The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has confirmed the restoration of voice and data services following disruptions caused by undersea cable cuts. The cuts, which occurred on March 14 on the coasts of Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, significantly impacted data and voice services.

Dr Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, announced that services have been restored to approximately 90% of their peak utilization capacities. He added that all operators affected by the cuts have taken recovery capacity from submarine cables not impacted by the cuts.

Mobile network operators (MNOs) have assured the commission that data and voice services will operate optimally, pending full repairs of the undersea cables. They have activated alternative connectivities to normalize the situation.

Dr Muoka extended appreciation to telecom consumers for their patience and understanding during the downtime caused by the undersea fibre cuts.

A potential scarcity of e-passport booklets is looming due to the non-payment of a significant production debt to vendors and stakeholders in the travel document’s value chain. The Federal Government’s monthly deduction of 50% from the income paid into the Nigeria Immigration Service’s (NIS) Treasury Single Account (TSA) from passport sales is exacerbating the situation.

An anonymous source at the NIS headquarters revealed that the government, which regards the money as net income, takes out 50% before the income drops, leaving the NIS with insufficient funds to service their vendors and stakeholders involved in the passport production process.

The officer confirmed a current shortage of the 32-page booklets across the 48 passport-issuing outlets outside Nigeria and the 44 outlets in the country. However, there is an excess of the 64-page booklets, but the demand for it is very low.

The Federal Government has initiated a nationwide mass metering project, starting with the Nigerian army formations. The project, part of President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, aims to end estimated billings in the power sector.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced the commencement of the project at the 9th Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Ikeja military cantonment. The project, which will be executed in phases, has an initial budget of N12.7 billion.

Bandits stormed the LEA Primary School in Kutiga, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, abducting approximately 100 pupils and the head teacher. The incident, which occurred at 8:20 am on Thursday, caused pandemonium as pupils fled their classrooms upon sighting the bandits.

Eyewitnesses reported that the abducted victims were marched into the forest. One pupil was also shot during the invasion. The exact number of abductees remains unconfirmed, but residents estimate it to be around 100.

Michael Novogratz, CEO of Galaxy Investment Partners, commented on this trend, saying, “Baby boomers own most of the wealth in America and they’re getting their first easy access to Bitcoin and you’re seeing it through these ETFs.”

This development has allowed less tech-savvy boomers to have better access to buy and track Bitcoin, leading to a shift in retirement fund investments from traditional stock exchanges to cryptocurrency.

The Lagos State government, in collaboration with Success Box, has awarded N2 million to outstanding students in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Prosecutor Mrs. Bilikisu Buhari informed Justice Isaac Dipeolu of the situation, leading to the case’s adjournment until May 30. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Naira Marley on charges bordering on cybercrime, alleging that he and his accomplices used different Access Bank ATM cards to defraud victims.

The singer, known for his hit song “Am I a Yahoo Boy,” pleaded not guilty when arraigned on May 20, 2019, before Justice Nicholas Oweibo. The case was later transferred to Justice Dipeolu following Justice Oweibo’s transfer out of the Lagos division of the court.

In a bid to support Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the Federal Government has handed over 200 refurbished stores to 400 entrepreneurs at the Asero Adire market in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Vice President Kashim Shettima announced this initiative at the second edition of the Expanded National MSME Clinics in Abeokuta.

The beneficiaries will use the stores free of charge for a year, after which they will be charged discounted rates. “This journey further reinforces my conviction that our paramount responsibility as a government is to persist in crafting an enabling environment that allows these small businesses not only to thrive but also to expand their horizons,” Shettima said.

The Vice President also commissioned two projects – an ultra-modern fashion hub for MSMEs and the refurbished Asero Adire market. This initiative is part of the Tinubu administration’s efforts to foster an ecosystem where innovation flourishes and the entrepreneurial spirit of Nigeria shines brightly on the global stage.
