In New Spain of the latter 1600's, the Utes had the ability to capture and maintain horses. Their horses allowed for movement and hunting over much greater distances.
Around the same time, other Numic speaking people historically known as Comanches soon moved onto the landscape of the Great Plains.
The Comanches (Nummuhnuh) and their Ute kinfolk quickly began a strong relationship as fellow tribesmen. The Spanish authorities noted the ever-growing power of the Utes and their Comanche allies. It was also noticed that the raiders from the North had extreme confidence in their abilities to raid communities. The Comanches and the Utes battled for control of the land and soon expanded their territory.
In the early 1700's, the brethren tribes fought for excellent raiding and trading sites along the Rio Grande River. As both the Apache and Navajo were driven out, they sought help and protection from the Spanish. Over time, the Comanches had come to control the rich grasslands of the Southern Plains and the powerful Utes towered over northwestern New Mexico.
In the 1740's, traders in Navajo country observed that Navajos had to "live on the top of the mesas in little houses of stone. And that the reason for their living in those mountains is because the Yutas and Comanches make war upon them."

Northern Cheyenne warrior Bobtail Horse, circa 1906. Bobtail Horse was among the first Cheyenne to cross the Little Bighorn River to charge Custer’s E troop at the 1876 battle in Eastern Montana. Thirty years later, he held a rock-steady gaze into Richard Throssel’s camera. Bobtail Horse had painted portions of his face, including circumferential bands most visible on the forehead and designs below the eyes. His woven hair was wrapped in heavy wool strips; his earrings were made from shell. His eyebrows and eyelashes were plucked, a practice that was becoming less common. PC users can click the photo to better see details, including the beadwork on his shirt.
In 1879, 27 years prior to the Throssel portrait, L.A. Huffman took the first known photo of Bobtail Horse. The photo can be seen in the first comment on my page. Bobtail Horse was then scouting for Col. Nelson A. Miles, commander of Fort Keogh.

Why Isn’t This Map in the History Books?
By the age of 10, most children in the United States have been taught all 50 states that make up the country. But centuries ago, the land that is now the United States was a very different place. Over 20 million Native Americans dispersed across over 1,000 distinct tribes, bands, and ethnic groups populated the territory.
History is not there for you to like or dislike. It is there for you to learn from it. And if it offends you, even better. Because then you are less likely to repeat it. It’s not yours for you to erase or destroy.

Time is running out for me too,
And life has left scars on my face.
Though my body is growing old,
My soul will always stay young.
The day will come,
When I too will cross the bridge,
And leave this earthly life behind.
But as long as you remember me, I'll live in your heart.
My soul will stay with you,
You will see my face in the rising sun.
My eyes in the stars,
That look down on you every night !

JOYCE MARIE HOPTOWIT: Walla Walla and Yakama, People Of Many Waters. c. 1957.
“For centuries before the coming of European settlers, the Walla Wallas, consisting of three principal bands, occupied the territory along the Walla Walla River and along the confluence of the Snake and Columbia River rivers in a territory that is now part of northern Oregon and southeastern Washington state.
Walla Walla is Nez Perce for "Place of Many Waters", because the original settlement was at the junction of the Snake and Columbia rivers. Tourists to Walla Walla are often told that it is a "town so nice they named it twice".
After ratification, the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla people were prevented from continuing their traditional lifeways and were systematically relocated, sometimes by force, to the reservation.”

Moses J. Brings Plenty (4 September 1969) is an Oglala Lakota television, film, and stage actor, as well as a traditional drummer and singer. He is best known for his portrayal as "Mo" in the Paramount Network series Yellowstone.

Early life and family
Moses Brings Plenty was born on the Pine Ridge Reservation, in South Dakota. He is a direct descendant of Brings Plenty, an Oglala Lakota warrior who fought in the Battle of Little Big Horn. His wife is Sara Ann Haney-Brings Plenty.

His nephew Cole Brings Plenty portrayed Pete Plenty Clouds in two episodes of 1923. Cole was found dead on April 5, 2024, at the age of 27, after having been reported missing days prior.

Acting career
As an actor, he has played bit parts in Hidalgo, Thunderheart, and Pirates of the Caribbean. He also played Quanah Parker in the History Channel documentary Comanche Warrior, which was filmed on the Wild Horse Sanctuary in the southern Black Hills, and Crazy Horse on The History Channel's Investigating History documentary "Who Killed Crazy Horse" and the BBC documentary series The Wild West. He acted in Rez Bomb, considered to be the first movie with a universal storyline set on a reservation. Rez Bomb has been part of the international film festival circuit instead of playing strictly to Native American film festivals, which is a major breakthrough for Native cinema.

In addition to doing theater work in Nebraska, he also portrayed an Apache warrior in the 2011 science fiction western film Cowboys & Aliens[7] and a character named Shep Wauneka in Jurassic World Dominion in 2022.

Brings Plenty is concerned about providing accurate representations of Native peoples in mass media. He says, "Young people told me they don’t see our people on TV. Then it hit me, they are right. Where are our indigenous people, people who are proud of who they are?"[1] Brings Plenty also works behind the scenes on Yellowstone and its spin-off prequels 1883 and 1923 as Taylor Sheridan's American Indian Affairs Coordinator to make sure that each show appropriately represents Native culture.

Music, dance, and modeling career
Brings Plenty has modeled for Ed Hardy and John Yaeger.

Brings Plenty played drums for the band Brulé, who combines traditional Native American drums and flute with contemporary musical instruments.

He performs with and drums for the Many Moccasins Dance Troupe, based in Winnebago, Nebraska that combines modern Native American dance with powwow dances.

He has performed for charity events such as Project Lighthouse, who provides warm clothing and bedding to northern Indian reservations.

Moses has appeared in several episodes of 2018's Yellowstone series, as well as 2023's Lawmen: Bass Reeves, on Paramount Network.

Television
Moses Brings Plenty was one of the experts who tested and displayed the weapons and tactics used by Oglala Lakota war leader Crazy Horse in an episode of the third season of Spike TV's Deadliest Warrior. He appeared in the sixth episode of the fourth season of AMC's Hell on Wheels. He also appeared in all seven episodes of the 2020 historical drama miniseries, The Good Lord Bird.

Brings Plenty plays Mo in the Paramount series Yellowstone. His role has grown through each season, finally becoming a series regular in season five. He is also the show's Native affairs coordinator, working with tribes to ensure that the Native languages and cultures are represented correctly.

He is the son of Coni (Lemke), a photographer, and Joseph Momoa, a painter. His father is of Native Hawaiian and Samoan descent; and his mother, who is from Iowa, is of German, Irish, and Native American ancestry. His interest in biology led him to take classes at a community college in Des Moines, Iowa, before moving to Fort Collins, Colorado, where he waited tables. He later moved to back to Hawaii to reconnect with his father and enrolled in the University of Hawaii’s marine biology program. Japanese-born American international fashion designer Takeo Kobayashi discovered Momoa, then aged 19, and encouraged him to pursue a modeling career. Momoa left the university and worked briefly in that industry before landing his first acting role, as a young lifeguard in the television series Baywatch: Hawaii.
Momoa was cast in his first leading role in a major motion picture in 2010, as the title character in Conan the Barbarian (2011). However, it was his turn as Khal Drogo, the fierce leader of the Dothraki people, during the first two seasons of HBO’s blockbuster television series Game of Thrones (2011–19) that captured the attention of Hollywood directors. In 2014 American director Zack Snyder cast Momoa in the role of Aquaman (a half-human, half-Atlantean being who possesses the powers to manipulate water and communicate with marine animals). Although the film Aquaman was not released until 2018, Momoa appeared in the role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017), two other other Snyder-directed films based on the DC Comics franchise. He was later cast as the legendary swordsman Duncan Idaho in Canadian film director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel Dune (2021). During the same period, Momoa continued to act in television series: he played the ex-convict Phillip Kopus in The Red Road (2014–15), the fur-trading outlaw Declan Harp in Frontier (2016–18), and Baba Voss, the chief of the Alkenny, in See (2019– ).

14/06/2024

The Cherokee are one of the largest and most well-known Native American tribes in history. As a people, they’ve accomplished great things, been a formidable foe and even better ally, and have become one of the strongest voices in the Native American community.

Today, there are more than 300,000 tribal members, making it the largest tribe in the entire United States.

But who exactly are the Cherokee, and what impact have they left in the history books? Keep reading for a brief summary of the fierce and fascinating Cherokee tribe.

CHEROKEE NATION HISTORY AND CONFLICT WITH THE WHITE MAN
According to the Cherokee tradition, the Cherokee people have existed “since time immemorial.” The Cherokee tribe was originally located in the southeastern part of the continent, in what’s now Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas.

They first made contact with Europeans in 1540 during the explorations by Hernando DeSoto, beginning a long and complicated history with the white man. The Cherokee Nation became one of the largest and most powerful associations of tribes in the country and was a formidable force when it took up arms.

Like with many other tribal nations, conflict with settlers and the U.S. Army became frequent as the European settlers pushed farther and farther west. The inevitable expansion of “Manifest Destiny” and the rapidly growing settler population created territorial disputes and led to fierce hostilities between the Cherokee and the white man.

Once gold was discovered in the land occupied by the Cherokee, European settlers flocked by the thousands and the Cherokee got pushed again. In 1835, Cherokee leaders signed the Treaty of New Echota, agreeing to relocate the Cherokee Nation west to what’s now Oklahoma and Arkansas. Those who did not comply were forcibly removed during what became known as the Trail of Tears.

Even with all this conflict, the military might of the Cherokee Indians made them a powerful ally in times of war. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, both the Union and Confederacy sought partnerships with the Cherokee Nation. While most fought with the North, the Cherokee Nation was split and played a major role for both sides during the course of the war.

WHAT WAS THE TRAIL OF TEARS?
Like most other Native American tribes, the Cherokee experienced a long and oftentimes harrowing history of land loss and removal by the U.S. government.

Perhaps worst of all, however, was the Trail of Tears.

With settlers expanding further westward and Southern plantation owners wanting to grow cotton on the Cherokee land, the U.S. government forced the Cherokee and many other tribes to leave their homes and walk hundreds of miles to a new territory across the Mississippi River.

As many as 100,000 Indians began the journey, but up to 25% of them died along the way. Designed by President Andrew Jackson and enforced by the U.S. Army, this journey became known as The Trail of Tears.

“Whooping cough, typhus, dysentery, cholera and starvation were epidemic along the way,” and Suzan Shown Harjo of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian has described it as a genocide.

THE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE OF THE CHEROKEE TRIBE
The Cherokee culture, which celebrates language, spirituality, food, storytelling, and art, has been passed down from generation to generation. According to the Smithsonian, Cherokee culture is based on “seeking balance in the world and embracing harmony. Being in balance means being responsible for one's actions and remembering the good of the whole—the family, the tribe, and the earth.”

To maintain that balance, the Cherokee people look to the guidance of the spirits in the Upper World, which is why the Cherokee Indian culture and spirituality are deeply intertwined. They believe that they could preserve harmony on Earth by participating in daily prayers, rituals, and seasonal ceremonies.

The Cherokee language is a southern dialect of the Iroquois language. The Cherokee Indian language is unique, however, and hard to learn and even harder to translate, which has led to many misunderstandings over the years. Today, less than 10% of Cherokee tribal members still speak the language.

Many theories, though all unproven, abound about the origin of the name "Cherokee,” but the leading belief is that their name is derived from a Creek word meaning “people of different speech.” The Cherokee referred to themselves as Aniyvwiyaʔi, which translates as “Principal People.”

CHEROKEE INDIAN FOOD AND DIET
Like most other Native Americans, the diet of the Cherokee tribe commonly consisted of foods that were either gathered, grown, or hunted. The Cherokee relied heavily on what they referred to as “The Three Sisters:” corn, beans, and squash. As a strong farming culture, the Cherokee grew these in abundance as well as

Sketch of a Native American farmingcollecting wild greens, mushrooms, ramps, nuts, and berries.
The Cherokee were also avid hunters, bringing in deer, bears, birds, fish, squirrels, groundhogs, and rabbits.

As the Cherokee people assimilated more and more with European settlers, they began to learn new methods of farming and agriculture. Learning how to use a rifle became part of their hunting tradition, and they began to include new foods into their diets.

The Cherokee used stone tools to cook and prepare their meals, including knives, axes, chisels, and pans. Their dwellings typically included an open fire below a smoke hole in the roof, over which the women and children would cook their meals. The family bonds were strong within the Cherokee Nation and preparing meals together was a pivotal part of family life.

TRIBES UNITED: FORMING THE CHEROKEE NATION
The Cherokee Nation's FlagIn the early 20th century, Cherokee who relocated to Oklahoma formed the Cherokee Nation. However, for half a century, the tribal government and organizational structure struggled to function and maintain itself. Great progress was made in the ‘70s, during which the Cherokee leadership made major strides and ratified a constitution in 1976. Because of that, they became formally recognized by the US government.

Today, the Cherokee Nation is working hard to provide services to its members, including building health clinics, undertaking major infrastructure projects, creating schools, and funding programs that help underprivileged tribe members. While the Cherokee Nation is the largest Cherokee tribe today, there are two other major tribes: Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians.

THE CHEROKEE PEOPLE TODAY
Today, the Cherokee tribes are still largely concentrated in Oklahoma, with smaller pockets in North Carolina and the west coast, where some migrated during the Great Depression. To support themselves, many Cherokee live in large farming communities. Others live by military bases and other Cherokee Indian reservations.

It is so easy to judge and dismiss that which you do not understand. Most of the world believes that indigenous ceremony is superstition and something that has no grounding in science. To the Indigenous people of North America however, this is the truth of their reality. They believe it in every cell of their bodies. Mankind has moved away from the heart of the world to the logic of the mind, and their belief is in the chemist, the physicist, and the mathematician. Science has proven to them that all this ancient belief in ceremony is simply ignorance... And yet modern man has created, with its great science, which it is certain is the ultimate “truth”, a world on the brink of total destruction in less than two hundred years. Whereas ancient man, with its ceremonies, managed to sustain itself for millions of years. Perhaps we should consider this ancient wisdom, at least to understand, even with our logical mind, how it is possible that ceremony actually can create a world in balance. The only shadow cast here, is that of your own doubt.

Ute woman, Colorado, circa 1896.
This photo of a Ute woman, identified on the photo as Pee-a-rat, and her baby in a cradleboard, was part of a series of Ute images taken by the Denver photography studio of Rose & Hopkins in about 1899.
John K. Rose (1849-1932), Benjamin Hopkins (1859-1915), and Lee Morehouse (1850-1926) of Rose & Hopkins, were photographers based in Denver who took photos of Native American Indians wearing traditional dress, including members of the Ute, Arapaho, Shoshone, Pueblo, and Apache tribes throughout Colorado and Wyoming. Portraits include Southern Ute Chief Sapiah (also known as Buckskin Charley), Sapiah’s wife Towee, Weeminuche Ute Chief Ignacio, and Apache Chief James A. Garfield, and many others. Many of their studio portraits were taken at the Denver Festival of Mountain and Plain circa 1896-1899.
Although many of the sitters in the photos are identified, and some are well-known, for many, such as Pee-a-rat, we know nothing beyond their names.
One of our readers, Carole Graham, exercised a little lateral thinking, and might have come up with a bit more about Pee-a-rat and her child: "There's a Ute woman whose name is extremely close, A-cop-e-a-rat, (age 27) living on the Southern Ute Reservation, according to the 1902 Indian Census Rolls. She's been given the name "Anna Lyon Parker" and has a 1 year old baby daughter, Pu-o. Good chance this is the woman in the photo, especially if it was actually taken ca. 1901-1902.
