🚨🚨 NEW EPISODE ALERT 🚨🚨

In this episode, Jonathan, our resident badass educator and organizer, walks us through those early experiences as young first or second-generation immigrant students in schools across the South. As we reflect on what the experience was for us, the failures and opportunities, we also take the time to dream of the possibilities that our future students deserve in order to get a quality and holistic education that values the entirety of their identities and talents.

🚨🚨 NEW EPISODE ALERT 🚨🚨

In this episode, Allison has us look at our history and where it gets displayed. Our storytellers tackle the significance of feeling visible or left out by our public history. What it meant to be a nerdy kid that loved museums but did not necessarily grow up with the resources to visit all the time.

A few weeks ago, one of our team members attended, "(re)Connection: Undocumented Filmmakers Collective - Screening and Panel" in Denver. Check out what she had to say:

Denver welcomed our projects with such warmth and open arms. Our moderator (Diego Estrada Bernuy) asked really great questions and I was actually caught off guard by him because of the type of questions he asked. I felt so seen by his intentionality and the amount of research he did on Nuestro South. The environment and energy made it so easy to talk about our production process in a way I hadn’t before. Before the panel and screening, I was really intimidated and nervous because this was our first time taking Nuestro South into the big screen let alone outside of the South which meant people outside of our target audience got a feel for the love we put into Season 2. To my surprise, many of those present resonated in one way or another with bits and pieces of our discussion and topics covered in the first episode. All that to say, thank you Denver! You were amazing. Thank you to the Undocumented Filmmakers Collective for giving me the space to showcase this to a live audience, and thank you Nuestro South. I couldn’t be more proud of our Nuestro South Team, specially Antonio, Keyla, Axel and Erik for helping me get to the finish line."

We're happy to introduce our final cohort member, Nancy!

Read more about her below:

"Nancy will attend UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall and plans to major in sociology and public policy. Having grown up in rural North Carolina, she has navigated through her academic journey as a first-gen student while also learning about her community’s social and economic challenges. Such inaccessibility to basic resources for the Latine community, especially disparities in education and healthcare, has driven her activism. However, due to this lack of available resources, she has learned to take full advantage of what she did have at reach, so, thanks to her upbringing, she advocates with the tool she knows best—her voice. She turned to write when she didn’t feel strong enough to speak, and, by sharing her own stories through spoken word, she hopes not to be a voice for others but to inspire others to speak up. Her voice has helped her become a member-at-large on the North Carolina’s Governor’s Advisory Council for Hispanic/Latino Affairs, a platform that allows her to advocate for future Latine generations. She dreams of using positions like this to foster inclusive spaces where everyone can feel empowered because we are here to stay."

We're so happy to have you on the team Nancy!

We're back with another one of our 2022 Storytellers! We'd like to introduce everyone to Karina!

Here is a little bit more about Karina:

"She earned her BS in Biology, BA in Global Health, and a certificate in Latinx Studies in the Global South at Duke University. She has worked extensively in researching Latinx immigrant and women’s health disparities. Her upbringing in Burlington NC/ Alamance County set at the intersection of Indigeneity, immigration, and Latinidad has influenced her passion for Latinx health and education equity efforts, her Indigenous Purépecha culture preservation, and intersectional feminism. Karina hopes to one day serve her Latinx community by providing medical services as a bicultural primary care physician and establishing a bicultural free-clinic catering to Latinx immigrants in Alamance County."

We're excited to introduce our second 2022 Story Academy cohort member, Allison Delgado! Here is a little bit about Allison:

"Hola! I’m Allison Delgado, currently a high school student in North Carolina. In my free time, I enjoy reading, improving my understanding of languages, and learning new recipes! Often, I find myself enjoying the process more than the end result, which can vary from an irredeemable mess to a satisfying meal. Some of my favorite stories are those that include characters developing and evolving throughout them, and I am excited to see how I change during this program. I look forward to working with everyone and being a part of Nuestro South’s Story Academy!"

We're excited to introduce our first 2022 Story Academy cohort member, Victoria Garcia! Here is a little bit about Victoria:

"She got her BFA in Graphic Design at the Art Institute of Atlanta and has been working in the creative industry for the last nine years. Her upbringing in Atlanta’s "International Village", or Buford Highway, has led her to have a personal focus on the intersection of art and activism. She’s passionate about the arts, cultural preservation, local and oral histories, class solidarity, and documenting her rapidly-changing neighborhood through analog photography and collage. She dreams of one day helping to create a Buford Highway community arts center, and for a world where we are all guaranteed housing, food, education, healthcare, and protection, regardless of immigration status — so that the many diasporas who make up our community are given the chance to plant roots and create home here."
