In this episode, we cover the important work that the Blue Ridge Abortion Fund does to provide financial access to safe abortions in Virginia. We welcome Tannis Fuller, the co-director of BRAF, to discuss how abortion and personal finance are deeply intertwined.

We want to ask you, our listeners, to consider the impact that abortion funds have on you and your community. If this is a service you value and you want to see women continue to have access to critical healthcare including abortions, we invite you to become supporter of the Blue Ridge Abortion Fund or find an abortion aid network near you.

When you make that donation, put out your yard sign, or host a fundraiser, please remember that last year, BRAF served 1,865 callers and that number will only grow as the need grows every day. So please consider becoming a monthly supporter and invite your friends to do the same. You can learn more about BRAF’s work at blueridgeabortionfund.org and you can donate directly on their website. https://blueridgeabortionfund.org/donate/

New episode alert! Episode 14. Money Mindset Minisode

In today’s episode, we zoom out to talk philosophically about money and how it makes us feel. We talk about two articles from the Atlantic, called “What you’re really worried about when you’re worried about money,” and another article “who actually feels satisfied about money?” In these articles we explore peoples’ relative perception of wealth, the correlation between money and happiness, and what we can do to ease our money related anxieties.

New episode alert! This week, we talk to Max who is a full time professional gig musician. He plays upright bass with different groups and at different venues across New Orleans. As he explains, he and his peers are holdouts, operating as part of a cash-based industry in an increasingly cashless economy. He’s also self-employed, earning uncertain income that fluctuates according to erratic impacts to demand, such as covid.

We talk to him about how he secures gigs, navigates a unique compensation structure, and how he approaches things like healthcare and taxes. Check it out and let us know what you think in the comments below!

🚨New Episode!🚨 This week, our mutual friend Lou Lepping joined us on the podcast to discuss her recent first time homebuying experience. 🏡 We talked to her about the process, from wishlist to loan closing, and captured the good the bad and the ugly of searching for a home during this hot stretch.

It's been a sellers market lately, thanks in part to the pandemic creating some unpredictable demand patterns 📈, so we wanted to learn some secrets from someone who has braved the frenzy. If you are a first time home buyer, or get sick pleasure out of tales from the pandemic homebuying experience, this one's for you!

New episode! We had the pleasure of speaking with Walli Miller of Financially Thriving this week, a financial coach who guides women towards financial wellness and freedom.

Beyond budgeting, Walli helps women conquer their insecurities, guiding them through the intimidating task of wealth building with compassion and dignity.

In this episode, we talk about the difference between living within your means and building wealth, how to build generational wealth and mitigate the allure of materialism in younger generations, the importance of financial independence for women, and how knowledge is power for communities like hers that have had restricted access to political influence and wealth-building opportunities.

New episode! This week we are covering the stock market with an introductory primer tailored to the uninitiated and intrigued.

Investing in the stock market can feel opaque and overwhelming, but it’s something anyone can learn and everyone should aim to understand when planning their long term finances.

We’re no Gordon Gekko or Wolf of Wall Street, but you don’t have to be in order to enjoy the benefits of managing your money. Over the past few months, we have both sought to gain knowledge and confidence in investing, and we’re sharing what we’ve learned so far.

Hi! We're Hannah and Susanna!

For those who don’t know us from our shared context, we met in Wise County Virginia where both of us worked for the Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards, fighting to save Ison Rock ridge and end mountaintop removal mining. A lifetime friendship was forged during this time, and despite many years spent apart, we’ve stayed close.

For years we’ve wanted to work together again, and we have a decade’s worth of scrapped ideas to show for it, such as a staffing firm, a dance exercise Youtube channel, and a sock company that primarily sells singles.

Unfortunately, we are not writing to share how you can finally buy single socks. Instead, we’re excited to announce that we’re launching a podcast! Ways to Means is a personal finance podcast, and an excuse to ask our guests the kind of questions you’d feel awkward to pose at dinner parties. We believe financial empowerment is a collective effort and we learn best by sharing personal experiences with each other. Some of our episodes will feature guest interviews, some will be more oriented towards research and news on a given topic, and some will be diaristic in nature. We will be covering topics such as mid-career sabbaticals, finding financial independence, navigating health care costs associated with childbirth, and so much more.

Our first two episodes are out now, with new episodes dropping every other week on Wednesdays. You can find us on our Spotify page or at www.anchor.fm/waystomeans. Other platforms to follow.

We hope you all will become some of our early listeners and enjoy this as much as we have. Thanks for all your support.
