone worship you, is it not? There’s also something so special about celebrating a birthday-level holiday in tandem with other women. I don’t know about you, but I generally like doing anything at all in groups with other women…so to have a day when I can just walk down the street, see other women with their kids, and wish them a Happy Mother’s Day, just feels like the collective hum of energy I need in my life. I love the overall sentiment of warmth and belonging.

And for exactly those same reasons, Mother’s Day can feel like the worst and loneliest day in the world for some people. And that is also so valid and so important to acknowledge.

Whether it’s because of estrangement from one’s own family member, because of a Mom who has passed, or because of one’s own yearning to become a Mother, this day can represent so much pain.

It’s ok to check out from social media, and from any other avenues that make you feel bad or less than on Mother’s Day. I certainly wouldn’t blame you. I consider these kind of boundaries to be one of the purest forms of self-love in the face of heartache. Those of you who are in that boat this year (or every year), I see you and I send you so much love. ❤️‍🩹

I also want to acknowledge the Bonus Moms, Stepmoms, and anybody who Mothers others. All the nannies and caretakers, the teachers, coaches, and administrators who love others’ children as their own. The women who make it their life’s work to protect and honor our society’s most vulnerable and beautiful members as they grow into the people who will one day protect and guide us all. It is a beautiful thing to open your heart to somebody by choice. You are so valued and so appreciated.👏🏼
